A few years ago, if you were serious about photography, your best choice was to opt for a digital SLR. But over the last seven years a new camera format has emerged – one that’s smaller, more versatile but still produces high-quality pictures.
Also known as compact system cameras, mirrorless cameras look similar to digital SLRs. But while they have interchangeable lenses, inside there’s a significant difference: they don’t have the mirror mechanism which DSLR cameras use to display the image from the lens in the viewfinder.

Those mirror-less cameras are out of my price league. I will stick with my Lumix DMC FZ200 bridge camera.
Fantastic Lieca lens with 25-600mm equivalent zoom and a constant f2.8 throughout the zoom range. Combined with a 12MP sensor it's all I need.

There has never been more choice in camera systems and the current mirrorless implementations in full frame are quite excellent. If I were looking at a new camera system today for my own use thats probably the way I would go.
Having said that compacts have come a long way as well. The Sony RX100 a is top shelf unit and my son has one. For much of what most people need from a camera, something like this is probably the answer.

As I'm a trailing tech kind of guy and my 2008 vintage DSLR bodies and antique lenses are still delivering I'll not be updating for some time. I can't wait to see whats going to be available when the time does come to update though.

I have had a Panasonic G5 mirrorless for about three years, together with five lenses. It can take very good pictures when I actually have an excuse to take it out with me. Though as most of my trips out are to Tesco that isn't very often, so when I am using it I have to spend 30 minutes remembering how to use it to best effect.
Notwithstanding that I am waiting for the new Panasonic GX8 (http://www.techradar.com/reviews/cameras-and-camcorders/cameras/digital-slrs-hybrids/panasonic-gx8-1299185/review) to come down in price a little. :confused: That has in-body stabilisation which works together with the stabilisation built into their lenses, so should be an improvement.
I mainly use my mobile to take snaps and also use my Sony travelzoom which is much easier to carry about. The travelzoom is all I need really but I get urges to buy new tech despite not needing it. :)
