Title: Fuel lid doesn't open properly. Problems solved!!
Post by: Bonza_Beauty_Mate! on March 14, 2015, 21:18:35
Hello,

When I go and fill up the car, I pull up the petrol lid lever at the bottom of the seat.... Go out to the filler and it hasn't popped open...
I have to use my key to fit in the gap and easily pry it open...
I can see this will be an increasing problem, probably start scratching it...

Can I adjust a cable or something?.... or maybe there's a spring that should pop open the lid a bit more???

Anyone else had this problem?

Bit of silicon spray inside on the hinge, needs to be done about once every 12 months. Spray it then waggle the door a bit to spread. Lithium grease spray would be ok but silicon much cleaner. Also you can bend the spring bit to make it a bit stronger if required, although I haven't needed to do that again since the first time it happened.

Fairly common in the FD (series 1) It is aggravated by the little plastic cable that keeps the cap attached. I relocated that on the wife's previous CW and she didn't have a problem again. If it kept happening, I would just cut it off... :D

I'll do the silicone spray thing..

Where do I find the spring? Do I have to remove the interior panel?
I haven't looked around at it much.. so I'm asking before looking...

It used to happen to mine as well.  I got the dealer to fix it.  As Lorian said, just a bit of lubricant is all it needs.  In the meantime, don't use a key as it will scratch the paint, find something a bit "softer", like a plastic lid to a pen.  Also, once it is open, exercise the fuel door a few times to free it up temporarily.

Something worth noteing on fd is behind the filler flap there is a sharp metal spring. If you bend that inward it puts more tension on the spring and your flap will open a bit easier.

Here are some photos from my FD...  The 'spring' and where it hides.

As you bend it by pushing on it - it, of course, moves inwards (and away)

So 'bend that inwards' isn't incorrect... unless you try to grip it firmly and move it inwards - that is a bit more difficult :whistler:
