Title: Wheel alignment due
Post by: FatBoy on February 05, 2014, 22:30:25
I've recently noticed that my fuel economy has become significantly worse (around 20% more fuel being used for the same trips).  I checked the tyres yesterday and noticed that the front tyres have significantly worse wear than the rear, and that the outside of the front tyres has "feathered" (i.e. looks and feels like a saw blade).  I booked the car in for a wheel alignment, balance and rotation tomorrow.  I'll have to ask them how much it was out by when I pick it up.  At least I'll be able to check whether they have done the rotation or not.

You need to be sitting in the car when they carry out the alignment adjustments to allow for the weight............................

I thought that would be more important for a balance!!

Although we could get both Dave and Rusty in the car together, then it would be balanced.

It appears we have the internal edge wear on our front tyres. :fum: :fum:

Wish we had someone locally that knows how to correct this problem. Don't want to waste new tyres if this is ongoing, thinking about the Conti's next time too.

Phil, if it's on both tyres, I'd reckon it's a toe out issue. But...................MAY be that both front wheels are in negative camber. Be interesting to see what a wheel alingment reading is.

That's definitely "toe in" Jamie. assuming it's both tyres.
If the problem was the one reported by some diesel owners, supposedly relating to the weight of the engine, it's be on the inside, like Phil's.
Make sure you go to a wheel aligner who can do printouts of "before" and "after".
I can't imagine an alignment issue could be costing an extra 20% of fuel, though.

Remember that an extra 20% is .9 l/100km for me.  The tire wear is significant, though.

It's not the amount. The % is significant.
The drag to produce that sort of loss would be so serious, you'd notice it. probably wouldn't roll in neutral at a set of lights on a slight slope.

I was noticing that it wasn't accelerating down hill with my foot off the throttle like it used to.  Hopefully all will be fixed tomorrow.  Thanks Trev.

What side would you be more comfortable on, Rusty?  Left or Right?

Trev,

Are the B. Jane outlets good at wheel alignments, or is there someone else I should use

When you book your car in for a wheel alignment you will need to find out if you have front and rear adjustment as my 2013 i30 does not have any it runs 4.3mm toe out. I have taken it back and they tell me that within manufactures specs ( I dont think so ) be interesting what Hyundai Aust says..

The front was only 2mm out, the back was spot on.  I'll have to keep an eye on the wear again now, and see what happens.

My fronts were 4mm out total toe-out, enough for serious premature inside edge wear, with the rear spot on. I got them to check whether the rear are adjustable just out of interest and they are.

Think it's only for toe adjustment Gonz. Which is fine, unless one camber setting is out of specs.
