Title: Clutch trouble as well
Post by: raf-1200 on December 06, 2013, 12:33:26: My partners car is a 2008 petrol i30. Started making a grinding noise at slow speed. Was hoping it was wheel bearings. Under further scrutiny it seems to be clutch related though.

While stationary and with clutch in engine is normal. When clutch is let out (even in neutral) she starts making some horrible noises as well as what feels like 'grabbing' making the engine idle go down every few seconds... Thoughts?

I'm thinking thrust bearing but I've been wrong before. In fact I was wrong an hour ago when I thought it was wheel bearings lol

Post by: eye30 on December 06, 2013, 15:44:29: To test clutch drive along the road in say 4th at a steady say 35 mph or equv kph.

Them floor the accelerator.

If the engine starts to race with no/hardly any increase in speed then clutch is slipping and new one required.

You could also try this at the stop position.

Engine running and handbrake hard on.
Put car into 2nd.
Rev the engine a bit but not to much,
Let he clutch up slow and if the clutch is ok the front of the car will rise and if it wants to pull you forward.
If the clutch is slipping the upward motion will not occur.

Since this happened I spoke to my partner who told me that in fact she had trouble keeping it in reverse a couple of times lol. That information would have been good to know before I went on a 400 km round trip lol.

So I suspect Keith is correct and it's the thrust bearing or even the input shaft bearing. Might as well put in a new clutch anyway.

We have some bike enthusiasts here, I have owned a Honda ST70 :lol: XL350 and a BMW R65, but many years ago now.
