Hello to everybody, i'm writing from Italy.. sorry for my bad english and for my intrusion.
In Italy there has been some excitement in the last few days:
the leading auto magazine, Quattrotuote, has performed a long term hard 100000 km test on the Kia Cee'd 1.6 crd 115 cv (diesel).
The overall result was very good, but for one thing (please forgive my poor translation): fatigue in the engine exhaust valves and bearing brass was very high, and the testers concluded that the engine would probably not have been able to stand more than 20-30000 additional km (!).
As you can imagine this has created quite many worries among the Kia (and Hyundai) owners or possible buyers (and raised discussions about the reliability of this test or the opportunity of an official Kia answer.
What I'm asking is: do you know of any similar problem to Kia Ceed/Hyundai i30 engines, especially diesel ones? Do you know of any other long term tests of 100000 km or even more?

Without knowing the conditions in which they ran the tests it is a bit hard to comment... For example did they let the engine (turbo) cool down properly after hard driving..?
Did they perform regular servicing? What do they call hard driving..?

I think that the biggest "problem" is, that Kia Ceed is sold very well - at least here in Europe.. In our country I think that ceed was the car that was most sold in 2009.. Of course that means trouble for other manufacturers, especially because of the fact that in our country cars from east were never on first 10 places. Here every year, it's the same result.. Renault Clio is the most sold car.. Ok..maybe you can find some Hondas or Toyotas on 5/6. place but that's it, you can't see a Korean that high..
So..how to decrease sale? By making "bad campaign". A lot of people will now say..huh..the Kia/Hyundai sucks. Their engines are junk...etc.. But people forget that (in case that the engine really "dies" after 120.000-130.000 kms) the car was driven HARD. Which can mean, it was pushed beyond it's limits, that it has been driven - pedal to the metal - when the car had been cold, they didn't let the car to cool down after driving like that... So that means it has been driven the way every car would brake down..
They should make that kind of test with some other brands and we'll see how they perform - maybe they've already done that kind of tests with other cars and maybe the "results" were better - but the cars can be driven "HARD" or REALLY "HARD HARD". And we can't really know how they've treated, driven and tested certain models....
If I tell you the truth I don't even expect the car to make it to 100.000 kms if you are "rough" with it.. It's quite normal the car to "go to hell" when it's driven "hard".. We've already had Hyundai Santa Fe, which was sold when it had 170.000 kms and we didn't have any problems.. I know it's not the same engine, but still..
Anybody here that has Hy. i30 with approx 100.000 km? :)

All I will say is
It depends on how the car was driven, state of the roads, reving of engine, servicing etc. We all know that a car that is NOT looked after will give problems even at low k's.

Exhast Valves have a hard time, because it is one of the hottest parts in the motor. they are just talking about the brass bush ( i'm not sure that they would use brass, i would think cast iron, but some use nickle bronz, just not as good for high temps like exhast valve in a turbo would get to)the valve slides though. ( at least that is how it reads to me.) Idleing motor before turning off would not make much difference to that part. they would normaly have a oil seal on thevalve stem other wise would be getting oil in chamber and smoke.
so in that test they pull the compleat motor apart to inspect everything?

Well the way I'm going I'll break that distance well before the warranty expires. (15k in 4 months)
Just have to wait and see.
But as others have said there are so many different variables which have not been listed. You cannot draw an appropriate conclusion from it.

One thing springs to mind when I read this - BMEP - Brake Mean Effective Pressure. The 1.6lt diesel has an incredibly high value. Maybe this has something to do with the longevity? I doubt it tho, as other similar turbo diesels dont seem to suffer from it. Only time will tell, but as I see it - Hyundai is trying to change its cheap and cheerful image, so building a marginal motor for some of its most popular models is almost suicide. Anyway, some BMEP of other engines to show how much the 1.6CRDi is cranking out for its size;

i30 = 15.9 Bar !
There is a few different ways of calculating BMEP, if you use the torque method, at max torque i30 has 20 bar! Thats huge.. 4pi x torque (nM) / displacement (m3)

I'm italian and I can confirm that Quattroruote is very influenced politically...
They usually review Italian and european brands better than the other...so,I do not trust that the proof was done in optimal conditions...
At now my I30 has only 4500km,I hope that someone with more km's on the wheels could have better experiences to post with Kia/Hyundai motors...

Just over 54 000 km on the clock and still running and driving like it has just done 10 000km. No issues, apart from the fuel filter replacement mentioned numerous times before.
If this is what will happen at just over 100 000, maybe I'd better trade it in real quick (just joking).
