Title: Pollen (cabine)Filter does not filter smoke or odors
Post by: i30mania on May 06, 2009, 22:46:15
Do you also think pollen filter does not filtering exhaust smoke or any smell from outside?
I think its because its just and ordinary cotton filter.
I try to find Activated Charcoal Filter but cant find it.
I also look to BoschCar parts.

What is your solution for that?
Can we tune the filter by adding an aktive carbon layer on it ?

Is your air pollution bad in Turkey?

No, but I am in the middle of industry as being a mech.engineer
There are lots of trucks in the traffic in my area.Public buses also produce smoke.
And the city is very crowded 16million people so traffic jams everywhere.
My average speed is 17km/h  :'(

Hi i30mania, I have a Citroen with a pollen filter, still lets fumes/smells into the car, I think that an active carbon filter would do the job but it might be that the air flow would be restricted. I will be in Istanbul for the F1 GP on June 5-7, staying with a friend that works for TNT.

Hi sparki30,
Good to hear your are visiting Istanbul, enjoy the city. If you have any questions feel free to ask.
I will be in the F1 GP too

I think our cars air flow is very strong, that wont effect much. I can reduce the fan speedone level higher.
I will do my filter myself by adding a layer on it and share my opinion with you.

The standard pollen filter does not filter bad smells or smoke at all, you're quite correct. It's a paper element type filter much like the engine air filter.

Can't vouch for whether the charcoal filter would help or whether it may cause other problems. Will be interesting to find out, if you choose to go down that road.  :D

I don't think this would fit UK models.

Mine is 2 pieces - 1 large and 1 small - which sit side by side to each other.

If it's dry at weekend I'll get my pollen filters out of there housing and post photo.

My handbook shows the same pictures as above but there are 2 (TWO) filters in my i30.

Here are pictures of the ACTUAL filters in my i30.

Given that they have only been in the car since September, 3 months, they are rather grubby and look as if they need changing again.  ps. they were new at the service as I checked.

I have a musty damp smell coming from the ventilation system in my i30cw crdi.  I took it to my local dealer in Brisbane (Keema) and they replaced the pollen filter at a cost of $95 and this made no difference at all.

There must be bacteria in the system.

In the UK you can buy an aircon cleaner which is a liitle canister you activate and leave in the passenger footwell with the aircon running on recirculate.  I reckon this would cure the musty smell but can't find the product in Australia.  Has anyone experienced similar issues and if so how did they solve them?

Incidentally I have always followed the manufacturer's instructions and only run the system on recirculate periodically.

Thanks

I am using this for my i30 http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260584136396&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK:MEWNX:IT (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260584136396&viewitem=&sspagename=STRK:MEWNX:IT)
and I think it filters out most of the fumes (or atleast the majority), and mine is the two piece filter as well, but through just squeezing it in a bit, it fits in eventually. Also, the price is barely anything compared to the genuine hyundai filter (you can buy atleast 2-3 for the same price!!!)
