Title: I30 FD noisy on startup .
Post by: Lawriemcf on June 22, 2014, 09:12:44
Quite some time ago I reported that my 2.0 petrol was often rattled on startup in the overhead gear rather like the old magna timing chain noise.
Hyundai were no help under warranty.

I'd listened to it with a stethoscope and couldn't  pick conclusively where it was coming from. I checked the tappet clearances and they were fine.

I eventually put the question to an "expert" on "ask now". A guy with a Mercedes background was sure it was a timing chain tensioner issue.

So I bit the bullet and at the same time as I replaced the timing belt I replaced the chain and tensioner as well.

That seems to have solved the problem.

I  hope that might somebody else with the same issue.

It's a biggish task but I believe it could be done without disturbing the exhaust cam and timing belt by simply lifting the intact cam and replace the chain that way.

Hi, do you mean similar to this?  :link: "Diesel sound" on warm startup (https://i30ownersclub.com/forum/index.php?topic=28925.0)

If so, better oil viscosity was the cure for my GD.

Yes, that sounds like it may be the same. The rub is I have sold my FD  at 93k and am waiting for production and then delivery of a GD Elite petrol.

I was hoping that the new Nu engine wouldn't have the same problem.
Ah well such is life.
