Title: Near side tail light too bright??
Post by: Mad Mike on January 18, 2017, 13:21:56
Hello,

Hoping someone can help.  I've noticed that the near side tail light comes on much brighter than the other.  I've checked the brake light circuit and all works fine. I've taken out the bulb and checked its the correct wattage and cleaned up the contacts in case its a bad earth.  No joy :-(

Has anyone else see this before?  Anything I could check?  Can anyone point me in the direction of a wiring diagram?

Its a 1.4 16v 59 plate version.

Appreciate any help

Cheers

Mike

I do realise that this is unlikely but could the fog light be stuck in the on position?

Yes I do realise that the fog light are self cancelling when the lights are turned off then on again, when functioning correctly.

Just a thought.

good luck to ya  :goodjob: :goodjob: :goodjob:

You say you checked the bulb but have you also checked the other one?

Have you had either bulbs replaced recently?
If so then there could be a slight difference in manufacture material

Thanks for the quick replys so far.

Good point I'll try and swap the bulbs and see if it makes a difference.  I did wonderd if it was the fog lights but they have there own bulb and appear to work ok.  The bulb is a dual filament doing tail light and brake light.  With the head lights on the top element comes on very bright and you cannot see the brake light working although the filament does light up.

I hate vehicle electrickery

I have heard and seen people actually put them in the wrong way, lord knows how they do it,as a twin element globe usually has a offset locating pins, but Like I said I have seen it done.

I see this from time to time. very competent mechanics these days.....
just take the bulb out, rotate 180 degrees, and put back on.

Yep thought of that, although when I checked the bulb the bayonets are at different heights so can only go in one way.

Thanks

Might be a manufacturing fault then. If the problem switches to the other side when you swap them, I'd just buy another....
