When I drove a 5 speed box I never thought to see how many RPM it was pulling at 70mph/113kph, but I guess some may be interested in the figures for the 6 speed 1.6 CRDI Hatchback. At this speed in:
5th Gear - 2600RPM
6th Gear - 2200RPM
Give or take 50RPM.

At 70mph the petrol 1.6 is sitting at 3600, I kept looking for a 6th gear to start with :lol: :lol:

My 5-speed box shows 70mph at 2500rpm, but the GPS shows 67mph, which is probably right.
I'd love to reduce the revs to 2200 with that extra gear

sounds good, just what is the weight difference between a 5 speed and a 6 speed?, if weight is close and rev's drop 300, might see a small improvement in economy. the i.6 CRDi as it comes is a bit gutless at low rev's as another member mentioned. so they need the lower gears to mask this. hence the need for 6 speed is you want to drop the rev's for cruising but does not always equal lower fuel useage or faster speed, for speed you would also need to increase HP if there is no speed limiter. Razy that races his i30CRDi in WA mentioned that he put 15" wheels with low profile tyres to drop the gearing , as it made the car excelerate harder.
i would say if you geared a 5 speed taller to drop the revs in 5th it would turn car into a slug.

The box is a complete redesign with fewer parts. Some parts are now made from carbon. It's lighter than the 5 speed.
The ratios all seem pretty well spaced to me. It still has some pull in 6th, sometime I think I'm in fourth. There is an extra 5nm of torque in the new motor to help though.
The offical brief say the gearbox is responsible for a 1.5% saving in fuel . I haven't really done any mileage checks yet, will do soon.

This is the details from Hyundai Norway, when it was announced. Hyundai UK don't seem to publish press releases very often.
Six-Speed Manual Transmission
Carbon Multi-Cone Synchronizer Rings
The U2 is mated to a new manual transmission with a sixth gear which boosts fuel economy by an estimated 1.5 percent while the challenge of improvements to shift feeling and precision has been tackled through several measures.
First, multi-cone synchronizer rings were specified. By expanding the friction surface, synchronizing capacity is enlarged and shift effort is reduced. First and second gears feature triple cone synchronizer rings while double cone synchronizer rings are applied to the third through sixth gears. Also, the synchronizer rings (first/second) are made of carbon, a material used in clutch, brake and other demanding high-friction applications. The carbon synchronizer rings offer far superior durability compared to standard brass synchronizer rings.
Modulized Shift Control Assembly
The six-speed's shift control assembly has been totally redesigned into a modular unit resulting in more precise shift quality. As there are a fewer number of parts in the new design, the stack-up chain of parts is greatly reduced resulting in smaller tolerances and higher shift precision. The new module is lighter, simpler and requires less assembly time with reduced margin for error. Within the central control shaft, a new linear-type bearing is used in addition to a conventional rotational bearing to lower friction in the detent pin resulting in lighter and smoother feeling shifts.
Low Noise Gear Profile
The six-speed is also quieter. Using computer aided engineering tools, the profile of the gear teeth has been designed to be insensitive to gear teeth contact transmission error thus minimizing gear noise.

thanks Lorian, were is reverse gear located on your new 6 speed? like my five speed it is ...lift a ring under gear shift knob, then push to extream left & forward. how do you go about engaging reverse on the new 6 speed?
i wonder if we will ever have this gearbox offered in Australia.

Yes, lift ring and where you said. I believe this is the standard now in europe, although in our 2 year old Peugeot 207 you pull the stick and the gear is located where 6th would be on my box. I much prefer the "lift the ring".
I guess they will shift (!) to using the new box sometime during the year, as it's cheaper and quicker to build. The question will be if it's assembled in Ulsan or exported from the new gearbox plant they are building/about to build in Nošovice.
It's also worth noting the new gearbox and the U2 engine seem to go hand-in-hand, if you get one, you get the other., in eUK anyway.

i also read that Hyundai are going to make under car more aero dynamic & also inside wheel arch's, so sounds good, they also said they will fit economy shift up indicator light in dash like Ford have in the new Fiesta. i mentioned after i stest drove a fiesta that the shift light would be a good addition. along with low rolling resistance tyres. wonder what economy they are shooting for?
also the removal of airconditioning would save weight and save fuel too.

If you removed the driver in my case you would probably get another 30MPG. :lol: :lol:
Managed to get my 1st decent run out in mine at the weekend. I was most impressed. Back to the daily commute once more, so it will be interesting to see how the MPG adds up at the next fill.
When I parked up this evening I had covered 366 miles since friday night and had an indicated 162 left in the tank. To be perfectly honest, I haven't been to gentle on the loud pedal but I'm still quids in compared to the Late, lamented Volvo. I'm already about 45 miles infront with 162 miles spare and at 2/3rds the cost per tank full.
Do I sound pleased? I should bloomin' think so!!! 8)

I guess we found the same place but with my figuring I came to a slightly different conclusion when taking into account the final ratio(s). I have no idea how the box is made but there appears to be an extra intermediate gear interposed to provide effectively two final ratios with 1,2 and reverse on one and 3,4,5 and 6 on the other.

Where the percentages are the new box relative to the old and the 6th gear is relative to the old 5th gear to indicate the drop in revs expected when cruising - knocking off a useful 20%.

Other posts saying that only the fifth gear has been shortened along with of course a taller 6th is the correct information.

The drop in 5th in particular should allow this gear to be used around town at 60kmh/35mph whereas now it's just painfully close but can't quite make it. :'(

No spectacular hills to speak of. I travelled to the county of Norfolk in eastern England which, for the most part, is known for being flat as a lot of the land was originally reclaimed from the sea.
lots of very comfortable cruising between 80 - 90MPH. (not me officer) I wasn't trying to be economical. I was trying to make a fairly honest comparison with my old car, and, quite frankly, there isn't one!! 8)

I could only see the ratios for the 2.0Crdi 6 speed box - that's different to the 1.6's new box - did you use this or did you find the new specs somehwere on there?

Hi pip, i did not find the new ratio's, i just found a write up on the new 6 speed, all it said was what i wrote, they did not quote ratio's .

that's true pip, just now with the 5 speed, the fith gear is off the mainsharft, but 4th is on the mainsharft, so fourth is a stronger gear to use.
i would expect this new gearbox would have the fith on the mainsharft or are both fith and sixth overdrive gears? or is fith direct to the diff ratio?

Drove the 1.6CRDi 6 Speed last saturday on the new i30 edition as my mate wanted to buy one. Can't believe how refined it was. Still had a bit of pulling power in 6th which was unusual.

Hey Nick, sounds great m8, was just asking if you went up any hill's, as the little 1.6 CRDi can surprise you how well it can pull hill's, but here in Australia we can't have much fun at all, as maxium speed limit is about 70mph if you get caught going about 15mph over the max posted limit the can take your licence. but when i grew up, the most dangeriouse thing on the road was a new australian, mostly Greek or Italian, LOL the cops could not book you unless they could catch you, and they had to follow you for a few miles driving over the speed limit to confirm you were speeding.
was also a lot of dirt roads in sydney, all the drainage at side of roads were dirt and lots of cars got bogged down when it rained,was a bit wilder in those day.

Has anyone heard any more about a 6 speed for Australia?
I rang my local Hyundai dealer who had no info on this.
I am just about to order an SLX diesel but probably would feel like waiting a few months if I knew I would get a 6 speed.

Regarding the fact, that my i30 CRDi is originally 90-ps version one and is remapped (tuned) to 115 hp and approx 275Nm, I was just wondering, if "stock" 115-version is running at the same rpm, lower or even higher than mine at the same speed (let's say 140kph)?
I'm asking that, because you've written that the 5-speed you've driven is running on approx 2,600 rpm when going around 113 kph, while mine is going above 120 kph at those rpm... On this picture (http://www.shrani.si/f/1t/o9/z9RigeH/13022009162fe.jpg) you can see me going almost around 115-118 kph, when driving slightly below or almost exactly 2,500 rpm..
I know you've written give or take 50 rpm, so it's probably about the same, but just out of the curiosity..

Having just collected my new 6-speed CRDi I can agree with Lorian's observations. I also find that the new engine has a far better spread of torque. The torque on the previous engine (U1 ?) seemed to disappear below 1700RPM whereas the new one is still good at less than 1400RPM. The combination makes the car far easier to drive in heavy town traffic.

Must say that 6th gear is one step from heaven :mrgreen: considering that from 120kph every +25 on speed dial is like 0.8-1l more fuel consumption, driving it in 6th 160kph on highway makes it silent and still very economical glide.

Are these from the book? These ratios do not correspond to those I used in my post above to calculate % changes from original 5 speed, which I got from the webpage I referenced.
Can you also post the final gear ratios please? My reading of the webpage indicated there were two final ratios.

That was 6-speed manual.
For 5-speed all is the same, only fifth is different 0,505.

This was the RPM for 5th gear in my 6 speed box. I'd expect 5th to be slightly higher in the 5 speed box, as per postt #2.
I can't test at 140kph in the next few days as I have a roof rack and 3 bycles on the car for my next few hundered miles of runs. They will take off at this speed.

Just divide 2200(rpm) by 113(kmph) and then multiply by 140(kmph). Answer is 2726 rpm.

One thing to bear in mind is the built-in inaccuracy of the speedo when attempting to make these comparisons. I'd figure the speedo reads optimistically by 5% or so.
The only real way to compare is to express everything in terms of km/1000rpm (or some other base) by determining the (effective) circumference of the tyre and how many turns it makes from the known gear ratios in each gear. There was a time when mph/1000rpm was a standard specification for top gear for the very reason it's being asked here.
Of course another way is just use a GPS. Speedo and tacho is a very dodgy method.

My readings were taken while using GPS for speed and Scangauge for RPM.
My speedo is pretty accurate, only about 1mph below the GPS calulated speed at 70 mph. My old car was 3mph out.
