Title: Alternator question?
Post by: asathorny on December 29, 2013, 14:07:31
MY2010 Petrol Edition.  The alternator is playing up, it cost me a new battery to find this out (I was in a rush, silly I know).

Will it be covered under warranty or should I be looking for a recon replacement ????

Thanks in advance

Asa

Sorry to hear of your problem

In my waranty book the alternator is not specifically mentioned.
The nearest is - bushes- 60 months.

So you could go and argue there is no juice produced due to the bushes having worn out prematurely.

Need to sort out asap otherwise the new battery will be flat very quickly especially using lights, heater etc

Just thought

Have you tested the alternator, checked wires especially any earthing and give it a spray of wd40 into it

I don't see why the alternator shouldn't be covered by the warranty.

The dealer can easy check if it is working ok. I wouldn't spray WD40 or anything else into the alternator

Alternators are nasty devices, they can discharge batteries slowly. It's not the bushes but most likely a diode has packed up, there are 3 inside. When this happens, there is normally a very faint glow from the alternator / battery light in the dash which you will NOT see in daylight. So you are unaware that your battery is slowly discharging. Unfortunately this is where a proper gauge should be fitted, you would notice the few amps on the - side of the gauge..

WD40 won't fix it and it is just a case of warranty IMO.

Be forceful ASA if they say not covered (I reckon it should be...)

If all else fails, threaten to sit on them.. that should work!

Sorry, I'm in a funny mood today!  :-[

I wouldn't have any qualms spraying WD40 in there - it's only a water-dispersant after all :)

Anything more than a handful is wasted in my opinion, Maria could scream for me anyday, just a moment whilst I reflect on that thought <sigh>  MMMMmmmmm   nice :goodjob: :goodjob:

Anyhow lads, back to reality, she in the shop now, no no not Maria, the car, it's at the dealership now they'll ring me in one to two hours.  He wouldn't commit as to whether it would be dealt with as a warranty issue.
I am now sat here with crossed fingers waiting

My shiny red one is back in it's little house at the side of my hut...

They said they can't find a thing wrong with it!!!!!

I drive home and the BATTERY light didn't come on at all, having said that the dealerships garage isn't far away, I could p**s further if I tried hard.

So, I have work on Friday, fingers crossed it doesn't bugger me about on a work day  :scared: :scared: :scared: :scared:

So do you still have the flat battery?

If so charge up and put in boot just in case.

I do Lester, but, I have now been out to the shops this morning and voila, everything is hunky dory no light in the binical except the one which are supposed to be there..

However your point is well made, if it happens again, what then.

I inquired with my breakdown service and they want £91 to put me on HOME START

I went shopping on AMAZON and an engine starter is on the way as we speak 'Streetwize SWPP1 Portable Power Pack with Air Compressor', which well do the same job as my recovery bloke would do i.e. jump start the car.  Oh and please, please, no shroud waving.  The RAC would do exactly the same thing .  It's cost me £79 for a new battery and £55'ish for the engine starter making a grand total of (hang on whilst I get me smart phone out) £134 <phew> thank God for smartphones

My alternator was replaced under warranty. The story is told in the 'Diesel Problems and Issues' section under 'Alternator making a whining noise'. The car was over 3 years old, had covered more than 100,000 miles, been serviced at stretched intervals and had never been back to a main dealer.

Yeah, thanks Marti.   I think it's all sorted now.   Not sure what part of this rock you live on but then again I guess it'd be similar where ever.  If it plays up again I ca say that someone else got a replacement   :goodjob: :goodjob: :goodjob: :goodjob:

If in recovery subscription then over 1/4 or 1/2 mile from home they attend as part of breakdown.

If you call again for same fault if they have said needs sorting/replacing i.e. flat battery they can make a charge.

At home. Do you live at the top of a hill?
Then let it roll down and make sure just past minimum distance...

Sadly not Lester, and I don't know when, if ever I will.  The patients from there have all been moved to other facilities.  That's all I know thus far.  It all happened rather suddenly.   I am hoping that it's nothing more than a change  of registration, we'll have to wait and see <sigh>

Cuppa and choccie biccies not a problem, if and when  :goodjob: :goodjob: :goodjob:

Yeah the car as run without a hitch since the new battery was fitted.  I guess the cold weather found the batteries weakness <sigh>  I have the engine starter now, so if needed in the future I can get the thing started without begging for help  :victory: :victory: :victory:

So long as you keep it in the boot but then remember you put it in the garage for safe keeping!
