Title: Connecting iPhones with lightning pin to 2010 Hyundai
Post by: Steph126 on January 05, 2016, 04:04:44
Hi everyone,
I was wondering if anyone has come across a way to connect later iPhones to the Hyundai i30 in a way that I can still use the steering wheel audio controls. I rang Hyundai and they had no idea. I can connect my phone using the aux cable but the volume is really low, and I can't change songs without touching the phone.

This cord looks like it might work but just wanted to see if anyone else has found a solution :link: Hyundai I30 PRE 2011 Fully Integrated FOR Apple Iphone 5 5C 5s 6 6s Audio Cable | eBay (http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Hyundai-i30-Pre-2011-FULLY-INTEGRATED-For-Apple-iPhone-5-5c-5s-6-6s-Audio-cable-/131639318895?hash=item1ea650996f:g:M0UAAOSwwbdWP0Rv)

Thanks,
Steph

 :welcum: Steph,

That cable should work but it is about 4 times the price it should be! I thought they used to only be about $25!

Normally you have to be a member for a couple of weeks with a minimum of 10 posts to post in our wanted to sell or buy section, but if you want to post a wanted to buy add in that section for a cheap (or free) cable that someone is not using I will approve it! :winker:

I think I am thinking of the older cable, but still seems dear!  :undecided:

I tried a similar cable from eBay for my i30.  It didn't work.

I also tried one of those cables for my 4s which didn't work either, luckily it was only $6 wasted.

A genuine Hyundai cable has always been expensive...Buying a cheapy is just a waste of money...

Welcome back juicy :D

There are quite a few threads on or around the subject of iphone volume - try "iphone" in the search box.

Here's an example  :link: iPhone 6 and Bluetooth (https://i30ownersclub.com/forum/index.php?topic=36676.msg374622#msg374622)

Thanks for your input. I have a genuine cable for my iPhone 4 but it doesn't fit any of the newer iPhone models and Hyundai haven't released any new ones.

I did increase the volume on the phone but I had to have the car stereo on max to get a reasonable volume and it still leaves the issue of the steering controls.

I'm happy to buy any cord if it's going to work. Judging by the replies though it looks like it won't. I guess I will look into upgrading the whole sound system or just use my old phone for music and podcasts in the car.

Do what most of us do, buy yourself a flash drive and load that up with music....Much Better!  :goodjob:

I just leave my old iPod in the car, update it regularly with podcasts and new music (it isn't full).  Much easier and you can still have your phone connected to Bluetooth (if you have it).

Will one of these work? Only a couple of bucks

Worse comes to worse, find an fd-01 head unit where you can just use your standard supplied USB cable

Not sure, as seller says "Note: This cable is for data transfer and charging only. Audio/video output is not supported."

I am pretty damn sure that one won't - the 30pin cables had separate analogue (audio) pins (I don't recall off top of head if they also had digital audio pins) - where as the lightning (8pin cables) are digital.  So any cable that supports audio conversion, for devices that can't read the digital music stream from an iOS device over USB (IIRC the PA710, etc.. can't), would need to do the conversion it's self (likely via micro and/or some DACs).

Which is what I think the cable in the ebay link in the original post is claiming to (and presumably does) do - however I am not sure it is really worth that much and who knows how well it does it.

Also notice the one in the original post lists it as 'Quality OEM cable' - to the best of my knowledge Hyundai never made a cable like this so it isn't OEM on that count; And secondly the picture clearly shows heat-shrink around the rather large plug at the lighting end - the large plug will contain the aforementioned conversion circuity - this is a technique used in small/custom production (and/or re-manufacture - in this case possibly taking two pre-made products/cables... breaking/cutting/unsealing one... and fitting the other cable into it) runs and/or for specialist use and maybe keeping the plug shell together... presumably that is the case for this cable (rather than being directly around the circuitry... which is also done).

I would be going for keep using older an older iDevice in car or a USB stick.

And either keeping an eye out for an FD-01 (which does digital audio from iOS devices and also does hands-free inbuilt into headunit) and/or look into aftermarket headunit - if you really want to use your lightning connector iDevices.

As Dazzler said the cable in the original post should do the job - but seems expensive.

One small note about FD-01 head-units - I have found the mine will start skipping in the same places on certain tracks... seems to do it for longer tracks (esp. such as podcasts).

Stumbled over this while looking for something else... claims audio controls can be used.

Really appreciate the replies everyone!

I actually emailed the seller of that cable ibrokeit and they recommended the cable in my original post.

If I end up buying it i will report back if it works!

Thanks again.

No worries! Don't be a stranger (like juicy was)  :winker:

Still reckon that a thumb drive is simpler (no connecting/ disconnecting cables) heaps of capacity per $ etc...

Ahh I see.  The cable that I linked to is also probably quite expensive for what it is... a USB<->Lightning cable and an analogue audio cable - which are almost certainly electrically separate but molded together.

Cool.

Update!

So I thought I would finally update this in case it helps someone else.

Thanks to Shambles' info on the iPhone volume I coped with the aux cable for a while but decided I really wanted my steering wheel controls back. I ended up buying an original apple adapter to add to my OEM Hyundai iPhone cable. Like this one: :link: Lightning to 30-pin Adapter (0.2m) - Apple (AU) (http://www.apple.com/au/shop/product/MD824AM/A/lightning-to-30-pin-adapter-02m?fnode=97)

This one also worked but I couldn't plug it in without taking off my phone case: :link: Lightning to 30-pin Adapter - Apple (AU) (http://www.apple.com/au/shop/product/MD823AM/A/lightning-to-30-pin-adapter?fnode=97)

It was expensive but apart from the occasional glitch it's working well and so are my steering wheel controls  :yahoo:

Thanks again to everyone who tried to help.
