Title: Seatbelt fully stuck. It won't pull nor retract
Post by: billy638 on September 28, 2018, 21:41:17
Hi guys, today I reversed into a pole badly. The rear of the car was damaged. But airbag didn't come out. Neither the seats or anything else get badly damage. Just the bumper.

However, all the seatbelts fully locked up.
You can see a video of me trying to pull it. There is no leverage. It's fully retracted.

Is there a solution to this please?

Many thanks

If the car has pre-tensioners on the seat belts and they've fired it might cost a bob or two....  Others around here are smarter than I, so see what they have to say

Would appear that way. Likelihood of all belts seizing at the same time due to fault , zero.

May be worth an insurance claim, cheapest option likely be a wrecker

Hi Billy,

Jeepers! That is a right pain. Lucky the airbags didn't go off as well but being a reverse hit I can sort of understand why they didn't.

Like others have said, I doubt there is an easy fix. Even if you can free them up somehow you may not be able to trust their future safe operation.  :undecided:

If the pretensioners have blown then it's an all-round replacement jobby.

I thought they only fired on a forwards collision though  :Dunno:

It was not your fault  -  The pole moved behind your car on purpose as your reversed and didn't move out of the way.

While a rear hit will set off different bags and belts to a front hit, I too am quite surprised that all belts have fired.

Obviously, he needs new ones and possibly the airbag module.  :undecided: but Billy's notion that its just a damaged bumper is unlikely. I would suggest he has more than a little structural damage  and he should get a professional to look the car over.

How fast were you going to cause belts to lock up?

At least it wasn't a garage door at low speed....

Those things really stuff things up.....

This has been troubling me for days! Does the electronic speedo work in reverse. I seem to remember that when I was a young idiot, I Knew that the cable driven speedo stayed on 0.

Yesterday, To put the minds of certain older idiots at rest, I drove backwards down my driveway and reached 35 kph.

No , sorry I did not hit anything....this time.  :victory:

Thanks for that re speedo- now everyone will be out testing to see if theirs does it
Do remember taking a day off school to wind my dad's motorcycle speedo backwards.
After a couple of hours spinning the wheel,  I  disconnected cable and used a hand drill.

Did he give you a cut of the inflated sale price?  :agoodjob:

How about a competition to see who can beat 35 kph backwards?

I would have to double up on my meds before trying that!  :crazy1:

With my luck lately I think I might pass!  :sweating:
