Title: Is it time to sell the i30?
Post by: dammit on December 23, 2016, 12:12:50
My 2012 i30 hatch (trophy model) is approaching the 5 year mark. It has only done 50,000km.

It is very reliable and hasn't really let me down to date. However I am wondering if this magical 5 year mark is the point where things start going down hill and costing a lot more....given it coincides with when the warranty runs out!

This year I have had a power window come loose and the window couldn't go up anymore, I think a clip or cable broke inside the window. Now the other side is starting to go very slow when winding up/down with the button, I fear it is next. If this wasn't warranty it'd be a $200 repair?

Next up the rear door lock has finally decided it is on the way out, making a clunky grinding noise every time I lock the car. Again this repair would be about $200.

So given there are 4 windows, 4 doors, I am wondering if this is a sign of things to come and maybe its time to bite the bullet and sell / upgrade?

This is the classic conflict between the head, heart and pocket.

Only you can decide to suit your own circumstances.

It's not easy - because your car is low mileage and it is going to cost you several thousand to trade up. Conversely, you may have to spend possibly 1000 over the next 3 years in repairs.

It's a dilemma we all face - in my case the heart and pleasure of a new model always wins.

It's up to you. I've got a 09 i30CW that has had its issues, but as a car it has been a pleasure to own.

I'd love to buy a new Tuscon, but find it hard to justify when I still enjoy driving the FD.

Hyundai did a great job making the FD a robust car.

I'd keep it. What's a little maintenance, compared to buying a new car.

Honestly, what Phil says is the sensible thing to do.

Unfortunately I'm not sensible and if the finances permit I swap cars when the ashtrays are full or I've worn the nobly things of the tyres, whichever happens first...  :-[

I upgraded the Wife's 2010, 2.0 Petrol Manual CW to a new 2014 1.6 GDi Tourer before the CW's warranty ran out as I was worried about the slim chance of an expensive power steering repair outside the warranty period. It cost something like $15K? and 2+ years of reminding about how much she loved the CW's Colour and 2.0 litre "zip" around town...  :crazy1:

My FD is one month past its 7th birthday and just over 90,000 klms.
One relatively minor steering issue which I worried was the big problem but it was just a bush.
I looked at an Elantra a while back and while my wife and I both love the shape,  I couldn't justify the changeover price.
There would need to be a hell of a lot of repairs in the next 2 or 3 years to offset the cost of a new one.
So, I'll sit on mine for a while.

G'day mate,

The 1k you might need to spend on your low k FD will be wiped off a new one when you drive it off the lot. Though the $19,990 drive away is fairly tempting.

Stamp duty alone would cover the cost of a lot of repairs.

Good run out deals at the moment around OZ. i30 Active - Manual  - AU$19990. Cheap as chips.

The more you buy the more you save.

Any trade in figure given for the 2012 Trophy?  If you get 10 grand I would trade and get out another 10 grand for the run out i30.

BTW, been AWOL for 6 weeks, USA and Panama Canal cruise. Have to get my Credit Card retreaded. :crazy1: :blubber:

You certainly are a seasoned traveller Lester!

....and an optimist!  :whistler:

Probably get offered about 7k down here for a 2012 Trophy but they would try and sell it for 12K...

Looking on Carsales you don't have to work too hard to get an auto for $20,490 with a 1k gift card.

So $19,490 drive away.....23k for a diesel auto.
