Welcome to the Club.
It might help to know what motor you have (Diesel or Petrol?) Any other symptoms? Does it seem to be running hot? I'm assuming you have checked fluid levels? If it is a CRDi it could be a fuel or fuel filter problem.
Driving with the engine management light on for two days is quite risky! Do you not have a friendly local mechanic that can do a cursory check? Very hard to diagnose by remote control. Hopefully nothing too serious though.

Scanning the ECU for stored trouble codes would be the first step.
You said your check engine light lit up so there is more than likely a code stored related to your issue.
Find someone in your area with an OBDII adapter that is able to pull codes for you and post them back here :goodjob:

I'd be opening that filter, to see what was the cause. If you have contaminated fuel, the problem may reappear. Hope it doesn't though.
