G'day folks,
I'm no muscle man but when I was down the beach the other day I opened the rear driver's side door of my 2008 crdi hatch and the whole door handle came clean off in my hand! A dude behind me laughed, as did I, but now it's time to fix it so I'm keen for advice:
Anyone heard of this happening? A search on here came up with nothing.
Should I try and fix it myself? I've done a little bit of door stuff before. Replacing a broken interior door latch on a 1997 Toyota Starlet almost snapped my mind, but I got there. Woulda been quicker to train a child with little hands, I suspect.
Are the $7 workshop manuals on Ebay Australia any good?
Should I just buy a handle from a wrecker and give it to the dealer to do?
Any other angles? I promise I won't track you down and rip you apart with my super-human robo-grip if your suggestion offends.

I would remove the doorcard first and foremost to see what your dealing with. Have a crack at it, if it all goes pear shaped what have you lost ???? :Shocked: :Shocked: :happydance: :happydance:

I haven't heard of a door handle breaking,but Hey it is only a bit of machinery and sometimes things DO break,Like asa said, take the inner door card off,assess the job and if you think it is something you can do,go to a wreckers and get a handle and do the job yourself.
I have found with the different vehicles we have had over the years I have always done small repairs like this myself,the hardest part is actually working out how to disassemble and re assemble the doors without damaging them,there is a tutorial on here somewhere when someone did in fact have to take their door cards off to repair something in the doors,can't remember waht it was now

Is it the lot or has the moving handle part broken off?
This happened on my old fd.
If the latter then it is a 5 minute fix.
Buy new handle.
Open the door and you will see a plastic circular cap.
Prise this off.
You see a bolt set inside.
Take it out.
Insert new handle into the door and refit the bolt and cap.

The moving handle part appears to be fine. There's a break in the smaller door mounted piece (see pic). Seems an odd configuration, like there's only one plastic bolt holding the whole thing in position. I know that can't be the case though. Breaks are rare.
Does this look like your break, eye30?

The moving handle's plastic bit which fits/hooks into the door mechanism broke off so when you pulled the handle out to open the door there was no hook to operate the internal door latch.
Looks the same so i just replaced the moving handle and the hook bit fitted into the mechanism

Okay, so after closer inspection it appears that this will be an exceptionally easy fix. It's similar to what you describe, eye30, except in my case the door handle itself is fine and it's the smaller exterior bolt cover to the side of the handle (the smaller part in my photo above) which broke. So your fix:
Open the door and you will see a plastic circular cap.
Prise this off.
You see a bolt set inside.
Take it out.
...will apply, except I will be bolting on a new exterior bolt cover. I'm very happy that it's such a simple fix.
I live in a small country town with no wreckers and no one seems willing to separate down to this tiny part on eBay or Gumtree. I wreckon :D the part will be cheaper new anyway so I'm trying to buy one online. Anyone got any tips? I'm instinctively reluctant to enquire with Hyundai. I got deep into promising ground online with epc.data and amayana but then I got blown to the wall with this wildly complicated end list:

Great to hear that it is not as bad as first thought.
Why not just give the dealer a call and see what they will charge for the item.
Nothing to loose in doing so.

Ps hope you do not have to buy the lot but just the part you actually require

If it's such a quick fix, surely a dealer will give you a decent price to fix it for you. Ot should be quicker and simpler, for you.
