Post by: sheepman on February 23, 2016, 21:00:52
I have a 2009 old shape i30 2L crdi premium its been a great car few problems apart from wearing parts ,recent complete brake overhaul it now done 98,000 miles on scottish roads which are pothole ridden and very mucky with salt in winter ,the cars probably not worth a lot of money and i am tempted to keep it going till nit starts to cause major problems anyone any experiance of high milage i30s and what i can reasonably expect with luck

They seem to be doing very well here, we also get way to much salt on the roads, coupled with the dust that studded tires tear up from the roads, gravel and potholes etc. Plenty of I30's on the second hand market with 150000km-300000km that look good. I think that Hyundai do extra corrosion protection in Sweden though, on all newer models. They score well in all the tests the magazines make anyway. There seems to be some cubbyholes that might attract a little extra salt, like around the mudflaps that I make sure to rinse thoroughly when washing.

And as always, frequent washing in salty conditions, every two weeks they say here for a new car, more if you do a lot of kms, but once a month can't hurt even an older car. is always good for keeping rust off the car, especially if its in a climate that hovers both below and above freezing all winter like where I live. If its colder than -10 all winter its not as important, since the salt won't start to corrode until the water melts.

Have same thoughts. My 2008 (born dec 2007 so just turned 8 years) now have 248,000 km on the odo and still running smooth. Have had no major issues and expect to keep it for another 3 or 4 years (75-100,000 km) if it keeps behaving.

Have same issues with the salt on the roads so when the car was 3 y/o I gave it a complete PAVA treatment where all cavities was sprayed with a thin penetrating corrosion protective oil and the bottom got the thick wax-like protective layer.
