Title: Rear bumper protection installation - why above 18 degrees celsius

Hi there

This is my next project with the tourer, a rear bumper protector, hopefully it will protect from kids dragging the school bag out from the boot.

My question giving my limited time and Melbourne weather:

Why all those 3M tapes said they need to be installed in an environment above 18 degrees  celsius?

What if I do it during the night at the garage? Probably I will need to wait 2 months before we have a day with more than 18 degrees.

I have heard of people mentioning the use of heat guns but not sure if a hair gun will do and whether I need to heat the bumper or the actual protector with the tape.

Any advice or misinformation is appreciated.

I did a bit of research and at lower temperatures the adhesive goes a bit hard and doesn't bond as well... but it says it can still be satisfactory. A hair dryer on the bumper should help IMHO.

How about a bucket of hot water and volunteers to dry the area as quickly as poosible  :idea:

I reckon a dry heat source would be better... :cool:

If it's cold, the heat would be patchy IMO.

Not sure what link or pdf I should see but thanks for confirming that it should not be that bad to try in cold weather but not in a wet environment.

Now I just need to find time to do it.

So this ir roughly what happened.

A thermometer will always be handy not only for your kids temperature.

I also used a hair dryer not to mention that I turned on the heather at home, thank god there is a door to enter the garage from the house or viceversa

But probably not even installing the protector two weeks before would've save me from that scratch  :faint:

All in all I am happy with the result.

Thanks for the advice about the temperature I think it worked great.

That's interesting, my wife these days loves any chrome decoration, in my case it was a must to install this to prevent (or minimise ) scratches in the bumper at the end we agreed it had to be done.

She has one of those things with a flap on it that you can flip out to protect the bumper. (keep it clean guys) I still have a cut to size clear protector somewhere that would do the same job. The wife like some chrome stuff, I got chrome door handle covers and mirror covers for her tourer. :goodjob:
