Title: i20 back windscreen shattered
Post by: hiAl on December 29, 2017, 18:15:58
I had been driving my 2017 i20 this afternoon for about 5mins when the back windscreen just shattered. The temperature outside was 0 degrees. There were no other cars near by so wondering if anyone was aware of a similar problem with rear windscreen's on i20's. Cheers

Can't commenmt except to say that I've read about exploding sunroofs in Veloster ended up be a recall. so I guess feasible there may be an issue. All I can thik about is with the cold the vehicle dimenssions may have altered enough to stress the glass and casue it to break? maybe incorrect fitment from new?

I'd contact Hyundai immediately and throw it on them. hard one to prove anyone with you at the time to back the story up?

Welcome hiAl

That’s a weird one. We don't have a lot of members with i20's come on here. We do however, have a good mix of Hyundai models including getz and accent as well as thousands of i30's of course. Can't recall one similar situation.  I'd be praying that Hyundai give you the benefit of the doubt under warranty. As Gerard says, difficult to prove it wasn't caused by a hit from something inside or outside the vehicle.  Not saying we don't believe you though.

Good luck with your negotiations.

How old is the car?

Any previous glass issues to other glass in the car?

Any indication that the glass may have been factured?

I had a rear window shatter on an Audi A4. The windscreen fitter explained that if there is water trapped in the rubber seal and freezes overnight - when you use the rear screen heater to defrost it the glass expands, has nowhere to go and shatters.

Since then I have never ever used the rear screen heater to clear ice from the window - I scrape it off.

I guess that could be the cause, but seems crazy you can't use the demister for what it is designed for.

Until I had garages I had to defrost frozen back windows quite often after -4 or -5 degree frosts (mainly in Launceston) without incident. I realise you guys get colder over there. Was yours replaced under warranty Alan?

In the early 2000's VAG had problems with shattered rear windows because the heating treads in the window was too close to the hole where the washer rod came through the window.

That's what we were told after having replaced quite a few rear windows under warranty but I've never heard about issues with shattered windows on a Hyundai.

As the i20 is a 2017 i would expect it to be a warranty job due to tensions in the glass, but don't be surprised if Hy think this is something you should address to your insurance.

I had to get it fixed whilst on holiday in the Scottish Highlands. I got it fixed via insurance (I may have paid an excess - can't recall).

I do remember the fitter told me that he replaced dozens of rear screens during the winter and only rarely any in the summer.  He also said that the screen heater is designed for demisting and not de-icing.

Thanks everyone for taking time to respond. Yes the i20 is still under warranty. The dealership are having a look at it today and I'll find out next week what they say. Got a nice i30 replacement car though.

@hiAl ; Did you have the rear screen heater on at the time. My rear screen also shattered about 5 minutes after driving off when I ran over a bumpy section of road. It shattered with an almighty bang - I thought for a second a car had rear ended me.
