I was originally going to do a cat back new exhaust system but once I got it up on the hoist and had a good look over it I decided the only part worth changing was the rear muffler.
These systems flow fairly well as is, the headers aren't cast as I would have expected, they are stainless steel mandrel bent tuned headers as is the full exhaust system is also stainless mandrel bent :)
1 7/8" 48mm is the standard size and really wouldn't be worthwhile upsizing at this stage unless engine work was going to be done ( not happening while under warranty ) so a straight through Walker stainless long life muffler was all that was required, has a slight hum to it now but no droning inside the vehicle or barking noise out the rear and this simple change now allows the engine to breath/rev much more freely and is more punchy when pulling away at the lights.
The standard rear muffler was 6.8kg , 4 chambered and a massive restriction compared to what is in place now :victory:

Sounds like another nice mod Craig! :goodjob2: :goodjob:

Definitely worthwhile Dazz :goodjob2: I was almost going to put a highflow 2nd/lower cat in place of the standard but I didn't want to upset the sensors in the first cat with to much of a flow change which could likely put me in limp mode.
-
I'll have to have a look at your mods sometime, Craig. :)

Not a problem Dave, then we can start on yours :D

Not before it goes into JH for warranty work on the 30th. :)
-
@Dave, I think for your car all you'd want to do is something like a K&N filter and a freer flowing rear muffler as well, we'll see when we look at her :)

Pics, or it didn't happen.

I'm sure you've seen a stainless muffler before...they look like the one I installed :winker: plus I can't be bothered crawling under the car :)
Here's a picture of the monster that was replaced though

And this is the new one

what about the exhaust tips? :crazy1:

what about the exhaust tips? :crazy1:
I just reused the tip it came with, on the three doors you cant really see the tip as it's hidden beneath so it isn't worth modifying unless I was going to change the rear bumper.
-
Hmm. Actually you are right. The tourer is the same. :(
So what's next?
-
So what's next?
Don't know :Dunno: probably nothing now for the next 3 years while waiting for the warranty to expire, then might have it supercharged or cam'd...or maybe both :D :honk:
-
After a lot of homework I've decided I'm going to change the lower/rear cat to a high flow 150cpsi, any lower the 150cpsi and you can upset the cold start emission readings during service tests ( don't want any issues there  ), the standard cell count appears to be somewhere between 500 & 600cpsi so reducing to 150cpsi should make quite a bit of difference :fingers:
I'll know after next Monday or Wednesday...

Jeepers! You might have to fit a six point harness and hans device! :snigger:

Following, and where did you purchase the new muffler, I'm fairly interested

At a local exhaust shop ( Cannington Performance ), most if not all exhaust shops will sell Walker products, their stainless products are as good as any top performance brand at a fraction of the cost :goodjob2:

If only

Had the new catalytic converter fitted this morning, definitely gives a nice boost to the bottom end :D it has a metallic core which breaths better and lasts a lot longer as opposed to the standard ceramic core used in the factory versions
(http://i.imgur.com/zOKXIa7.jpg)
This is the factory catalytic, you can see how restrictive the core is, unfortunately I wasn't quick enough to get a photo of the new Cat's core before Sam welded it on but you can see straight through it being a 150cpsi compared to the factory one at 500 to 600cpsi

Might have to have a small test drive next time I'm over Craig (if you'd let me...)
Be interesting to see what effect all the mods have on fuel economy as well.

Of course you can have a drive Dazz :goodjob2:
I'm still sitting around the 6 to 6.5 ( where it's always been ) for economy so it's not getting worse, and I've probably been driving it in a more sporting manner lately too because it's now more enjoyable to do so :D
-
I'm currently getting 11.7 l/100km, which means I'm not having enough fun. I should be able to pump that up to 15 l/100km if I really try.
I'll give you a drive, Dazz, next time you're down here. It'll be a step back for Craig coming from the HSV though. Just a povo SSV.

@Jamie, interior wise your SSV would be a few steps up from my old Clubby.
11.7 isn't too bad, intake and a cat back will drop you down too 9 with a power increase, Maffless tune will give you roughly the same economy but with another 40hp increase...add extractors and high flow cats with the Maffless tune and you'll be looking at 80+hp
-
Thanks guys, sounds good! :happydance:

Already have catback, gives a nicer growl. It is still under warranty so I don't plan to get an OTRCAI and tune until that expires in a years time.
I don't really care that much about fuel economy. I have to support the industry that supports me!

I must have supported your industry for years to come with what the Clubby used to guzzle down :D

Here's a couple of photos of the new exhaust I had installed yesterday, ( sorry they're not the best quality :( ) full 2 1/4 stainless - High flow metallic CAT - mandrel bends with Mercury resonator and Mercury Tri Flow muffler.

Just waiting for the new headers to turn up now.

I'd take them back then and get the best quality.

A rich man could afford a better camera ;)
-
Too much noise suppression.
-
Not at all, moving up to a 2 1/4" system required minimal back pressure and a tri flow muffler will accomplish that and get rid of to much bark, the resonator is straight through and only removes the droning sound.
I cant stand the over sized exhausts and mufflers some of these idiots put on their cars, they sound absolutely ridiculous and generally make their cars lose power
-
Nah should have dropped the muffler box and just run a sweet hotdog at the rear with a 4" tip.

 that's sounds exactly like what I was talking about, the dork around the corner from me has just done that to his Lancer, every time he drives past the house in the morning I feel like going out and just smashing that car to pieces and then slap him senseless :crazy3:
-
:P seriously though it looks good. Im sure its got a nice note too.
-
Sounds alright at the moment, has a bit of burble to it's idle and reasonably quite when driving, will sound even better once the new headers go on...they arrive tomorrow :happydance:
-
Yeah and better once you get some soot in the pipes.
-
Yep, took the car for a 120km drive yesterday just to get her burned in.

We'll go for a cruise down to Bunbury or something next time you're over Dazz, it'll be finished ( as long as I don't think of something else to do :winker: ) and driving nice :goodjob2:
-
Whens the first track day? You need a rear swaybar next I recon
-
Don't encourage me Tim, I'm impulsive enough doing this on my own :D
I think if I was to add anything now it might just be a front strut brace, I don't go racing around but it will still help some through corners...can feel it lean out slightly mid corners at 50 - 60 km.

Sounds good Craig! :happydance:

The extractors got delivered this morning so they are currently over at my exhaust guys shop getting some modifications to suit the new exhaust, the difficult part of this is a jig has to be made up so the mods can be done without the extractors being on the car and the flange plates are also a problem since Hyundai use 97mm to centre holes and in Australia the closest we have to match is 95mm which means a lot of stuffing around
He'll do the best he can though and once I get them up to RPW so they can be installed for the tune they might need to make some further slight adjustments " hopefully not " :Good_luck:

It'll be alot flatter with a rear swaybar.
Good to see the headers showed on time.
-
Possibly but it sits pretty flat now, the sway bar with the GD independent rear is quite good I think, I can notice the strut flex in the front more so now with the stiffer springs and low profile tyres.
-
Which braces did you have in mind?
-
Well there's two, the first one is light duty and cheaper and maybe all that is required :link: Aluminum Silver Strut Tower Brace BAR Upper FOR Hyundai 2012 2015 Elantra GT | eBay (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Aluminum-Silver-Strut-Tower-Brace-Bar-Upper-HYUNDAI-2012-2015-Elantra-GT-/251802966935?hash=item3aa0a05b97)
The second one is more suited for racing as it's much heavier duty with a heavier price tag to match :link: 2012-2016 i30-Elantra GT Solid Strut Bar - Shark Racing (http://www.sharkracing.com/2012-2014-i30-elantra-gt-solid-strut-bar/)
-
Big gap between the two. Personally I wouldnt look twice at the alloy one, the brackets look weak and the beam would flex. Id definately save my pennies for the solid steel one.
-
I used a similar Duralumin one on my Mitsi and they work very well ( ultra strong ), it's only to restrict the flex and not completely stop it which is fine for street cars.
The other one would be rock solid and designed for racing but then that one would also weigh a ton, not looking to add weight.
I probably wont bother about it in the end as I don't go racing around, just a small thing I noticed that could be rectified if I was super keen :)
-
Compromise = Failure
I dont even like strut to strut braces. I can see me building my own on the racecar. Strut to firewall to strut to strut, a big triangle OR triangulate down the tower if there is room.
-
Tim, you're talking about a completely different requirement, a track car will obviously need a true "X brace strut setup" probably front and rear including a chassis X brace for added stiffness, not something that is necessary for standard street driven vehicles as you physically cant throw the gforces into them like you would expect on a track...something light just to give that added bit of steering response is all that is needed.
-
Yeah I was talking 100% track car with my last post but i still stand on my thoughts of the alloy brace, but ive got little experience to go on.
-
Nah should have dropped the muffler box and just run a sweet hotdog at the rear with a 4" tip.
I had a similar setup (minus the 4" tip) on my old Holden Barina and noise levels were fine...a little bit louder than stock but certainly not noisy enough to attract any attention from Mr Plod... :goodjob:

Lol you could run open headers on a Barina and not be much louder than stock :P too bad you didnt go the 4" tip though lol.

That tip sits to low for Rusty, he'd damage it in carparks :D
-
Thsts alright he'd get more street cred for scraping.
