hi,
Ive read here quite a bit but havent ever actually had to write before - searching has always helped me well enough until now...
I recently picked up a pait of Rola racks very cheaply but without the mounting bolts. I am planning on cutting about 1cm off them to make them fit our i30, but also need to buy myself some bolts to attach them.
Does anyone know the thread pitch and dimensions of the bolts I am going to need? I was planning on heading out to a fasteners place and getting some cheap bolts rather than trying to get them off Rola or Hyundai at a grossly inflated price (especially since the bars only cost me $10...)

Hi Lance, not sure if this helps a lot, but the Oz Thule site list their i30 (hatch) fitting kit as including screws for the threaded roof anchors with the part number 31304.
Decoding that was a bit harder than i thought, but I eventually found a Korean Thule Parts Google Docs document that lists all their parts, and this is the description for part No 31304
SP 31304 Screw MC6S M6X16
That latter bit (MC6S M6X16) means SOMETHING to screw/nuts'n'bolts people I think !!! (I believe 2nd element means 6mm thread x 16mm long... and the first bit is the thread indicator... Metric something or other... hex key head?? ... .. an engineer may know.)

I looked at those supplied with my thule mounts. They are M6X60mm high-tensile studs. They are longer because they go up into the thule fixpoint mounts. There is a collar on the stud at maybe 10mm or so that stops it going into the roof too far. The required tightening torque is listed as 6nm.

I should have mentioned Thule make several types of racks / bars for the i30... they could each be different lengths... the thread would be the same on all of them though.
And that Stainless tip Steve ... I think you just decoded the S in MC6S for us :)

My thule studs aren't stainless, but the look like some kind of high carbon steel to my (untrained) eye.
I've never seen anything uther than a standard (fine) thread on the M6 bolts available in the UK. Certainly the thread on mine I would describe as fine.
In fact here is a picture of them fromt the thule site. This was about a product recall, but give you a good view of the bolts (wait for the pic to cycle around):

id say that's course :idea:take the bolt numbers that blue posted and show the person in the bolt shop. and maybee even take the nutted end in also. :razz:

i wasnt expecting anything like that kind of response....
I'd actually already sussed that it was an M6 by looking at it closer once i got home, then taking one out of my bike (its the bolt for the brake mounting) and trying it. It seemed a little wobbly, but no more so than it was on the bike.
Not sure how long to get it, but plan to go to a bolt supplier after lunch and see what they have, and aim for just long enough! I was wondering about stainless steel/what material, so Im glad to have that cleared up already without even having to ask it!
On the same topic but a different issue - the bottom of the Rola racks has two plastic knobs which I would think match into a rubber 'washer' (but long and flat if you get my drift) to stop the racks from scratching the car. Is that right, or are these knobs actually meant to dig the hell into the mounting strip on top of the car for additional grip? I went to clarks rubber and have seen a bit of rubber which I can cut and shape to keep myself scratch free. Maybe I should just cut the knobs off and go with a flat rubber piece rather than shaping the rubber around them?

So would this be the way the guys mount there aerials in some of the Korean pics ?
I want to mount my UHF aerial like they have rather than on a light bar I have on the front...

Yes, it does look like its bolted to the roofrack mount hole (fixpoint), but maybe it's a little too far back - someone who has their car already will be able to confirm.

these bolts look like they are zinc or gal coated.if they are stainless steel they wont be magnetic.[an easy way to check if s/s]

Actually the new ones (mine was manufactured well after the problem dates) are back to being the dullish black colour.
