Hi
Please help today (may have happened before but first time heard it ) I heard a weird whining noise from the engine area. I think its something to due with steering? As I was parking at the time, I have notices the noise kicks in when I start to drive off and steer then it dies down slightly. Bit worried what could it be? All fluid levels seem ok.

Don't think I know the answer but before someone else says it... Doesn't sound like the Mrs.. as she wouldn't be in the engine compartment... :whistler:
Edit: I wouldn't imagine it being the steering as it is electric/electronic on all i30's...

Damn, given the post was so new I thought I had a chance...... :Pout:
Don't worry Mentalboy, people who actually know what they are talking about will be around soon....
In the meantime you could assist by listing the distance travelled.

First thought is the generator belt with inadequate tension... ?

I think the alternator area would be a start. A slipping blet though I 'd expect a squeal. I'm thinking more to do with load and maybe bearings.
Whether that be internal, the one way pulley, or even idlers on the belts.
Does appear tyhe belt adjustment is manual, so proably a place to start.
More clues? Mileage?

So a coil spring?? Wow, if you've done a big mileage might be worth replacing the other three just in case they are corroded too...

I changed both front ones to be safe but not back ones.
