Title: Fuel Economy tests on my I30
Post by: Zoom on February 09, 2014, 14:01:48
Been doing some fuel economy tests over the last few months and here are the results:

Unleaded 91 - 9.77L / 100 Km
Unleaded 95 - 8.54L / 100 Km
E10 95 - 8.88L / 100 Km

95 was 10 c/l more expensive than 91.  The E10 was 4 c/l cheaper than.  The E10 was a saving of $9 per tank compared to 91.

Would be interested if anyone else gets similar results for their Gen2 I30.

We are averaging 9.82 with the GD auto six speed and average 8.4 with the FD 4 speed auto. Logic tells me that if I have two extra gears , my fuel economy would be way better............so am I happy with the fuel economy of the GD......NUP!.......

Interesting exercise! E10 bashers say the price saving of E10 is well and truly offset by the worse fuel economy, but I don't notice any difference economy wise between E10 and 91 in my Hybrid!

All this is very strange.

E10 is the lightest fuel in terms of energy content per litre. It's main advantage is that it is somewhat renewable and that there is oxygen produced during combustion which "supposedly" makes it a cleaner burning fuel. Even their brochure states that overall distance will be slightly less than standard fuel.

So, 8.88 l/100 is less fuel consumed than 91, how can this be? Perhaps the 91RON driving contained more stop start city travel.

Based on those figures, I'd rather pay 4c/l less than 91 and get almost 95 distance, any day. :Dunno:

E10 users might like to read what Hyundai say about the stuff....  :undecided:

NRMA had the same results with E10 when they tested a GD to see whether it was worth running premium fuel.  I remember seeing this on ACA about 1 year ago-ish. I have run E10, 95, 91 and never seem to get a difference on my auto GD

Are you driving auto or manual?

I just did 652km and filled up 39.7L topped off twice to make sure it was full as it could get.

That equates to 6.1L per 100km. This is a mix of highway (70%) and city driving (30%), on regular 91 gas.

I think you'll find the e10 is the 95 with e10 rather than the base unleaded with e10 hence why it sits in between in regards to economy.

The car does exactly the same route every week.  Its an Automatic. Each test required 4 refills of each fuel then the average taken. So its a very accurate test in my opinion.

I am continuing the test and will post up more results soon.

Using U91 our long-term average is 8.4l/100km at 60%City and 40%Hwy driving. So far the best fuel economy was 7.0l/100km. I will do a trial using the U95 for a while. Unfortunately our driving varies widely - from 90% city to the occasional longer distance excursion. My thanks to Zoom   :goodjob2:
