Title: So, while I'm waiting for my i30...
Post by: Jon on July 03, 2009, 15:42:53
...I need to figure out what to do with my current car!

It's also a Hyundai, but not nearly as good.  1994 Sonata GLS.  Not in the best nick - scrapes and holes in the front bumper (not my fault), paint job is a bit crap, and the engine is just about dead (I've stopped driving it because I'm afraid it's going to break down).  Some crap photos I took in the dark the other night here (http://gallery.me.com/jonhughes/100016).

So it would seem obvious to me that I can't really expect to sell it.  One of the dealers I spoke to in the course of choosing the i30 said it wasn't even worth bothering to value for trade in.  Which I guess leaves offloading it to a wrecker.  Know any good ones in Sydney?  Either that pick up, or are close to trains (or even better, but unlikely, on the north shore)?  Also, I've never done anything like this before, so anything I should know?

Should have come to the UK and got 4000AUD trade in for it under the scrappage scheme!

Stick it on Ebay, someone will snap it up - and you'll probably get more than from the wrecker, and they'll pick it up!

Just a thought but you could try and sell the good parts off it via ebay and then scrap the rest...

The alloys and the seats look o/k etc...

Couldn't you have it 'stolen'?

Yeh. Leave it down the local pub or railway station with the keys in it ;-)

Your best bet is to try ebay.  Even if you only get $50 for it they'll take it away.

I had a car written off.  No one wanted it and the engine was still okay, gear box, seats, dash etc.  Most I could get was the wrecker covering the towing fees from accident to panel beaters (some $250).  I'm sure he could have resold just a few parts to cover that cost and probably made a fair bit out of it but storage and wrecking cars is a long process and not something I'd trying doing.

I was so pissed off about it I forgot to take the amp and cross over out.  Just took my plates and left without thinking.

It is insured for $4000 :D  But I don't do insurance fraud :P

The other thing it has going for it is that it has 10 months rego.  I can't see selling it for more than the rego is worth, so I think wreckers is probably the way to go...
