Title: How to recondition the leather stearing wheel?

Anyone reconditioned their leather steering wheel?

Can anything be done in the situation shown in the photos?

Personally I'd just give it a rub over with some warm water and detergent to clean it and then apply some dark 'leather food' .

Or just buy a nice leather cover on eBay and stitch it.

What dark "leather food" do you recommend?  Is there a specific product that works well?

I have purchased a different vehicle than the one associated with the photos above where the steering wheel leather hasn't suffered (yet).  However, I'd like to avoid a similar thing from happening.

Wheelers Natural Beeswax Leather Balm.

Awesome stuff, though not cheap.
