Title: i30 in moose test, part 2: Still poor result

Swedish car magazine Teknikens Värld did their moose test for the i30 again. Although the power steering didn't fail this time, the i30 still wasn't on par with its competitors, nor was its siblings Hyundai i40 or Kia Cee'd.

Don't really care! I don't do this manoeuvre every day so it doesn't affect me. For how I use the car, its perfect.

I find it worrying..!

Of course we don't do this every day, but the car needs to perform in a safe way when a safety manoeuvre is needed.

10 or 15 years ago Hyundai was a budget car where "you got what you payed for" but today where Hyundai compare themselves with VW, Ford Mazda... and they charge about the same for their cars, they must perform as well as the competitors.

Not good enough Hyundai...  :disapp:

I agree, if a car is meant to perform a safety manoeuvre then it should perform it well.

I think that kind of test is usually done here in skandinavia when they test the cars. Of course we actual moose crash test also, but this kind of test is good where you try to avoid the actual crash. It does not matter if it is a moose, kangaroo or a human. I once saw a situation where one vw golf driver did this in 80km/h speed when he/she avoided crashing in to a shovel which accidentally dropped from the truck driving infront of him/her. I was really impressed how the car avoided the crash and stayed in full control during the whole "slalom". I would have not been able to do that kind of manouvering with my skills/reflex.

In scandinavia we have the actual moose crash test. Do other parts of the world have some sort of similar tests for the car which is somehow tied to the region? For example do aussies have kangaroo crash test?

Sometimes see big dead Kangas on the side of our freeway, which means that someone has hit them @ 110 km/h. Most likely a semi. Wouldn't like to hit one in our cars.

The Volvo test wasn't what I would call "successful" IMO.  :fum:

How fast are your trucks driving? Here all the trucks have speed limiter. They are only allowed to drive 80km/h.

Some are limited to 100 kph but some do 110!

Is it because the impact detectors are lower down - having said that I'm not really sure just what triggers the air bags

Hitting a moose mass, would surely decelerate the vehicle enough to trigger the air bags IMO.

That is actually how it is done here. In the areas where there are moose crashes the local hunters are given more moose shooting licences.

Interesting test. I heard the Mercedes rollover years ago was rigged. Anyway, the controversy helps sell more papers or whatever. Regarding bad things that happen to cars this tops the list I think, even if it occurred a few years ago now:

Certainly more critical than vehicle response to a sudden high speed change of direction. And another thing, how many drivers are going to respond like that anyway. Most I suspect are just going to jam on the brakes.
