Title: Rear Suspension Creaking When Full
Post by: jfdelacruz on August 09, 2013, 06:05:35
Hi All,

Tried searching around with not quite good results.

I've noticed a creaking noise coming from the rear suspension when the car is full (5 adult passengers) from day 1, but it's started to get noisier (after 23 months of ownership and 16.7tKM of driving). It only creaks whenever there's at least 100KG of load on the rear (two 50KG passengers). It creaks when going over humps or bumps where the suspension has to compress/decompress. Otherwise it's mostly silent.

I have it serviced every 5000KM and aligned every after service (at one of the better Bridgestone shops with a Hunter DSP machine) and no one has noticed anything wrong with the suspension.

Any ideas what it may be?

I have noticed this with one of ours, but the other one(the later model one)it is not a problem with this one,I have noticed on inspection days when I pull all the wheels off in the rear suspension, where the springs seat in their locating cups, the pad in both the bottom and the top are extremely thin almost plastic looking pads, unlike other cars I have had which have heavy thick rubber seating pads,I'm not sure whether this could be partly to blame,I've not found anyone who can mould me a set of seating cups in thicker rubber yet to test my theory,as this is all it is at this point, but like all annoying noises like that, it is always good to find the issue so maybe we can fix it

I think you're on the money Rick. IIRC, that has been mentioned here somewhere.

Definitely not that, as the camber can't be adjusted on the i30....

From the other thread Phil links to:

Loose right rear camber adjuster bolt.

At 5 years old and 40k miles I'm considering a full, front and rear suspension Re-bush. I got a couple of squeaks beginning under load too....

My car sometimes squeaks from the rear suspension when I get out of the car, 5000 km ago I gave the bushings in left rear side some spraygrease, and it haven't returned (yet)

(NO, it's not because I'm too fat, I'm only 84 kg's)...  :snigger:

My car have now done 189000 km. :goodjob2:

I wasn't the author of the referred statement, so maybe the description is incorrect, however the meaning was to check under there for a loose adjuster bolt. This complainant states that the alignment is regularly adjusted.

I'll give these a quick look over on the next weekend (away on vacation now). Im not sure what i'm going to be looking for but i'll have a can of lithium grease just in case some bolts need greasing. Also gonna try wiggling that plastic suspension cover and see what it does.

The silicon spray will penetrate better as a diagnostic tool. If it goes away you can think about dismantling and greasing bolts.

This is interesting to me,I am going to have to do some more investigating,so the blokes doing my wheel alignments are pulling my leg then,as I have always been charged for a four wheel alignment,I'll have to find out what they are actually alligning in the arse end

There is a rear adjustment Rick.
Toe is adjustable and it's those bolts which I think are being incorrectly referred to as "camber adjusters". In fact, at a glance you'd think that's what they are until you've got the heads hooked up and tak ethe readings and start adjusting.
In fact, don't quote me, but I seem to recall they do adjust a certain amount of camber, despite what others have said.
As I say, I'd need to have a look at one up on the hoist again. When you see the suspension pivot points from underneath it's easy to see what will alter when you move those offset bolts.

Keith, I know how you feel. :)
I'm not sure how many kms I've travelled but I do know I'm 55 years old and I too am considering a full front and rear re-bush as I have a few squeaks under load as well.

The link referred to was about an i40, so I guess they do have camber adjustment
