Title: Rear Window Washer gone all silent
Post by: Shambles on September 03, 2009, 18:51:42
As title, needed to use my rear washer coming home from the dungeon

-> Silence <-

Not used it for ages as the UK rain normally provides enough liquid

When I got home I confirmed that there is no sound from near the washer bottle, indicating a pump or fuse issue. I tried the stalk switch in rolldown and rollup mode but still no water or sound.

Going to the fuse box under the bonnet there is just a single fuse (fuse number 1) which has "HL/WASHER" on the legend but that fuse is fine (and the windscreen washer works perfectly). Interesting that my owners manual doesn't show any washer fuse.

My question is, does that same fuse also cover the rear washer (ie, if it's removed does the rear washer stop as well as the windscreen washer)?

If so then the two washing systems share the same fuse and I have either a pump problem or an issue with the switch on the stalk.

I'll get this seen to when she's next in for service at the end of the year, but it would be useful to know if anyone gets a spare moment if they could try the above little test on my behalf please?

Eeeh yer a grand lot :D

Normally I would be the first out there and having a look for you mate, but it has nothing but chuck it down all day and I aint getting a wet rear end to check your rear-end if you know what I mean

I'm sure that some of our sun loving Southern Hemisphere friends will go out in their fine Spring morning to have a look for you!

Cheers bumpers me old mukka, and thanks for the sentiment.

No hurry on this as I rarely need it, for the same reasons you don't wanna get yer ass soaked

Strange that I needed it tonight, as where I work near the coast we get a lot of sand and salt in the air and it deposits nicely on the windows, but the rain didn't clear it before I set off

Just removed the fuse and BOTH front and rear still spray water.

As there is no sound it seems as if the motor is knackered.

If it is the same as my old Accent there is 1 motor which does both front and rear.
It's only a 15 minute change job so get the dealer to order 1

Aah cheers eye that's really good of you :) thanks mate

If the fuse marked HL/WASHER doesn't protect the washing circuit then I wonder which one does? I did check all fuses marked as "spare" and they're fine.

If it's a single motor and it's knackered I think the front would be affected. Maybe it's not the same as the Accent. Agreed though it's more than likely creamed :(

So that gives my dealer some work to do.

- 37,500 mile service
- steering rack replacement grommet
- washer motor
- drivers door paint & polish

On my Accent the rear stopped but the front still worked, just like yours.

Shame, I like sorting things out myself...

Just to add to that I looked at the elantra Touring wiring diagram. The rear wiper and pump are on the same circuit, so if the wiper works then it can only be the pump or the wiring.

The front washer is a seperate circuit.

http://www.hmaservice.com/data/Passenger/HY/HMA/ENG/ETM-Images/HY-FD13-IMAGES-ENG/efdsd9982an.svg

The rear pump and wiper connect to the single 15A "RR Wiper" Fuse (left row, eight down).

Thanks Lorian. Just checked my OM and that fuse is marked "wiper relay", but as my wiper works it must be as you say, ie wiring or pump.

I wonder what fuse 1 protects then

Anyway with all rain in the NW I've hardly use the washer during the last 12 months.

I think I still have the solution from my last service and I bet on the invoice it will have:

Top up Washer Solution £megga£.

I'm going to fill it before I take it in and see if they try to charge me

I made the mistake of not topping my fluid up prior to my last service and got charged [what I later worked out to be] the equivalent of £20/litre for a cupfull of Hyundai approved washer fluid

when my wiper fluid got topped up, I asked the service desk what the extra charge was, and they said that it was for wiper fluid just so that the lines don't clog up because supposedly the hyundai wiper fluid containers tend to do that. When I asked what exactly it was, he just said that it was practically the same as windex and just chuck some of that in the wiper fluid container..but thats just what my service centre told me

I wonder if this may have contributed to your problem Shambles?

With the Hy approved fluid in the bottle has it has dislodged the cr*p and this has caused the motor to fail?

If this is the cause get them to repair it under warranty.

My plan is to try to get to the motor this weekend to test it.

Since I last used the washer (which was probably 6 months ago) I've removed the radio fascia and fitted a blue flashing LED. Hopefully I haven't disturbed something in the electrics but I'll be checking that too.

These little pumps often gum up. Taking both inlet and outlet pipes off and blowing hard into the outlet pipe will often clear it.

Easy to say mate. I've had a hard look at the water container and it doesn't look that easy to get to. Maybe have to remove some items of the inner wheel arch :(

You can get at the bottom of the water container from below.

You will find a panel has to be removed.
Either pull studs or screw studs.

To ensure you have space etc to work you will need to elevate the car - ramps but NOT on the jack!

Had another ganders tonight. Doesn't look much underneath to remove, but looks like the inside wheel arch is a flexible panel and not held on by much. Need to get a jetspray on it as it's got caked up. Also need to remove the drivers wheel by the look of it

Just had a flick through the BCM schematics and the washers are both linked to it

So I'm gonna unfasten my LED mod and see if that changes anything.

Pulled the twin power outlet out and disconnected the LED

No difference. No pump :(

Roll on a dry weekend to get intimate with her undersides...

I have been going over this in my mind and can remember that on my Accent I had this issue and it was due to a filter type thing clogging where the washer lines left the bottle.  Again you had to get to the bottle via the inner wheel arch and clear it but after the first time I got quite proficient at just pulling the liner away and groping about to remove the "filter" and clean it up.  I think I had to do it 3 - 4 times in a 3 year period.

Cheers chaps.

I could easily just leave it to the dealer to sort out in December but you know what? The thought of them completely refilling an empty washer bottle from empty leaves a sour taste in my mouth - considering what they charge for simply topping it up at a service

Now.............at my service on Friday I wonder how much they will charge to top up my topped up washer bottle?

Be interesting to see if they put it on the invoice.  I'll certainly be challenging them on this if they try to ££££ me.

Be interesting to see if they put it on the invoice...

They will claim they had to check the washer pumps, wiper blades, suitability of cleanser and overall operation.

That's almost a verbatim quote from my last service

When you take it in soon for the work to be done - Get it fixed under warranty.

The reason I say this, is if you cause additional problems or damage any bit and pieces when checking it out, then HY UK will refuse to honour any warranty claim on the unit or other bits and pieces.

Let them have a look at it because if is not the motor then I can see you having all the bits out strewn across the front room
