Title: Concert for three rattles, a jingle and a creak
Post by: babis_xo on January 21, 2010, 01:44:30
I intended to first write a short review of the car so far, which contains nothing but "good" things as the car is really good for its class. Finding a solution for the "bad" things, comes before though.
So, here we go:
I bought the car new on August 20th, 2009. For the first ~3000 kms (2000 on highways) my i30 was silent as a graveyard by night. Therefrom assuming that the car had no congenital issues.
After that, by the next 2000 kms (mostly in-town), a new creak or rattle comes to the spotlight every other week or so. Till now, i encountered most of the usual creaks and rattles, plus some uncommon ones. Most of them are slightly getting worst day by day :'(
I removed everything from the trunk and glovebox, and still getting (in order of first appearence):
- rattle from somewhere inside the driver's (left) door panel (goes off temporarily by lifting up/down the window several times).
- rattle from the dashboard in front of the driver at about 3000 Rpm, just like a flying bug lives in there (stops when pressed intensenly by hand on a specific place, but i can't drive by one hand).
- frightening  loud protracted creak rear-right of the car (hatch-door?), when the car steers 90° left or right with low speeds on surfaces of unequal height (say, when turning down /up to a garage-ramp). Occasionally, the same creak sounds just once when the right side of the car passes over short potholes or bumps).
- occasional rattle from the steering column(?), when steering with the car stopped, regardless of pressing the brake pedal or not. It's not the noise from the electric power steering motor, neither the same issue that Shambles had.
- jingle from inside the steering wheel hub ??? (what the ). I figured out the origin of the jingle, when i tapped the steering wheel ring with my finger. Stops when i put my hand on the hub (maybe i could use the horn all the time? :D)
Since i am familiar with almost all kinds of rattles (owner of a 12-year Toyota Corolla and former driver of a Fiat 128), i assume that none of the above mentioned is a major issue. Afterall, according to a greek proverb, "a dog that barks never bites".
A last note: The black i30 below is identical to mine except that is a Korean built (o.k., maybe it has six differences :D)  It has over 50.000 kms and no shock-absorbers changed, but still no rattles. Hmmm...
I hope that the Czech workers weren't very unhappy when they assempled mine (see: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eD7zDCS1_rU)

I'm sure others will have suggestions based their experience. My i30 is still new so has no noises (yet).

For the noise from the rear, The first and easy thing to do is to unscrew the rubber door bump stops a little and see if that makes any difference (you can just unscrew with you hand). My money would be on suspension noise though given when it happens. Maybe anti-roll bar bushes.

My car has now done 2,300 miles and has developed the same as above when going over speed bumps or hitting holes etc. A loud noticeable noise on front right hand side of car (Though this might be just cause that's where I sit!).

Anyone else had it/got it diagnosed?

Again it could be anti-roll bar bushes squeaking. A spot of silicon spray might help. Often if it is these buishes creaking then spraying some water on them will make the noise disappear for a day or two.

Not sure if this is a particular problem on the i30, but it does happen on loads of other cars, including my old one. I never noticed it with rubber bushes, seems to be a function of using plastic bushes and no lubricant.

Cheers for the advice. Not sure "squeeking" is really the right term as it is more akin to the noise of a seat belt hitting the plastic moulding around the seat (Though it isn't what's causing it I checked!)

Mine too, but seems that the roads here make the cars grow older a littlt bit sooner...

Nope, they were fully unscrewed already    But, i turned them the other way and now the hatch-door closes nicely :)   The noise is still there though...

Yes, same thing on a different spindle. At least that minimizes(?) the possibility of a loosen or damaged part because that would be such a coincidence!

True, a "squeeking" suspension is common among old cars but mine isn't...
And it doessn't really sounds as "squeeking". I hope you're right though, and i'll give it a try with some water spraying on...

My 3 month old Czech car rattles all over. Front left door buzzes, rattle in back left. Creak from glove box and a metal sound(knock) from front of car on certain road surfaces. All seem to be getting worse by the day

That's not good M8.. I get a buzz from around my glove box but that's about it...

Makes you wonder about the QC from the Euro factory doesn't it.

My 1.5 year old Korean has the glove box buzz and maybe the steering coupling (like Steves) but not enough to complain about yet (however will be an issue before 5 years :D)

I got rid of all my noises by turning the radio/CD/iPod or whatever up louder

On a serious note it is annoying and whenever I've had such a noise I can't rest until I found it.

Fortunately odd noises have been very few on my i30.

My i30 rear hatch rattle surfaced after driving the car 3 feet out of the dealers showroom. Took it to another  ( closer to home ) dealer to have its 1000k service performed and I was told that after many hours of their factory trained fingers massaging my car there was no more rattle.....but it's still there and louder than before.  Aarrghhh!

Very frustrating Jason..  Sorry to hear that  Hopefully you can find it yourself..It is usually something simple in that area..

Probably juvenility problems of the Czech assemply department...

There are a few variation in parts from one plant to the other, but QC in Nosovice plant is still done by Koreans. The reports of the odd rattle and squeak seem to be varied between cars made in both plants.

I don't like the plastic rivets they use in some places (like the wheel arch liners) they are prone to cause rattles.

Check the hatch bungs to ensure they are holding the hatch tight in place as it must be loose.

rattle from the dashboard in front of the driver at about 3000 Rpm, just like a flying bug lives in there (stops when pressed intensenly by hand on a specific place, but i can't drive by one hand).

this could be the same or similar to my creak (which i thought i had answered before actually - maybe not - anyway). i find it also disappears when hand is placed in certain spot.
i had it improved at my service when the dealer had the screw under the dash tightened. only thing that makes it disappear totally is to put a piece of hard foam between the door and dash when i close the door. works perfectly. i have a photo of exact spot but not on me (away from home currently - i can post it up next week if you like)

i also now have a creak/rattle on other side but haven't figured out where yet - could be dash or could be glove box.

sometimes get a vibration in the rear vision mirror as well

I had an intermittant "sizzle" that appeared to come from the (RHD) drivers window. Had me going for ages as no amount of pressure anywhere on the window or door made any impression. Turned out to be coming from the extra keys hanging from the ignition key key-ring. Facinating how the sound never came from that direction at all.

I've got the glove-box one now.

If you have you spare wheel nuts and alloy lock in the glovebox they rattle. I put a bit of foam in the box with mine and put them in one of the boot trays, with my spare net to stop the box banging.

I had a rattle in the back of the car somewhere.
All I could tell was that it was behind me somewhere.
Sometimes it was there, sometimes it wasn't.
As I don't drive it that often, I only looked for it every now and again...
Then over Christmas I was driving it daily and it sent me up the wall....
Sounded like something rattling around in one of the under floor storage boxes in the hatch.....
AAAARGGGGHHHH   I was going nuts.

I got in the back and told the Mrs to drive a bit harder than she normally does while I listened. I was going to find it one way or the other.

HA HA !!

After the rear seat belts have been used, if not released properly, the buckle clip rides up with the belt on retraction and sits on a plastic protector thingy near the top of the seat.  Drop the clip back to the stop on the belt... noise gone.

When it rattles now, I don't care!!!  Cause I know what it is !!! I just move the clip next time I stop (If I remember),

When fitting my scanguage I noticed there is a big open curved slot under the steering wheel that I thought looked like it would allow any in-dash noises out towards the driver.

I took about 6 inches of unused fire-resistant high density central heating pipe lagging (smallest bore) and bent into the slot. It fits perfectly, blocks the gap and actually looks better than having a hole there too.  The piece needs to be about 2 inches (5cm) longer than the slot.

I took the car to the local dealer. At first, he tighten up the car body (suspension, wishbones etc.). Then, after a long term test drive, we identified that:

- The noise from the rear right of the hatch, caused by something inside the trunk light hole. We pulled out the cap with the bulb and the wires and the noise stopped. Some rearrangement of the wires will do the job, i think.

- The screw of the rear left restraint system whas fully loose (though no rattles from there)

- The rattle from the steering wheel itself, was caused by its back side cheap plastic covers. We removed all parts, set them back and the noise has gone (not temporarily i hope!)

- The left screw under the driver visor panel was somehow loose (thanks snowcherry!)

Unfortunately, we didn't manage to hear the other rattles, as usually happens when you take the car to the mechanic... or maybe because it was raining.
They didn't charge me at all, and that's a big plus for Hyundai.

There are still some rattles which reappeared the other day.
So, i followed Shamples advice and recorded some sound clips (well, an entirely library) of the upsetting creaks from the steering (?) rack.

Have someone put a little pressure on the glove box lid, or open it temporarily while driving - it disappears when I do either.  A bit of grease behind the latch 'bolt' does the trick for a little while.

I have another rattle from the seat belt top shackle adjuster, right by my ear.  I have to drop it down one notch from the top to stop it, will mention it next service.  Also my vents creak when its been parked in the hot sun and the aircon fires up - but i think thats to be expected due to the material shrinking at uneven rate.  My car has done 40k now and it regularly goes onto unsealed and quite bumpy roads and is holding up really well.  Only problem is its constantly filthy and i'm not going to wash it every second day.

make sure you use grease that isnt going to make a mess.  Its probably not the best solution but it stopped me going nuts for a while.  Maybe a bit of foam jammed shut in the lid could also be a temporary fix until the next service?

I arranged an appointment with the dealer on Wednesday, two days from now.

After my last visit (10 days ago), i keep shooting videos demonstrating the various noises (steering wheel, rear right and door panel)... which are getting worse :'(.

Videos taken, are more than informative and i'm looking forward to upload them here, but i think that they are oversized (?) in MBs (50+)
Alternatively, i thought about uploading them on YouTube, but maybe this will consider as a detraction? (definately i'll do so if my dealer fails to deal with the issues).

What's your opinion m8s?

I was at my dealer just before 8.00 am. A guy tested the car 9.00 am and detected two of the three noises (steering wheel and rear back) but missed the one from driver's door panel. So far, so good.
After a kinder of "investigation" (about 5 mins!), he tried to send me away with the excuse of "nothing serious but ordinary plastic rattles, which are not under guarantee etc, etc"

I showed some of the videos on my cellphone and told him that i was going to upload everything  on Youtube, so at least i can get some help from others. By the fear of detraction, he called the manager and after a "thorough" investigation (another 3 mins) they decided that the "airbag's plastic ring" has to be replaced for causing the steering wheel rattle. So they ordered the part and finally, managed to send me away. As for the other issues, they promised that they will be checked "next time". The time was only 10.00 am...
I have that feeling of beeing a "Mr Bean", but i'm going to be patience till "next time" (at about 15 days, when the part shall come).
Till then, i attach some samples of reduced quality from the videos taken, hoping for any clues.

There is a known rattle on some models (rectified in recent production) in the steering wheel that can be caused by excessive clearance between the MDPS (power steering) motor and worm gear. probably worth them checking that too  :'(

Thanks Lorian,
my car produced on June '09 in Czech and i collected it on Aug. '09, so i'm "afraid" that is one of the recent production. I'll notify them (wrote down your post) but i don't know if they can understand what "MDPS" and "worm gear" is (neither do I ). A picture might help :)

The problem Lorian reported only seems to apply up to build date of April 2008 (that is VIN range "First production" to KMHDC51ER8U098836) according to the Tech Bulletin. Still worth them checking it though (the part is called a "flexible coupling") and yes, I've had mine replaced (twice).

Indeed. I wonder how the noise on his video compares to the noise you had though?

Seems more likely to be a motor related issue than the airbag conector ring to me.

yes, definitely not. Yours, felt like something was boiling inside.
Mine, feels more like something "winds up" and appears only when turning slowly or when manoeuvring for parking and sometimes when turning the wheel completely stoped. But it gets much more aggressive when turning left, on uneven roads. It isn't always noticeable though.

In the first clip, there is also a louder, recurring sound, which can be heard several times in between the "wind up" steering creaks. Appears also when turning slowly -and guess what- especially left, on uneven roads. Feels like something is hitting the sidewalls (like a "pendulum") and comes from the rear right of the boot. On the first visit to the dealer, we moved everything from the boot, re-assembled the shock abs. etc., but no luck.

As eye said, maybe i should only turn right :'(

Still i don't understand why at least they didn't deal with the "simple" creak which clearly comes from inside the driver's door panel (3rd clip). On second thought, i do understand why Hyundai offers only 3yrs of guarantee for Greece: probably they know what their dealers here are capable for...

well
it seems i have another vibration on top of the glove box....

i haven't actually greased the glove box yet (crappy month) but the last week or so the glovebox and the rear view mirror, my drivers side dash,  and this new rattle have all been going at once. not sure if its the wet weather or what making them go off. and i'm too busy to figure it out. just turn music up and sing loudly

its rather annoying though

I'm sure others will have suggestions based their experience. My i30 is still new so has no noises (yet).

For the noise from the rear, The first and easy thing to do is to unscrew the rubber door bump stops a little and see if that makes any difference (you can just unscrew with you hand). My money would be on suspension noise though given when it happens. Maybe anti-roll bar bushes.

Many thanks Zhangster. I hope it works.
I just called them and notified them about it. It makes sense, as i encountered a problem with the locking system from the very beginning (hatch was not closing easily and additionally the boot-light and the corresponding dash-indicator remained inactive sometimes when hatch was open). To correct these issues, i had to unscrew a bit the bumb-stops of the hatch. Maybe, as you said, i had to tighten the locker instead.

EDIT: Kia cerato is good, but i'm not 70yrs old yet... (Not ignoring J. M. Fangio, P. Newman and many others :))

I'm back since i had no PC for the past three weeks.

I got my car back at last, after 21/2 weeks.
They replaced the plastic airbag connector ring but, as Lorian predicted, the steering wheel noise is still there :'(

Apart from the above mentioned, the car is not as good as new but far... better! Almost any other noise has vanished, plus the car feels way better and solid. Also, the steering-wheel is heavier now, but no problem with that.

Feels like they re-assembled and greased the whole car and probably they've done a better job than the dedicated robots of the factory.

Well, as it usually happens with all hand-assembled cars (like Ferrari's, my i30 etc.), none of them is perfect  In my case, they forgot to put back some parts (the small absorber which keeps the glovebox in place and a plastic cap on the hatch-door) but no big deal actually.

Last but not least: they ordered a new set of the rear springs, as they've found mine were 1,5 cm shorter than the proper length!?!?!?

as expected the service guys did not hear a single creak or vibration at my service yesterday - i had 4 on the list.

when i asked on speed they explained they do a certain route of up to 80km's. riiightio. how frustrating.

You should insist on that.
Several years ago my corolla developped a vibration from right front, when above 120 km/h. They couldn't detect it and the excuse was the same as yours. As it came up a couple of years later, the right axle was totally askew.
Of course that's not your kind of problem but hey, some issues may show up above 80 km/h...

As for the persistent creaks of the steering wheel, my dealer ordered a replacement for the steering wheel column. Am i supposed to be happy now?

well i think i'm going slowly nuts with the two main creaks (either end of the dash) and having no music to cover them over currently. i wanted to drive up into town today to do some shopping but decided against it solely because i knew i couldn't handle two hours of creaks and no music.

i'm ready to pull into hyundai and throw the keys at them
i love my car but i hate creaks

You need to find someone good at locating noises. I'd offer my services but it's a bit of a trip  :D

Noises in cars rarely seem to come from the direction you think. One thing I've notice on mine is if the passengers seatbelt is not quite straight after someone gets out then that can vibrate slightly, but it sounds like it's coming from the glovebox area when you are driving.

My friends from WA have come to Tassie for a couple of weeks and got an i30 SX 2.0 Petrol Auto as a renter...

They have a 5 y/o Camry as their regular car and find the i30 a bit low rent and noisy with rattles and tyre noise..

I took it for a short spin (my first drive of any petrol i30) It went better than I expected for an auto  :D

The SX does seem to have more road noise than my SLX .. didn't hear any rattles but only a short drive..

The back seatbelts can also rattle is not tidied up when passengers get out

(You sound desperate so) maybe you should do that.
After all, they need time to track down the source(s) of creaks.

Notice that in my case it took them about 2 and a half weeks :'( but finally dealed effectively with most of them :)

Otherwise, there is an alternative here:

hahaha that should solve both problems in one go!
i get my new stereo next tuesday so i'm going to ask to take someone for a test drive that day if possible. otherwise i'm not sure what to do as i need the car for work and they don't seem to give borrow cars at my hyundai - at least they never do for services. my work and home are fairly long travels so can't rely on public transport in the meantime.

hmmm i think my left one may sound somewhat similar to that at the high speeds, and it gets worse the bumper the road is. my right one doesn't quite sound like that - at least not sitting right next to it at least. i reduce it by putting a piece of foam between the door and the dash, it sounds more like a creak than a rattle.

so you say it was definantly the door panel? do you know what they did to find it?
Title: Re: Concert for three rattles, a jingle and a creak
Post by: babis_xo on May 31, 2010, 12:42:25
I was so happy, so i forgot to ask them :-[
They just told me that various parts were disassempled and lubricated /greased.
A couple of days after picking my car, i noticed liquid black stains dropping out of the small drains of the door. So probably they just lubricated things...

Now it's the right panel's turn to rattle (exactly the same noise), so i shall ask them next time.

Anyway, if the noise reduces with a piece of foam, then it should stop /reduce when you put your hand on the door panel or on the dashboard. If you're able to find the right spot, then you probably found the source of the "evil"

From the moment I picked up my i30 there was a rattle in the rear which I thought was the rear hatch. I've asked to have it investigated and repaired during previous visits to my service agents but they've been unable to find the problem. I went back last week to complain again and without even road-testing the car the service advisor commented the i30's suffer badly from rear shock absorber failure and he would order a set in for my car. Two days later and the shocks have been fitted and the rattle is gone...yay!
Now if only they could fix the rattle in the door, steering column, glovebox etc etc .

Shock absorber failure sounds a bit dramatic, for those who haven't seen the other thread on this the shocks are fine, it's just a 2 cent plastic cover over the top that comes loose. It's annoying but not a safety issue IMHO.

bliss bliss bliss

for my latest service i took a hyundai gentleman for a test drive.
the left hand creak/vibration didn't make a single peep (grrr) but my right hand one vibrated away the whole drive. i showed him how i would shut it up etc.
he was an 'older' guy as opposed to some of the young trainees etc, and seemed to be much more genuinely interested in getting to the bottom of it.

he asked me to book it in for a whole day with him after it's service, and getting it back yesterday - OMG there's NO CREAK!!!! i was so happy i could almost swear undying devotion to him.  :D

he found it somewhere in the foot well area under the dash i think he said, but close to the door panel. he also said if i have any more creaks (e.g the left side) just bring it back to him.

Older guys care & are more patient, its a lesson learned from life.  :D

Personally I've found & fixed more rattles in my current Fiat than I care to think about... get the i30 on Sat Sept 4th! So no great worries, new turf to play on. I found the plastic inner wheel arch liners came loose frequently on the Fiat... fixed on with nasty plastic nuts... got rid of those by substitution with small nylock nuts with washers & a lot of odd noises simply went away, am I right thinking Hy use a similar plastic fixing nut....?

while i'm here...
even though the left side rattle was not 'fixed' by my dealer as it was absent on the day, it has been absent ever since [knock on wood].

I strongly recommend that you download the three *.wmv video files (posts #35 & 36), as they are clearly demonstrating conditions when rattles occuring.

Windows Media Player shows an error message when trying to open these files, so you'll have to install codecs for *.wmv (Windows Media Video) playback. You can pick your own codecs from web or simply download FFdshow codecs from here (http://sourceforge.net/projects/ffdshow-tryout/)
(IMO, it's more convenient than the K-lite codec pack).
Also, you'll be able to playback Xvid, DivX, H.264, mpeg-4 etc. on your PC

If you insist, further down are the *.wma -audio only- files
(audacity wouldn't convert them to another format, due to patent issues of the *.wmv files and blah blah blah...) but i'm afraid you will need codecs too...

I hope that you spot your rattle ASAP!
