Title: Knocking
Post by: PeeJay36 on January 30, 2010, 11:04:49
I have developed a knocking/clunking noise from the  rear of the car,not all the time, only over bumps and holes.I have cleared the boot, taken out the spare locking wheel nut box and checked the spare and ensured the jack is secure... any ideas?. I have a european built i30. Thanks in advance.

Would it be possible to ask a passenger to sit in the rear while you drive, to confirm it's the nearside rear? Quite often I've noticed small squeaks and I've thought they come from one place when in fact they originated elsewhere in the cabin

Thanks, thats a good idea as I have convinced myself its from the left rear, my missus says I am so deaf its probably from the from the front  right!

If it's actually an offside issue, we'd then be looking at the couplings around the exhaust area

could be a faulty shock absorber  but you have a 5 year warranty.take it to the dealers.

beginning to feel that I am being a right pain in the Rs with my dealer, already dropped it back this week as the front passenger carpet kept coming out from under the centre consul every time someone gets out of the car. Cant do anything with the carpet unfortunately, its cut too short.

weve had 7 or 8 little problems with our 2 i30s and each time we take the cw or the hatch in to have the problem looked at were in and out with the issue fixed.  take it back.

Hey don't worry PJ. It's sure inconvenient I know, but as above you're not on your own and the dealership will sort out any problems.

I've had: new offside rear seatbelt; full replacement alloy inserts; replacement steering coupling (twice); new rear window washer pump (twice) and a couple of niggly things that I fixed myself

I have always had niggles with new cars, so expect it really. When the new promo starts in March (its called many happy returns I think) I will be changing to a new i30 to give it another go. It could be a first build at the new factory. Going for a diesel if the price is right.

No probs PUFC GUY, I will be happy to let you know. I have double checked all doors/hatch are shut and nothing is loose in the car. Also have driven over speed bumps and holes with one side only going over each time... the right hand side is silent, the left clunks, no doubt about it.

Thanks shambles, tried that already, the spare is well attached, I am trying to attach pictures to show the amount of rust on the suspension parts (as well as paint shade differences ) to get some forum opinions, as I believe its a little excessive for a mostly dry driven 6 month old car.I could be wrong.

I've had knocking at the rear and front for about a month now   I didn't manage to take it to my service. It's like you've said..when you go over bumbs, holes and bad roads..

I'm pretty sure we both have problems with so called "stabilizer" - I had that issue on Hyundai Accent twice till 60.000 kms. It's nothing to worry about, they change it under warranty in max 30 min's

I am trying to attach pictures to show the amount of rust on the suspension parts (as well as paint shade differences )

I have noticed on other newish cars that some of the suspension parts seem to rust quite quickly, seems that the paint they are coated with from new, aint designed to last.

What paint shade differences are you referring to, is it the underseal

It's been the same on every car I've ever owned, surface rust is not really anything to be concerned with. While I was sealing my calipers I noted that some milled sections on the suspension are not painted at all. I sealed them, but only because I had a can of enamel paint sat by me at the time.  99.99% of owners wouldn't even notice, and I doubt it will make any difference to the longevity of the part.

Will be interesting to see the pics.

I had a knock in the rear left occasionally over bumps, turned out to be the towbar moving in its 'slot'.  If you have a towbar, try removing the 'tongue' or removing the safety shackles - just a thought, took me a while to work it out - could have sworn it was a suspension problem but it wasnt!

Good tip LD (and if it is that it only takes a thin sliver of plastic such as the hook from a plastic pen top to stop the rattle...)

Have you ever checked the rear shocks ?

They have a protection device to keep dust and debris away. On my car one of them has come loose, resulting in the same noise you describe:

This is how it should look:
http://www.hyundaiboard.de/attachment.php?attachmentid=979 (http://www.hyundaiboard.de/attachment.php?attachmentid=979)

And this is what it looks when its broken:
http://www.hyundaiboard.de/attachment.php?attachmentid=980 (http://www.hyundaiboard.de/attachment.php?attachmentid=980)

You can see them when you take a look just above the rear tire. This issue happens a lot right now in Germany. Seems to be caused by a very hard winter this year.

Hi wendel, thanks for the heads up and pictures.I still await a call to say my car is ready so I may call them to tell them of your findings. If shocks are failing in Germany with the quality of roads you have there, they stand no chance here in the u.k!

That pic just shows a thin plastic boot around the shock, it doesn't show a broken shock. You can just push that boot back up in to place.

Interesting. On mine they push up and click in to place. have you tried using a small brush to clean up into the hole?
Title: Re: Knocking
Post by: Wendel on February 22, 2010, 08:35:25
Hi all

I also tried to push those Rubber things up. Depending on sand/debris in the seat they click on or they don´t.
But this is a more temporary fix. They tend to fall off again.

Here in Germany Hyundai dealers have 2 different ways to repair:

As long as the rubber tubings are OK ( not cracked or bent ) they glue them back in place using a 2component glue.

When the tubings are damaged they are exchanged.

I´ll know what my dealer is going to do when I take the car in next week.

In Poland, problem with loose rubber tubing (inside the corrugated tubing is rubber shock absorber)  in rear and front shock absorber is very popular and occur only Czech made I30.  Polish dalers have the same  ways to repair like described Wendel. On my car all 4 tubings has come loose. Front loose plastic corrugated tubing you can see after jack up, because car is down, the tubing will be crushed.

Post by: Lorian on March 11, 2010, 22:09:20
I noticed one of my rear dust tubes had fallen down on its own today. Not knocking, but I've pushed it up for now. It does seem loose compared to when i had the wheels off in January. Its a long time to first service, so I will just re-inforce the connections with black duct tape when I get a moment.
Title: Re: Knocking
Post by: PeeJay36 on March 12, 2010, 20:28:25
front and rear tubes knocking now, I dont think the Czech i30 is as robust as the Korean ones. Only my humble opinion though  :)
Title: Re: Knocking
Post by: Lorian on March 12, 2010, 21:49:26
Well the plastic tubes aren't the same. it seems they made a slight mistake in the part, but the dealer should replace them under warranty OK. The replacement tubes currently come from Korea.

There aren't many differences between Korean and Czech i30's. Apart from the obvious small cosmetic changes, and the 1.6CRDi/U2 these tubes are different, the tyres, windscreen glass, the clutch plates, probably a few other bits here and there.

Post by: PeeJay36 on March 12, 2010, 23:07:50
Hi Lorian, I am booked in to have these plastic bits changed, along with some other work, the parts are on back order and I have already waited weeks. The small differences between country of origin are no problem really. I wasnt in a rush to start with to get them replaced but the noise is begining to grate a little.

I dont recall if it wa back or front for you, but you can tape the rears as a temporary measure quite easily without taking the wheels off.

Hi Lorian, thanks for the top tip, I will try to use some of my duct tape to try this temp fix on the back and front. I have plenty of time as I have to wait for the RAC, I was popping up to the sisters this morning to help her move in....... the little b%*@#r wont start!!!!!!!!!!!!

Hi, it was just turning over not firing. The rac guys are tops, really had a good look and checked as much as possible, just couldnt find  anything obvious. He finally got it started after nearly flattening the battery and then putting it on a booster thing. My local dealer only sells on a Saturday so I will book it in on Monday. Although the last time they couldnt find anything in a diagnostic check.

Post by: eye30 on March 13, 2010, 16:01:14

PeeJay 36. Does it start from off now?

or have you left it running until Monday

If yes, then a similar thing happened when I had my Accent.

Eventually got it started and when it was checked over at the HY garage it was a sensor causing an intermittent fault.

Hopefully yours is something similar and can be sorted ASAP.

Title: Re: Knocking
Post by: PeeJay36 on March 13, 2010, 16:41:11
Hi eye30,
it has started at least half a dozen times since the RAC guy left this morning. It has done this once before, unfortunately no fault was found when the garage completed a full diagnostic check. I have spent sometime this afternoon enquiring about its part exchange value as it may be time to move on, with the list of things it has to go back in to be put right, and with these starting problems I am not very comfortable now. I would have changed to a diesel in the happy returns deal but the cost of upgrading was far too much. Its a shame as the car has many good points as I have pointed out earlier, but I now must agree with my brother in law, the 1.4 (which on paper should be very good) is a bit of a let down.
Title: Re: Knocking

If you are not getting much joy with your current garage try another if one is within easy travelling distance.

Title: Re: Knocking
Post by: PeeJay36 on March 14, 2010, 11:12:55
I will stick with my garage as I am some distance from another. It must be hard for them as until something actually fails faults can be difficult to find. It has stopped us from our usual trip to europe in May, but I suppose with having to find the extra cash if its to be replaced would stop the trip anyway.

Well to throw my hat into the ring, I've been experiencing the same knocking noise, went and examined my rear shocks and surprise surprise both my plastic covers are loose. One will not stay up the other is a little better but neither will go back in as they should. Will speak to my garage tomorrow and get her booked in, though I'm not happy on a 4 month old car to have to drive the 40 mile round journey and take a day off work to allow them to fix their (Hyundai's not dealers) mistake.
Title: Re: Knocking
Post by: PeeJay36 on March 14, 2010, 20:11:32
Hello PUFC guy, I am afraid you may have to wait weeks for them (hopefully not) as I already have (the parts werent in the country). You get the feeling Hyundai have dropped the ball a little when moving to another factory (quite easy to do) and maybe cut quality to keep competative. I wrote notes on all the cars I test drove last June (sad or what!). I test drove a korean built i30, although I could be mistaken, as I put a note down about the dash top storage lid being damaged an would not shut properly. I dont think the euro built cars have these. It didnt seem as noisey (both engine and road noise).
On one of my trips back to have issues sorted I loaned a Korean built 1.6 diesel for a couple of days,it may have been my imagination as I was becoming a little fed up at the time, but it felt almost like a different car.
Title: Re: Knocking
Post by: Lorian on March 14, 2010, 22:05:09
The new Czech built diesel is a little quieter engine than the Korean version. I know it sounds counter-intuitive but you are going to find the diesel quiet (when warm) compared to the petrol, because it will be turning in the order of only half the revs compared to the 1.4 petrol for a given speed.

I guess the european sachs factory will have to start shipping modified parts soon.

What happened with your bumpers in the end, have you agreed to the respray?
Title: Re: Knocking
Post by: PeeJay36 on March 15, 2010, 18:58:34
Hi, If the Czech built diesel is quieter than the one I drove thats mighty impressive, as at the time I was running 2 diesels and the i30 motor was in a different league, and they were not that old either. re the bumpers, still not sure what to do, I have had some p/x quotes this weekend but all based on phone calls so no one has seen the car in the flesh yet. It may hit the p/x value so may have to be done (I would be the right thing to do... wouldnt feel right leaving it for a new owner to deal with)

Hi.

I had knocking on the front left and dealership replaced new shocker, then knocking from front right and the dealer replaced other front shocker.
For the last six weeks ive also had knocking from the rear left and after many trips to the dealer they have diagnosed that both rear shockers need replacing and are on back order. My car is a (09) 2009 1.4 comfort with only 11.450miles on the clock. Dealer ok but i need to travel to get to their workshop, knocking noise more persistant after the car has been standing for a few hours.

Regards.

Not good if this is happening after 11K.

At least the dealer is sorting it out for you so full credit to them.

Given the inconvenience, ask if they can get some compo from Hy but if not ask for a free or reduced service price

ps welcome

"Given the inconvenience, ask if they can get some compo from Hy but if not ask for a free or reduced service price".

To be honest ive never thought of contacting customer service, plus ive had previous dealings with the service manager and sales manager (at other dealerships where they have both worked) and got more chance of getting blood out of a stone. Probably because there both from Sunderland.! ha

As I have stated before, I don't think our Europe built i30s are quite as robust as the Korean ones. As for the 2010 models, all the nice little touches seem to have been removed, making the car seem ordinary where they once stood out. Which is daft considering how competitive the UK car market is. I test drove a Skoda Yeti yesterday (they only had a 1.2 s in, so that's what I drove) its list price is roughly equal to a comfort model, the car was very, very good. The warranty not so. Surprisingly the tiny engine was superb. My point is that Hy should look carefully at quality, there are others out there moving the goalposts all the time. Even the ix35, a great looking car, was beaten in a road test by the yeti and ancient Qasqui. (The road test was the reason I tried the yeti)

Hi all. I am from Russia.
Here we are experiencing same problems of knocking and loosing dust caps. Local dilers suggest fixing dust caps with glue, but it seems to be a temporary solutions. As a result of non-proper quality some russian i30 owners have "leaking" shock absorbers this spring.

We sent a collective letter to Hy HQ in Korea re loosing dust caps and shock absorber bumpers, and expect answer in a few days

Hi. Just a update on the knocking noise from my suspension.

Ive just had my two rear shocks replaced on Wednesday. Thats in addition to the two front shockers that were replaced a couple of months ago, so a full set of four under warranty on my (2009) I30. Hopefully i wont be having to go back to the dealers in a hurry again, as the comments of the service manager were "a full set of shockers on a ten month old car isnt that unusual", "dont worry you've another four years or warranty remaining" and "they dont make cars like they used too"...!

But on a lighter note, the knocking had stopped........................for now.!

Well, after a couple of months free from knocking the noise has re-emerged. Just visited dealer and after a test drive by the mechanic (sorry i mean technician) he diagnosed my car now needs a pair of bump stops replacing on the suspension. Hopefully it will sort this once and for all.!
