Title: Whats the best tires to put on my i30 ?
Post by: Mal on January 09, 2014, 02:18:04
Hi folks,

My i30 has done 75 k on the original Kumho's (195/65 x 15) and now its in need of some new rubber.
As always, the tire dealers  have come up with various personal thoughts about the best replacements ?
I'm interested in longevity and would say the Kumho's are good but a little noisy.
Ive been told a Pirelli or Continental would be miles better ? I really don't know other than they are respected tire manufacturers.
Any new thoughts would be appreciated ?   :)

Hi Mal, the Continentals are a good tyre as far as grip and quietness are concerned but I can't comment on their longevity as, so far, mine only have 15,000 - 16,000 k on them...  :undecided:

Haven't heard a bad word about Continental tyres, here. They will go on our car when she needs shoes next. That was very good longevity from the Khumo's.  :goodjob2: You must be a smooth driver.

Whatever you buy, the "buy 3 get one free" offers that come up every now and then seem to be good value.  Watch for such special offers from the tyre chains, but be aware of normal tyre prices so that you can see any added value in the offers.

What about Goodyear Excellence?  Surferdude says that they are "pretty top of the range" tyres but I have no idea what they cost.

And the eco, fuel saving tyres?

The Goodyear Excellence is an asymetric tyre and from what I remember, was actually developed in conjunction with a number of vehicle manufacturers to meet their ride quality standards.
I wasn't aware until the other day that they are among the OE tyres fitted to Toyota's Corolla. Not sure what their cost is but they would be comparable with the Conti.
I also can't comment on mileage because every driver/ car combination is different.
But given the last few days with my wife's 18 month old Corolla, I'll certainly add them to my options when my i30 is due again, although that is still some time off.

Tires seem to be one of the most difficult things to choose. If you choose wrong its an expensive mistake !  :undecided: Mal

One of the things that put me off the Contis was a number of reviews stating tire wear was higher than expected.

I was going to give them a go based on the buy 3 get one free offer, but Ebay made me an offer on a set of original rims and tyres I couldn't refuse.....perhaps next time!

Personally if I got 75k from the originals, and I wasn't bothered by a bit of noise I would be going with the known quantity!

Very true.
My advice is, if you don't already have one, try to develop a relationship (in a business sense of course), with a tyre dealer near you. As someone else said, the "Buy 3, get one free" offers are a good starting point. Most reputable chains have them at least once a year these days. And in general, they must be genuine or the Trades Practices Commission comes down on them pretty hard.
For instance, if they don't normally show separate extra charges for balancing etc, and just add them on during the advertising period, that's fraudulent.
Also, many of the chains offer "After Sales Service" in which they'll rotate, inspect and balance your tyres every 10,000 klms for free. You only pay for the wheel alignment.
You just have to decide if you want to be that careful with your tyres.

And a little secret.
K-Mart Tyre and Auto will generally match any other company's offers. Genuinely.

From my experience they stuff anything complicated, so get a wheel alignment elsewhere  :whistler:

Yeah. Only talking about getting the best price in your negotiating.
I guess, given my comment about developing a relationship, beerman's right.

But back to topic. I tested the serial tyres, hancook eco.. This is crap^^

Toyo Proxes 4 are too. On dry weather a bit as a rubber, but on wet weather slippery like soap.

The GD does not have LED tail lights in Australia.  If you want them, you get tem from South Korea.

Also, you can replace filament globes (normal globes) with LED bayonet globes.  They don't look as good.

Oh, and  :welcum: to the forum.  Your English is good.   :cool!: rims on your car.

Hi folks,

many thanks for all the replies and the 'show car' input !

Back to original plot though. I rang around and ended up going with the 'Kumho' again.
My local Bob Jane T-Mart (Rob who came across as a very experienced bloke) offered me some very competitive prices with some logical advice. That coupled with a few comments I read here i.e why change brand when they've done so well?
Ive ordered a set of KH18's at $109 a corner. Apparently low noise and as good a quality.
I noted they are from a new Chinese plant which I was a little concerned about after reading the brochure when I got home!
It seems everything is going that way doesn't it and we cant change it.
They will be fitted early next week. I will keep you posted as to how they go.
ps - They also offered me a copy of the KH15 made specifically for Bob Jane by Khumo. The price was excellent and I was tempted but I still preferred the 'right name' on the side wall.

Many thanks for all the input -
Happy motoring.

PPS - Ive just had it serviced and was quoted $114 to replace the 'pollen filter'. (John Hughes)
I declined as I didn't know it even had one. Searching around the net its apparently a 10 minute job to replace once the filters sourced. Does anyone know where I could get the right price on one of those in Perth Western Australia ?

Many thanks one and all !

Why not go Ebay? Plenty on there including this one...

HYUNDAI - i30 - TURBO DIESEL - 1.6L | 01/07-02/08 - Sydney Filters (http://www.sydneyfilters.com.au/2007-02-08/)

I replaced the cabin/polen filter/s in my CRDi recently, for the first time.  Stupidly, I paid $65 from Hyundai; they are very basic things.  There are two filters that sit side-by-side behind the glove box.  The two filters came in the one box from Hyundai.

I have not used Sydney Filter Services but next time I might.  $35 is a lot better than $65.

(I just looked at Dazzler's link and it looks like that vendor might be the same as the one in my link.)

Hi folks,

many thanks for all the feed back. I'm having the new tires fitted tonight and I will get a 'pollen' filter over the net after I pull out the glove box and have a look.
Great to get the all feedback from you.
Re the life of the present tires. In WA we have a variety of road conditions like anywhere else.
I try to make my tires last as long as I can in this way  -
1/ Keep the pressures up i.e 40psi ( yes you feel the bumps a bit more but they run cooler and last longer !)
2/ Drive like you have a box of eggs on your lap i.e slow down a bit on the corners and don't drive out of them too hard. I used to own sports cars. The i30 goes very well but I drive it accordingly.
3/ Monitor the wear patterns and rotate them every 10 K. If they're not even see why-  may need a wheel alignment ? Have you hit any pot holes lately ?
4/ Slow down on the rough tracks etc.
I hate spending money on cars these days so I do things to avoid it if I can !

Have a great day/week/month etc - catch you all next time & good motoring  :)
