What a great review. It is the model we are getting. Mostly pointless for Australian and UK dwellers though as we won't be getting the V8 Not yet anyway.

Saw a Genesis out on the road for the first time today.  I had a good look while next to it at the lights.  I didn't get to see inside.

The good:

1) It's big.  Really, really big, at least that's how it looks on the road.  It looks as wide as a bus.  Styling-wise, superb.
2) It's low to the ground and has a sporty, almost Jaguar look about it.
3) Nice wheels and lights.

The not so good:
1) Paint looked decidely non-premium.  The one I saw was blue, and the paint looked like it was from a cheap SUV.

If they bring the V8 to Australia, I'd struggle not to buy one.  But I'm not getting one as a 3.8litre 6.

Nice, but I would have liked to see the example that Tourer Guy saw. Maybe it was a little disguised for Oz.

Spec wise it's a nice car, but I think the exterior design is a little too boxy for my likes. Especially as a lot of the bracket competitors are a little more fluid in style.

His complaints about interior trim are pretty much the same as mine for the i30. Hard plastic trim where cloth covered trim would be better suited, and edge finishing that doesn't seem to line up (doors + dash as he pointed out in the video).
Also as he mentioned, Hyundai are doing really well at giving you a car that is 98% of an equivalent "x" brand vehicle. I can't help but think that Hyundai could give you a 100% car for just a little more dosh. And frankly, the first thing I would do with that extra cash, is ask the graphics designers & marketing teams to modernise the logo.

Don't get me wrong.. I would love to check one out and even drive one... I imagine it would be quieter and perhaps more grunty than the Calais and some of the stuff in the extras packs sounds great too..  :goodjob:

If we got the V8 I'd be tempted (though a 2-3 year old Jag XF diesel may still win) but I'm not a fan of V6 engines, so not for me.

This is Molly Taylor, daughter of Australian Rally Champion co-driver Coral Taylor at the launch of the Hyundai Genesis (today I think), just before she heads off back to the UK to compete in the Junior WRC in Rally Great Britain (Wales?).
Not sure why she was there. A possible change from Citroen, maybe?

Base model is $10,000 more than was first discussed, I think 60k is a bit steep for a base model with a V6 :disapp:

I agree (Hyundai are pricing themselves out of the market with these newer models ...

I got half a dozen of the Sensory pack Items and one of the ultimate pack items included in my approx $52,300 DRIVE AWAY price...

Makes my Calais V look like a bargain .. I got 3 years free service and 5 years warranty and 5 years road side assistance included too.. :goodjob:

Don't judge too harshly until you get up close and personal with the car. And even then you'll walk away only knowing half of what makes up the car.

As for pricing themselves out of the market, they aren't aiming at Commodores, Falcons and Aurions. The Genesis is at and above the level of the targeted BMW, Mercedes, Audi and Lexus. All reports that I've read have always estimated base price around $60000 which comes under luxury car tax.

It also has 5 years/75000km inclusive servicing.

Doesn't matter how good the car is when you compare with those brands.

Most carbuyers in the market for a BMW, Mercedes, Audi or Lexus would never ever consider buying a Hyundai, just because of the name.
In many peoples mind a Hyundai is still a budget car, so it will take many years to get into that market even if the Genesis is significant cheaper.

I don't know! I think Hyundai has been around long enough now and has earned itself a pretty good reputation, I know a few European car owners who are already thinking about the Genesis and quite frankly the euro cars aren't all their cracked up to be.

AMG Mercedes are slightly better but our Holden SS, Calais, Caprice and HSV's are all on par with the euro cars now days ( especially the HSV GTS 430kw  )  and people are starting to realise that the euro names are really just overpriced brand names whom in their own country are considered standard vehicles.

As cruiserfied mentioned we probably are judging a little harsh as the standard features and technology in the Genesis is quite amazing for that price really, not sure about the space saver tyre though but being a V6 they were obviously trying to cut down on weight in not overly important areas.

I am lucky enough that I could have afforded even the top Genesis model but couldn't justify spending that much on a Car (even $52 K was stretching it)

I'm sure the Genesis is a fine car and a bit better than my new one in the areas of NVH and Safety plus maybe a couple of other areas.

I think it will sell ok but I would never have forked out around 65K (drive away) for the base model...

I have to agree with Asterix on this.  Although we know that Hyundai make a very good product, and they are making headway into many markets, many people still see them as the "Cheap car".  They are making progress, but IMO it will take a few years to get any significant market share in the BMW / Mercedes market.  Again, just my opinion, but people that buy these cars don't buy them for the features, they buy them for the name.

For us, this is an entry level car into a market as yet untested by Hy. I think that once on the road, there will be many very happy car owners, IF THE PERFORMANCE AND HANDLING LIVE UP TO HY STATEMENTS. One thing holding HY back is their lack of new development technologies. Without that, they will always be behind the Euro cars. They need to develop important features that other car makers would want, not just repeat what's already out there @ about 85% which is what early reviewer's are saying. They will fall short in the area of map updates for sure. The system employed, should use the best maps and it should automatically update, free and seamlessly whenever a new update is detected, I would expect this in a car of this standard and something they could lead other brands with.

I'd love to have a crash in one, only because of the body safety score, of course.

Personally, I don't care about brand names. When I cruise along the freeway in the Diesel, I smile and every time we encounter a hill, the Diesel catches the petrol car and passes it without effort. That's what is important to me.

Lexus is just a Toyota and they seem to be included in the upper echelon class of car, so no reason Hy can't be there too, but they have to come up with the goods.

You mention free GPS updates and I agree, now in an environment when an $80 GPS unit can include lifetime updates. Speaking of which, my 'integrated' Mio Moov A430 temporarily faded in 38 degrees yesterday, so I'm really tempted to chase a cheap upgrade that will automatically sleep when the ignition is off and will include free updates. :victory:

Bump! Rather than start a new topic thought I would resurrect this one.

I had a good look and sit in a top of the range Genesis yesterday. A white one with all the bells and whistles (in the showroom at Motors Hyundai Devonport) Didn't take it for a drive though as Kristy was busy.

Must say it is a game changer for Hyundai. Even getting out of my opulent top of the range Holden Calais it felt pretty special and very sumptuous.

The fit, finish and comfort levels were mind boggling. Trish has a bad arm/ shoulder at the moment so she would have appreciated the powered open/close boot lid. Seats were softer and more padded than the Calais and all the interior materials seemed top quality.

Pity they are so thirsty or I might have considered one (when I bought my Calais)

Got into a new 2 Litre Turbo Sonata next to it afterwards and that felt very down market in comparison (under my Calais as far as interior ambiance was concerned) but obviously a lot cheaper than the Genesis and a bit cheaper than my car so to be expected I suppose.
