How many different 1.6 CRDi engines have there been? Have they all had cast iron blocks? Do they have particular code names? (I see references to codes such as U2 here and there in the discussions.)
Looking at brochures from 2007 and 2013, I see that they are the same capacity, 1582cc, same bore and stroke (77.2 mm x 84.5 mm) but the 2007 has 85 kW and 255 Nm; 2013 has 94 kW and 260 Nm.

Eureka Diesels can have the same block,bore and stroke sizes and have a variance of Kw or horsepower,simple as changing the computer settings,other times it is a matter of changing injectors,pump size and output.
just as an example the truck I drive has an engine,mine is set as a 435Hp but just by changing a few settings it can be uprated to either 455Hp or 485Hp,without changing any motor parts

Same engine with a few tweaks. Only U and U2 as far as I am aware.

The FD with the U engine came with a 1,6 L 90 HP/230 Nm or 115 HP/255 Nm
The FD with the U2 engine came with a 1,6 L 90 HP/240 Nm or 115 HP/260 NM or 128 HP/260 Nm
The GD with the U2 engine comes with a 1,6 L 110 HP/260 Nm or 128HP/260 Nm
The GD also comes with a 1,4 CRDI 90 HP/220 Nm but I don't know if it's just a "downgraded" U2 engine.
One of the differences between the U 90 HP and 115 HP is the turbo. 90 HP have normal turbo, the 115 HP have VGT turbo.

my 2008 5 speed CRDi motor looked same as my 2011 u2 CRDi 6 speed just plastic cover on motor different exhaust manifold slightly different & turbo mounted slightly higher, the part numbers on the injectors different the u2 has a better torque delivery & smoother in all gears but apart from that it's the same.
dealer who serviced it last time ( not selling dealer ) said it has same motor & gear box as the new GD.
they are not perfect but i love it.goes good enough for me.

We don't get it in the i30, infact not aware of ever getting it in any Hyundai :undecided:

Thanks ... but where do the U and U2 designations come from?
On the left B pillar of my car, there's a sticker that notes TRANSM as J and AXLE as G (and the PAINT and TRIM codes). The Engine???

The 11th character in the VIN on my car is a U (and the 12th is not a 2). I will have a look at a few other i30s and see what their VINs show.

if you have driven the first 1,6 CRDi 5speed manual for a few years then change over to the newer 1.6 CRDi 6 speed manual you will notice a difference. the very last FD got the u2 & 6 speed same diesel motor gear box as the GD, but think GD petrol motor & Auto changed from FD to GD. diff ratio's might have changed too.

For sure they have played with the gear ratios.
MY 2012 i30 GD was much higher geared than my previous 2010 FD. But my present 2013 i30 Tourer has reverted to the original gearing.

Difficult to say because my last two cars have been blue drive. Also the present car is a tourer.
My 2010 FD 1.6 CRDi manual hatch averaged 49.01 mpg over 13,800 miles = (5.76 l/100km over 22,200 km)
My 2012 GD 1.6 CRdi blue drive 128PS manual hatch averaged 53.68 mpg over 11700 miles = (5.26 l/100km over 18,800 km)
Ny 2013 GD 1.6 CRdi blue drive 128PS manual tourer so far has averaged 52.28 mpg over 6200 miles = (5.40 l/100km over 9,900 km)

Thank Alan, your new tourer looks good, looks like i40 style , i like the look of the i40 myself.
i have never checked my average myself, just look at L/100k on trip pc ( i know it's not perfect. if i leave it without re setting it with mixture town & open road with air conditioning on it shows 5.2 , if i turn it off drive open road goes from 4.7 to 4.9, this is normal driving at posted speed limit. if i drive slow could improve but i don't like holding traffic up. here we have. lot of single lane open road, so driving slow causes traffic build up.

You will note that it is impossible for us guys in Europe with diesels to get the good economy figures you enjoy in Australia.
Firstly - we have a much colder climate - this extends warm-up times and hits fuel consumption.
Second - being a smaller country I guess our average journeys are shorter and traffic congestion probably worse
Third - we have DPF's fitted which impact average consumption quite a bit.
Fourth - we have higher speed limits and tend to exceed them

that's what i had imagined , when i got my first i30 CRDi 5 speed back in July 2008. as at the time was first diesel i had owned myself & a gent we had as a member at the time was claiming the cold weather was killing his economy down snowy mountains, he covered his intercooler & claimed he got increased economy. so like a sheep :rofl: , i went and did the same. then he claimed we would see increased economy when summer came. but i really have not noticed a big difference summer to winter economy. i know it would be there just it's not a huge difference. but of corse our climate has a very mild winter by euro standards. i think the major killer of economy is Speed & weight ( tow a trailer to find that out ). but what i do notice is you smell the diesel more on first start up in winter, in summer no or not much of a diesel smell on start up. the motor seems to like 22c temps to 26c. seems to perform better at those temps. i think we drive slower here, as speed limit enforced more here or at least that's the impression i get.

I'm not understanding the logic of this economy discussion. Cold air is denser than hot air, that's why/how the intercooler works - chill the air to assist with combustion efficiency and, ultimately economy. Present colder air to the intercooler and its efficency increases (really high performance diesels benefit from water cooled heat exchangers rather than air to air) As for the lower ambient temp affecting actual engine operating temperature, the thermostat will take care of that, so engine temps should be the same. I'm wondering if the fuel quality is different ?

A diesel engine is a heavy lump of metal which soaks up a lot of energy after a cold start until it reaches normal temperature. I have only owned 5 diesels - but all of them have been thirsty whilst the engine is heating up - and more so from a sub zero start. I went out this morning first thing and the car temp gauge showed minus 3 centigrade. I did 11 miles before the engine temperature gauge reached its running temperature during which time the instant fuel economy was in the low forties mpg.

Thanks, Aussie K. That's informative (altho I haven't looked at the pdf one yet). I should see if I can get to drive a U2 CRDi.
(Phil No 1: I am not convinced by your suggestion that the U in the VIN number signifies a CRDi engine. I looked at about 10 FDs and 20 GDs recently and all the FDs had a U as the 11th VIN character, regardless of being CRDI or petrol. All the GDs that have the VIN starting with a K had a U as the 11th character; the GD VINs starting with a T have a J as the 11th character. I think the K at the start might mean Korean production; T meaning Czech production.)
I have to get a life, I know.

You are correct Eureka, disregard my information. The U in my vin denotes the manufacturing plant location in Korea. Sorry for the mis info. :-[

When I was 9 to about 14 years old I was a dedicated train spotter - ticking off in my Ian Allen book the number of each steam train as it puffed by.
This gives me an idea for a new hobby. We could start a VIN collecting project where members note the VIN number and location of every i30 they see parked up, and submit them to Eureka so he could slowly build up a complete record of i30 VIN Nos worldwide.

Alan, we might leave that idea alone ... or else things could get out of control.
But it does seem that with the GDs, the 9th character is M for autos and L for manuals. Mine is the only FD manual VIN I have and the 9th character is R; FD autos have an M.
