Title: Wheel Balancing weights
Post by: Wingerdave on April 16, 2015, 11:25:52
A while back there was some discussion about the placement of wheel balancing weights on alloy rims (a thread about the choice i30 or Auris).

Well, i got my original Hyundai summer wheel set fitted today and......... lumps of lead on the outside of the alloy rims in plain sight. So it's a factory fit. All other cars in the showroom had them as well. I suppose it's a quick method, handy for production.

The stick-on weights (it would seem) are only for after-market wheels, or you have to ask for them at the first tyre change.

The big problem is that whacking lead weights onto an alloy rim can damage the protective coating on the rim.

It's a bit of a let down and not very pretty.

I wouldn't be happy with the clip on edge weights being applied to alloys ( fine for steel rims ), not they would be able to be used on either the factory rims I sold or the new rims.

I would of asked the tire shop if they use stick on  or clip weights, the tire guy near me uses stick on weights for alloys fitted on the inside of the rim. Some tyre balancing machines give you the options which one you want to fit

@ Isn't this the same discussion as previously, in the link you gave?

In that thread it was "off topic". The original thread was about the choice between i30 and Auris (pretty obvious to me).

Have I done something wrong? Do i need representation?  :)

They were the original wheels that came with the car. I bought it in Februari and had the winter set put on before i picked it up. I saw the originals today for the first time. The clip-ons will be replaced when i get new tyres.

If i'd known I'd have said something. Now, the car was back out on the forecourt and i had to get back to work, so no time to argue
