Title: Decoding your VIN
Post by: Jen on May 24, 2009, 13:43:23
I am scheduled to pick up my new toy on Tuesday!  :D
We got the insurance certificate through and noticed it had the VIN number so I was searching here to find out what it all meant. Although I found a few good tips, I then went searching the net for something where I could work out all the number meanings without entering it in to some search engine (paranoid it will be used be someone improperly...)

I found a Hyundai Service Bulletin which isn't exactly current, but helps you work out details quite easily.

This is the PDF link: http://www.hyundai.auto.ru/vin.pdf (http://www.hyundai.auto.ru/vin.pdf)

And the HTML link: http://74.125.153.132/search?q=cache:y9pcwNj3VvMJ:www.hyundai.auto.ru/vin.pdf+http://www.hyundai.auto.ru/vin.pdf&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=au (http://74.125.153.132/search?q=cache:y9pcwNj3VvMJ:www.hyundai.auto.ru/vin.pdf+http://www.hyundai.auto.ru/vin.pdf&cd=1&hl=en&ct=clnk&gl=au) (I hope that link works properly, but if you don't want to download just copy the PDF link into google and search it to view HTML)

I won't copy it all here unless someone requests it, it is fairly long. But the overview is (of the 17 digits):
1- Geographic Zone
2- Manufacturer
3- Vehicle Type
4- Series
5- Body Style and Version
6- Body Type
7- Restraint System
8- Engine Type
9- Drive Side
10- Model Year
11- Plant of product
12 to 17- Serial Number

Hopefully that will satisfy the curious minds.

Cheers,
Jen

(P.S. wasn't sure whether to put this in the Technical section or here, so feel free to move if necessary! :) )

Thanks for the info Jennifer, much appreciated. I think we did have a thread somewhere covering some of that info but you presented it beautifully :)

Fingers crossed for a successful Tuesday pickup :D

I need some help

1st the good news - it's a K-M-H model
I can handle that the vin says  "series -> D -> SONATA(RHD), ELANTRA(XD)". I think the i30 is sold as Elantra touring in the us?
But what stands the 8th character for? Engine type, I know - but it's a "D" which isn't listed with 1.6 at all  Do I have a larger engine?

Sadly not. I masked the serial number (position 12-17) with 0's and once with 0-6 because I won't expose the full vin. But this shouldn't matter, it's a consecutive number anyway I bet.

It always replies:

I could not find an exact match for this VIN in my database.

VIN:KMHDC51DP8U000000
World region:Asia
Manufactured in:Korea
Year:2008
Make:Hyundai

this site (http://www.analogx.com/cgi-bin/cgivin.exe?Mode=Decode&VIN=KMHDC51DP8U000000&Submit=Decode) works neither ...
as well (http://www.decodethis.com/Default.aspx?tabid=67&vin=KMHDC51DP8UXXXXXX)
