Title: 1.4 petrol for long distance rides
Post by: petka on January 16, 2014, 09:14:54
Hi,

I'm thinking of buying i30 1.4 petrol, and I'm going to use it for long distance weekend/vacation trips only (I commute by bicycle in the city).
By long distances I mean 200..600 km per day.
The speed limit on the highways here (in Switzerland) is 120kmh.
Can you share your experience, how comfortable is it to ride i30 1.4 at this speed?
Is it too noisy? Is it too difficult to reach this speed?

Alternative for me is to go for a used car with a more powerful engine.

Thanks for your advice, in advance!

Welcome petka  :drinks:

I have only driven a 1.4 Getz (we have never had the 1.4 ltr motor in an i30 in Australia)

I imagine Switzerland and surrounding countries are quite hilly. For your sort of driving maybe the 1.4 or 1.6 diesel would be worth the extra money? I would think the 1.4 wouldn't be so much noisy as underpowered in hilly country.  :undecided:

Hi Petka,

Can't help you with the 1.4 information you require, but the type of driving you intend to do is perfect for the 1.6 Diesel. They are more expensive, but a good second hand vehicle would be much more enjoyable to drive, very fuel efficient and much more power for hills, IMO.

hi petka,

ive got the 1.4 comfort, and have used it for 3 holidays last year,

its fine at 70 mph on the motorway, probably better at 50 60 on a country road, all in happy with it as city and weekend car,

I have a 1.4 petrol (old model) and although I mainly use it as a town car it does fairly well on motorway trips. The engine revs are quite high at that speed (around 75mph) but not disturbingly noisy. Fuel consumption above 70 drops quite a bit though.

I don''t know if the new model is any better than mine for motorway work but with the distances you are going to drive I'd be thinking of a noisy, clattering diesel. :)

Hi Peter

 :wttc:

If these 200-600 km trip will be your main use for the car I think a diesel will be a better choice, but of course the petrol can get you around.

Thanks for your replies!
I went to see 1.6 diesel today, and actually I didn't like the engine sound, and also it was a bit small for me.
Finally I bought a used Mercedes CLC coupe, which is 35% more expensive than a new i30 1.6, but it should be really comfortable to drive for long distances.

Wow, that's not even near the same as the 1,4 i30...

I'm sure you will drive comfy with that car, congrats.
