Hi,i have an I30 CRDI 2010 model and since new it has been slow to go into reverse and as it is nearly 5 years old i took it back to Keema Hyundai and they replaced the throttle body in the auto and since then it has been good,a friend has the same as me and the planetary gear broke and he had to pay $4500.00 to get a replacement one fitted,needless to say he was not impressed at 140.000 km he was less than happy.Hyundai was nit interested at all.Is this a common problem with the planetary gear as if so i will consider replacing the i30 before mileage goes too high.

First I've heard of it BIGAL. But maybe some of the diesel owners on here might have more info. Check back every day or two to see what they've said.

No, that's the first for me as well. As with anything mechanical, failures can occur. There may have been some other fault that precipitated that event.
Can you give us more info, eg KM's traveled, vehicle age and Hy warranty status. Hy would have fixed it, if it was in valid warranty circumstances.

The 4 speeds have been getting a reputation for being rubbish. Just do a search.
Mine started making horrible noises but it was out of warranty. The mechanic said it was cheaper to find a second hand box rather than fixing it.
I got one with 68000km on it for $900. The labour was $820 including new seals, filter and oil.
As I drove home it started slipping and I was able to get all my money back. The wrecker said he won't sell them anymore because he has had to refund money on too many!
Then I paid $1200 for another one with 25000km on it. It's still slow to select reverse but I can live with that.
The mechanic is a transmission specialist and said I did really well getting 250000km from the original box because they have been known to fail at 30000km! He also said only the holden cruise has a worse reputation.

No doubt when they go wrong they are expensive to fix, I don't have any stats to prove my statement, but I'd like to know how many auto trans are fitted to i30 vehicles. Given their world wide sales, many thousands I expect. Some model variants are only available in auto. Given how the car is marketed in terms of purchase price, quality and reliability, I don't see any huge problems with the transmissions.
There would also be statistics for clutch failures or early replacements in manual vehicles. Cheaper to fix, but a failure nonetheless.

Never seen a single mechanical failure of a 4-speed.

The sad fact is that, if you do a search on pretty much any car and any fault, you'll find scads of complaints posted.
Not to say they are spurious claims, but you have to take into account two things. One. People only ever complain. They rarely post compliments. And two, whatever the number of complaints, you have to take them in the context of how many vehicles there are out there. As a percentage, the complaints are generally pretty low. And for every mechanic or specialist who criticises a product, you'll find another prepared to counter his argument.
40 years in the automotive business has taught me this.

Mechanics in the repair business are only going to report on the ones that they have repaired, never the ones that keep working.

Dunno what to tell you mate.
I'm on my 3rd box and it's a 2010 model. The guy who started this thread has given two more examples.
The wrecker told me that the last low km box he sold before mine also came back faulty.
I guess it's just up to our individual experiences.
Ps: I just purchased a second hand AC compressor for $200 as mine is too noisy to put up with anymore.
Today was 271000km. I'm having a bad hunday!
