Swedish car magazine Teknikens Värld did their moose test to the i30 and it failed miserably because the power steering died in the middle of evasive action. They did the test many times and the malfunction occurred four times. Even when it didn't fail, test drivers doomed i30 to be the worst they have seen in long time in the moose test. :undecided:

That is slightly bothering. I wondered at first if it was just a faulty car but as they got the same result from two cars . . . .
I wonder how my old model i30 would do? Mind you I've never even had a single moose run out in front of me in four years. :)

I was a passenger in the car when a test driver demonstrated that test when the new model was launched at Silverstone in 2012. It performed faultlessly.
The only problem was the G forces during the swerves were so great I honestly could not believe I had survived. It was truly awesome.
The test was repeated with the ESP control switched off. Only a few cones survived - the car was spinning when it demolished most of them.
After that experience I am left to wonder just what the Swedes were doing - and why?????

After re-reading the article, and using a separate translation for a part of it, it does seem that it was only the latest car which failed - so maybe a one off.

I reckon it would be to do with the EPS that couldn't cope.
Certainly mine wouldn't.

I can see his problem,dope hase the steering wheel on the wrong side,all I can say is that particular test is totally pointless(in any car)now the reason I say that is,if you are driving correctly,you have a larger window of opportunity to aviod any animal on the road,as generally you see them well before you get to them,the ones YOU DON"T SEE,you don't get time to swerve,believe me,you simply hit them and it hurts immensly,believe me I know(not about hitting a moose)but I have copped a rather large Grey Roo in one of mine.
I have had to swerve severly on a few occassions to avoid a few Roo's and once a very Large wild Boar,not quite as hard as they were doing but very closely like it,never had the issue they did,mind again I haven't got the latest model

Could it be possible that the car is reacting to the initial input. The forces of weight distribution on the tyres will be hugely disproportional. In a non ESP car, the reaction to avoidance of an obstacle on the road generally leads to over correction and and ever increasing sideways forces leading to eventual rollover. Not convinced it was the correct reaction and based on Alan's personal experience it does appear this car acted differently. I went out today to test ours, but couldn't find a Moose, anywhere.
