Title: Reversing camera... Help needed
Post by: asathorny on April 18, 2014, 15:17:04
(http://i974.photobucket.com/albums/ae229/asathorny/reverse_zps95e44b46.jpg) (http://s974.photobucket.com/user/asathorny/media/reverse_zps95e44b46.jpg.html)

So far as I can tell the black and the white cables go to the reversing light in the rear cluster.    I am installing a do it yourself El cheapo reversing camera and I need to splice into the reversing light power so that it starts when I engage reverse.   So far so good.  Forward looking camera installed, rear camera 'work in progress'...

Question is, do I use the click lock splice conector on the white lead or the black lead.  Or, is it neither   :'( :'(

T'was a bit annoying doing the strip down, then realising I had to reassemble to some indoors and await some help from my internet chums <sigh>   Shoulda started the job in the garage ...

OK must me brew time  :goodjob: :goodjob: :goodjob: :goodjob:

T'was a bit annoying doing the strip down,

Are you reading the right instructions?

I don't want to go there and have this image of you stood there in your jock's.

How many wires are you joining 1 or 2.

If the unit is already earthed elsewhere, and the wire you're joining is to supply 12v, then you need to determine which wire is 12v + using a multimeter, select reverse and make sure the reversing lamp is illuminated when testing.

Not many 70 Y/O other than Alan would attempt that ASA  :hatoff:

Without using a multimeter I wouldn't be sure either (I have one you can borrow) :goodjob:

Thanks Phil...   I'll go buy a cheap multi meter.  I just need a live supply and was hoping someone had done similar and knew which lead it was <sigh>.....

Yeah thanks Dazz, pass it down the line

Thanks anyhow  :goodjob: :goodjob:

Some aren't on as much as us ASA (so give it time if you don't need a multimeter) It's either black or red if that helps!

I'm guessing that's on a GD? I would guess that the black is the earth and white is positive that would make the most sense haha but yeah a multi metre would be the best way to go

A multimeter isn't the only way if you're looking to distinguish 12V from Ground. Use a test lamp with an automotive bulb and a piece of wire. :victory:

If you don't mind the pain, you can also try touching each wire to your tongue, plus a wire to ground.  :sweating:

Okeeedokeee... nice weather today so I settled in for an electricians guessing (with a multi meter which I likey will never ever use again) game.   I now have a functioning reversing camera.

It a piece of  s.h.1.t really BUT should I decide to upgrade the wiring is already in.  I have not given it a full test yet, but I have made sure that it is working and that I have not bolloxed up the cars ECU et al.....

Thanks for the input, suggestions and lets not forget the comedy   :goodjob: :goodjob: :goodjob:

Asa, you must have misread or misinterpreted what Lester wrote.

You probably saw these words:

Quote
Ok now can you take a picture of what you see from the camera

.. when in reality he actually meant to write:

Ok now can you fill my pitcher with what you see for sale from c.a.m.r.a.

See?
