Hello All,
I'm very close to buying myself an i30.
I was told by a dealer yesterday that the Steel Grey colour has pretty much now been discontinued, and a new colour is being introduced. This new colour is somewhere between the silver and the steel grey.
Anyone know whether this is true, and know exactly what this new colour looks like?
Thanks!
Nev
-
Yes it's true, I got told the same thing the other day. Also, apparently Moonlight Blue has been discontinued to be replaced by a more sky-blue-ish colour. No idea what either of them looks like.
-
Two great colors being discounted? Why?
I was deciding between the two colors, than I chose third, but nevertheless, hope the new ones will be nice..
-
Why the hell would they change two extremely popular colours? Weird.

Maybe the Korean equivalent of K-Mart ran out of the base paint ??
-
This could decide whether i buy another Hyundai in the future. The steel grey
colour was the big thing that made me buy the i30.
-
Welcome nev75.. Unfortunately I think your sources are correct (we have been hearing similar on the site for a while)
I am fairly certain these will be the new colours...
Sky-blue (as in the popular Getz colour...

Hyper Silver.. (courtesy myrrh55)

Well, my Steel Grey just went up in value lol
-
Dazz,
Thank you for the welcome, and for the pictures showing the colours!
And yes, "Hyper Silver" is exactly the colour that he mentioned.
-
Will the Hyper Silver be a metallic colour?

Will the Hyper Silver be a metallic colour?
Doesn't look like it from the pix...
Here is the link I got the photo from (there are other photos - doesn't say it is metallic paint)

Doesnt look very appealing in the photos.... (the silver)
-
Wonder if Hemmi, Tim or Shambles (or anyone else good at photoshop) could recolour an i30 in these 2 colours to see how it looks...
-
Thanks again Dazz.
I have to agree with Lucifer, that it doesn't look too appealing. Why they have replaced steel grey with this is a mystery.
A photoshopped image of the colour transposed on an i30 would be good to see though.
At this stage I reckon that I'll go for the continental silver.
-
I cant believe this, Hyundai's steel grey is so much better than for example Toyotas and Mazdas steel grey, they are to light for my taste but Hyundai's is darker and has more depth in it. :(

No need, found these on the korean forum.

Thanks Hemmi..
So that's the hyper silver (looks like an iridescent there) and doesn't look too bad I.M.O.O.
What about the sky blue?
OR do you think the darker one is the Hyper and the lighter one the sky?
-
Thanks Hemmi..

I believe the lighter one is Hyper, It's not bad but not as good as Steel Grey, IMO.
-
I think it looks better on the i30 than on the Tiburon...
-
Thank you Hemmi,
It's not as bad as I thought it would look .. but agree that it's certainly not as good as the steel grey.

Here is the Hyundai Worldwide site ...Basically Head Office...
http://worldwide.hyundai.com/
and they show 11 colours for the 130 including the 7 we currently get in Australia (they are still not showing Hyper-Silver or Sky Blue for the i30)
Very strange!
You can jump from that site to sites in all other countries UK only gets choice of 5 colours as does USA and Canada for the touring..
But.. New Zealand with a far smaller market has choice of all eleven (it's not fair ... I'm going to bed!)

Don't forget Iceland with it's 320 thousand people and eleven colours available

That's it! I'm going up the house to "throw" some more paint on...

Does seem mildly bizarre to get rid of Steel Grey, but I'm sure they had their reasons. If I didn't live in the country where my car gets dirty and chipped all the time I would have definitely gone for Steel Grey. We have a Steel Grey SLX in the family and it's gorgeous. There must be some reason for getting rid of it, all I can think of is that perhaps they weren't selling that many of them. It's definitely the nicest looking colour but I don't see that many of them...
Interestingly, although Moonlight Blue is popular with some people, we always found it a very slow seller. We had an auto SX Diesel in Moonlight Blue that was in stock for over 12 months, which is unheard of with i30s, especially diesels. Only had one or two ever ordered in that colour too.
The one that sat "on the shelf" for so long is now my cousin's!
I'm sure they'll come out with some interesting colours. I don't really like the new colours they just brought out on the Getz, but at least they're interesting...
-
i quite like the hyper silver 8)
-
Does this mean we should stock up on Steel Grey touch-up paint?!
Sadly, I have had to get a little bottle of it already to deal with an embarrassing 'anomaly' (that occurred when the car was < 1 week old), so I have some....will hang onto it, it might become a collector's item!
The hyper silver looks OK IMO and I guess new i30 buys won't have anything to compare it to in a while, but I'd have though the current Steel Grey was a very popular colour.
-
Unfortunately it is very true, Steel Grey has been superceded by Hyper Silver. Fingers crossed, I should be able to get some photos of the Hyper Silver very shortly - when my CW is ready to be picked up. The trouble will be getting some comparison photos
-
The side badging on AUS spec I30's has been deleted from June production onwards....
-
Well, now the Steel Grey qualifies as a limited edition :D
-
I found a touchup paint catalog online and it listed hyper silver as metallic. Not sure I'm liking the hyper silver, especially if it's the lighter one of the two above. Thinking about canceling my order... :'(
-
I've just ordered the steel grey, (nothing was mentioned by the dealer) My current Mazda3 is silver grey and was 'warming' to the steel grey (wifes choice) Looks like I might now get my 1st choice, black :D
-
Saw this last night...
http://www.cairns.com.au/article/2009/06/08/46045_motoring.html
I knew I should have held out for black :)

I knew I should have held out for black :)
Thanx for the article.. No offence to my m8 shambles or anyone else with a black i30 but I reckon silver is easier to live with (in Aus anyway) and looks great on the SR and SLX...
-
We need black over here to absorb what little sunlight we actually get. Silver would have been my next choice
-
well, i have silver and like it but like white too, and gunmetal grey is nice so is moonlight blue. i like black but the black they showed me on an i30 ( was first i30 i drove, had metalic mixed in. i like jet gloss black like my Harley. but i would take any colour no worries. the colour you are happy with is the best no matter what the weather they have climate control  :)
my mate got a new Ford Territory Ghia Turbo 310KW LAST MONTH IN bLACK LOOKS OK, his partner just got a new Lexus with small four as her first car, in Black. so it's popular here too mostly with the younger or middle age.
cheers we have hand wash Cafe's so you don't have\ to keep them clean yourself.
-
From the horses mouth...so to speak.
Dear Mr Hepworth
Thank you for your recent email.
As far as I am aware the option is still available for the i30 in steel
grey. Please discuss this further with your selling dealership.
Kind Regards

They can shove that hyper silver right where the sun don't shine. I hate that colour. YUK
PS Happy birthday Hemmi :D
-
I was describing it to the wife when we were having a cruise around the other day and the best way to describe it was like a shiny grey primer :-( (although it looks ok on some angles..)
-

That's the description I was looking for

I took these pics the other day. I actually like the colour in person but not very happy if steel grey is still available and dealer mislead me.

It's growing on me..(don't worry.. your dealer wasn't the first to say it was discontinued)
-
I think we'd call that "gun metal grey" over here, in the land of no taste...
-
Can't say I'm a fan of that grey. It's like a really gloomy day. Though on the upside it might hide the dirt really well?
-
I am currently awaiting the delivery of my Hyper Silver SLX CRDi, at first when described to me by the sales person i was what the!!!!
After seeing a i30 in the yard it actually looks nice up close.
Plus the wife likes the colour so that is one less headache for me.

There might be a bit of old stock somewhere... (depending on the model you want...)

when the wife got her 1000km service yesterday the guy insales told me hyundai has a different factory now, thats why steel grey is going.he also said chrystal white will change to a different white like on the iload van.
-
I saw a Hyper Silver one the other day where I used to work, I reckon it looks pretty good in the flesh. I'd buy one in that colour, personally. Looks way better in the flesh than in photos IMHO. :D

Yeah.. I'd have to agree.. I've seen two now and it looks darker and less washed out in the flesh... It's quite a bit lighter than steel grey but is still quite dark until you see it next to steel grey...
-
well comments here seem to be positive for the silver at least :)
wanted to get around to hyundai today to see if they had one but no time. won't get out that way for days again now.
-
managed to get around to Hyundai today and guess what! they had the hyper silver there....aaand i quite liked it :)
it was overcast today and all the colours seemed weird, i mentioned to the dealer that the normal silver just looked off-white today, he agreed with me. so i will look at it again sometime on a sunny day just to be sure, but i did like it and certainly much nicer 'in the flesh'.

query
if i bought a steel grey SLX and wanted to add a spoiler after purchase, can i still get one? or will i proverbally be up the creek with no paddle (or in this case no spoiler).
there's a grey 2nd hand SLX at one of the "local" dealers.

That shouldn't be a problem - they would have had a large batch made and they'd have some in stock for SRs and the like. In a couple of years when the stock has run down it might be a different story but as long as you make your move soon-ish you'll be fine. Worst case scenario, you can buy a raw spoiler and have it painted to match. :D
-
The UK accessories list on has spoilers in primer, ready for painting.
-
thanks guys :)
there is grey auto SR in WA but that is too far away
-
Why the hell would they change two extremely popular colours? Weird.
Moonlight blue is one of the least popular colour here in Victoria.
-
would anyone know why on carsales some listings say 'Hyper Silver but some say Met Hyper Grey'
are they two different colours?

They would definitely be the same colour (reckon they are just "guilding the lily" by adding the Metallic prefix)
-
^i'm thinking they are the same as well, but its the grey vs silver that i s the real difference
i thought "perhaps" the silver was the mica and the grey was the metallic?
but i guess its more likely the dealers just have been calling it grey as its darker than the continental silver
