Title: Gastroscopy
Post by: TheReaper on March 27, 2014, 09:41:54
Anyone ever been scoped for acid reflux (GORD)? Getting scoped in a week and a bit, and wondering how things went if any of you have gone through it. As a paramedic, I treat people all day, but the role is not usually reversed....  :undecided:

I had one about seven years ago to check out some reflux issues.  I have a mild hiatus hernia, and was treated with drugs only (now only on demand).

Apparently the camera is the same one that they use for the colonoscopy.  It must be, because I woke up with a sh1t taste in my mouth!!

Honestly, I don't remember the actual procedure, and no after effects.

yeah, they give you fentanyl to prevent any pain, and a drug called midazolam, which is a sedative that has amnesic properties in it. Just wondering if anyone had any horror stories, glad yours went well. :goodjob: :goodjob: :goodjob2:

I had an ENT specialist use some sort of camera to look for that but he went in through my nose and down the back of my neck.

Diagnosed GORD (for years I blamed my sinus).
Gave me about 5 or 6 things to do to control it including some drugs to ease the symptoms for a month or so while the other things kicked in.

None of them had ANY effect at all.

It WAS sh1t from my sinuses.

That's wild! I believe mine is reflux, I was getting bad heartburn off and on for a couple years, and then recently a couple times while eating certain foods, I wasn't able to swallow and my oesophagus spasmed and up came everything. My GP put me on nexium. Has seemed to help a good bit since Ive been on it.  :undecided: Have to give up my spicy foods and smoking habit.........

I went in for a colonoscopy to check for cancer last November. While I was there, they did a gastroscopy to check gut as well as for reflux problem. Results were.....bottom end safe, top end , they put me on a reflux daily tablet of Nexium for the rest of my life. As I am a gagger, they knocked me out with a twilight type drug and never felt a thing........ I am now booked in with my boyfriend....ooopps...doctor  ....for another colonoscopy in two years.. :snigger:
Title: Re: Gastroscopy
Post by: TheReaper on March 27, 2014, 11:17:12
Glad everything turned out pretty okay. Be careful being on nexium for the rest of your life. It's a proton pump inhibitor (PPI) which means that it stops your stomach from producing much acid. Which leads to diarrhoea (excuse the grossness). Usually your body compensates for awhile, but nexium is known after while to turn off the acid production completely, which leads to permanent diarrhoea or as I call it wet cheeks power dump.

Have to give up my spicy foods..

Many years ago i had it done as when i had certain foods i had bad guts....

Had half day in hozzie and was put out. Tube down throat.

Nowt found but put me on zantac for 1 week.

Never reoccured but i make sure i do not eat very very very spicy foods

Post by: TheReaper on March 27, 2014, 22:05:17
Yeah mine comes on with anything really spicy, starchy like bread rolls, and bacon. Hopefully it will be something that can be reversed.  Because I am not giving up the bacon!
Title: Re: Gastroscopy
Post by: FatBoy on March 27, 2014, 22:08:39
Mine is set off by bananas.  Apparently that is rare, as for most people with reflux, bananas settles it.  That is a pain, as bananas are my favourite fruit!!

My nexium has gone to "on demand".  I am also trying to lose a bit more weight, as the doctor said that my beer gut puts pressure on my stomach, forcing it up into the thorax, causing the hiatus hernia.

Yeah, I could lose a bit of my beer gut. Hopefully without stopping the beer. Near impossible with the craft beer industry in Newcastle

So I called the GI specialist this morning to figure out where I was suppose to go and what they wanted me to do the day before, since I hadn't heard anything from them. Come to find out im not actually having the procedure on the 10th............. Im just going to have a consult. Ughhhh annoying. Why when my GP says they believe I need it, do I have to go have a talk and then another day to have the procedure. Just a way for the doctors to make twice the money.... :disapp: :disapp: :disapp:

Think I'm putting too much thought into it. Dictor thinks, because of acid reflux I have scarred the lining of my esophagus. Causing esophageal stricture (narrowing). But a small chance, rare, it could  be cancer. Eventhough the doctor says its rare, doesn't help settle your mind.....  :undecided:

Should Chronic acid reflux, or GERD, be discovered it can lead to Barrett’s oesophagus. However, in the UK NICE have approved Photo Dynamic Therapy (PDT) as a possible cure, it's a simple process.
They say that the worst patients are Medics & Doctors  :)

Whilst the colonoscopy sounds unpleasant, it rarely is. It's the prep the day and night before that you have to do (no food, drink this liquid that confines you to the throne room).

Anyway, Reaper should just about be done by now. Hopefully he's OK.

Hey guys, I'm back home. Doctor was only 2 hours late getting to me. Wouldn't let my misses sit with me before or after the procedure. Didn't bother to communicate with her, to let her know why it was taking so long. And then the Dr came and saw me told me what was wrong and that everything else looked good, and that he would see me at the follow up appointment which is on 5/6/14. No advice by any of the staff on what to do until then....... shit service (excuse my language). And pretty irritable at the moment about the lack of care. ... But anyways, I have a hiatal hernia. Going to bed guys, be back all day tomorrow since I can't drive or drink lol. Appreciate all of you for the thoughts and kind words.

Very Disappointing you had crappy care, the couple of times I've been in for scoping, through either end,I have always gotten brilliant care and doctors have always come up and explained issues found and staff have always given us after care instructions, mind you like all doctors appointments,I have never had a doctor that has run on time, think it must be written in their SOP's to make sure they always run late.

Hope all is well Reaper, see you back here tomoz

Good luck, Dave.  I too have a hiatus hernia, diagnosed about 6 years ago.  I sometimes get reflux, but I went from Nexium daily, to on demand.  It has flared up again recently, so I might have to go and see the doctor again.  The biggest factor for me to get it to stop is to lose some weight!!  My beer gut is putting pressure on my stomach, which forces it up through my diaphragm, causing the reflux.

At least it isn't oesophageal cancer.  My former boss was diagnosed with that in May last year, and died six weeks later.   :blubber:

Sorry to hear that :blubber:

I too have some weight I could lose. I'm going to ween myself of the Nexium. It is not good to be on that long term, as well as being expensive. Nexium is a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). Which means that it tells your body to turn off the acid producing cells, which in return makes you produce less acid. Since the drug hasn't been on the market that long, they are starting to see that if people are on it for too long then the pumps never turn back on which can cause symptoms like permanent diarrhoea, since you cant properly digest your food. Or it can have a rebound affect and cause your cells to go haywire and produce even more acid then they did when they were causing problems initially. My problem isn't so much the reflux, but food getting caught after swallowing and then regurgitating.

Good that you don't have to take it daily!
