Title: EPS, ESP lights on and knock in steering?
Post by: taylorfx on January 02, 2017, 04:21:53
I'm really concerned I took my 2009 i30 for a service and they said there was a knock in my steering and would cost $360. I've only just noticed and now that I have it has gotten abit worse. I also have noticed my ESP and EPS lights are on? My steering feels just a tad bit tighter/stiff. I took it to a different place after my service and they said it was a 3k job!!!!! What could it be? I'm planning on taking it to Hyundai but just wandering if someone had any similar issues. I brought it second hand.

 :welcome:

Hopefully it is just a worn "knuckle" thing in the steering column which was a "sort of" warranty fix ($360 might be mainly the labour cost because the knuckle should only be a cheap part) I'll try and find a link to a discussion about it to add below.

The other repair place is obviously assuming you need a full new steering column which could be around $3000 retail although maybe only $500 or so if you can source a good one 2nd hand from a wreckers or somewhere.

Who did the service? Has it had the Brake switch and EPS checks done by Hyundai under current recalls?

Daz, the wisest man in Australia,  has given you all the probable causes for your problem. Lets whittle a little.  :)

Question 1: your quote for $360 was to do what? ????????

There was a recall to replace a rubber bush in the power steering. I think that some of the replacement bushes were also defective. So, even if it has been done before, you may be up for another.

Question 2: Assume your steering is not locked, do you feel the knock when you turn the steering wheel, before the engine is started?
If the knock only occurs after the motor is running ,it is probably the bush.

Cost of bush $5. Time to do the work 4-5 hours. = $360

Hope this Helps , cheers G

A word of warning regarding the EPS light on.
Your Battery could go flat.

The power steering on the i30 is an electric motor mounted on the steering column (above your knees).
The steering's central position is electronically set during manufacture or reset in a workshop.

If, due to an accident or faulty part, the power steering is detecting a new 'centre', the ESP light will show.
This can confuse the Power steer and the EPS light may show.

Sometimes, the EPS will not understand that the vehicle has been turned off, so it will remain powered and eventually drain the battery. You will feel the steering wheel remaining light to turn when the car is parked ( key out ! ).
Disconnecting the battery momentarily will fix it...EPS will de-power...until next time you drive.

The rubber bush fault described above is quite common . The knock is really hard to pin point , therefore other components such as universal links and steering rack components are blamed.
