Title: What is stick slip?
Post by: Bubbacpt on June 02, 2016, 12:43:50
I have an issue with my I30 1.6 crdi when I move off in first gear or reverse I get a very slight metallic sound from the clutch at biting point. The clutch and gears works perfectly normal. I have called another Hyundai dealer and they have told me they know of an issue called stick slip and sounds exactly like I described to him. What is stick slip in more detail please. He says it can come and go and I can get rid of it by letting the clutch slip slightly to clean it?

I have been involved with this site since its inception (over 8 years ago) and never heard that term mentioned. I just searched and your reference is the only one!

Hopefully somebody knows the term!

Never heard of it but it sounds like there is some sticky material on the mating surfaces of the clutch, which can be eroded. If it was my car, I would give the engine some revs and start from 2nd gear a couple of times to increase clutch temperature.

Note, THIS IS MY PERSONAL ADVICE, NOT ADVICE FROM THE I30 OWNERS CLUB OFFICIALLY.

The stick-slip phenomenon, also known as the slip-stick phenomenon or simply stick-slip, is the spontaneous jerking motion that can occur while two objects are sliding over each other.

Thanks guys, the issue now is do I take the car to my dealer who I've no doubt will tell me my clutch needs replacing at my expense, even though it's not 2 years old yet due to wear & tear but was ex hire car or if I continue to run with it will it cause any more damage?

very hard to diagnose over a forum conversation, two scenario's you say it is an ex hire hire cars live a hard life,so the slight metallic sound on engaging could mean the clutch plate is down to it's rivets,if this be the case depends on how much you drive it,the clutch will start slipping and then obviously eventually stop working, second scenario is the second dealer is right and being a hire car the clutch plate could be glazed and him suggesting you slipping the clutch would clean off the glazing of both the clutch and pressure plate personally if it is not slipping and is working OK I'd just keep driving it,be nice if modern cars had what most older cars had and inspection plate on the clutch housing, you'd be able to make a call on what to do without pulling the box out

Just a thought, but I wonder if replacing the transmission fluid or adding an additive to it would reduce the noise/effect?

Dazz, I think if it is a manual g/box there should be no oil present in the clutch housing where the clutch disc plate is situated only where the gear box housing is. If the noise is in the gear train what you suggest may help.

I thought it might be related to the gear change some how...
