Title: Centre blanking plate on newer models
Post by: angoraki on February 22, 2010, 17:08:38
Has anybody yet found out how the blanking plate is fitted? (Where the top storage bin was on previous models).  Am hoping to use the space, but can't figure out how it's been fitted.  It doesn't seem to be clipped in, but daren't put too much pressure on it. Hopefully it is possible to get hold of a top storage bin from somewhere.

I think hipposniper was going to ask his dealer about that. Dunno what the outcome was...

Yes, its fitted with about 8 screws that can only be removed via removing the whole of the centre unit. WHY

I will try and find a photo and post it.

As Lorian says - that sucks! - was hoping for an easy solution.  At least Hyunadi can't be accused of shoddy workmanship! - ............. I suppose the centre unit is held in with screws that you can only access by removing the dashboard unit lol

I wanted to put one of those centre cubby boxes in there to mount my gps. But I believe you have to remove the little box at the bottom of the centre console (2 screws), then use a special tool to pull the console out beginning at the bottom sides and working up to the top.  I think the heater controls etc come away with the centre console (after unplugging them), but the radio stays in place and is removed after if needed.  You can see a couple of the push clips in that photo (one each side - with the white nylon covers). The special tool only helps to prevent damage marks to the console when removing it.  But I am not brave enough to try and see if I can remove it

Please do not try to remove it unless you have confirmation from a dealer that it does infact come away as I have said. I will not be held responsible for any damage you do. You do it at your own risk.

On my cubbied-up version there is a screw to remove once the cubby is out. After that it is simply a case of carefully defeating the push-in clips to pull the cage out. I've had mine out 3 times now and no problems whatsoever.

Note that it seems the blanking plate cage seems to have two black locating dowels (at the top of the picture) which seems to suggest it has to be pulled straight forwards and not at any kind of angle.

I think one of you should definitely give it a go (and take pics) :)

If you look carefully you will see that there are 6 locating dowels in the picture. That's why you start at the bottom each side, so that the when you get to the top 6 the console lifts upwards to release those last dowels.

Come on someone, give it a go. Only about £200 if you get it all wrong

Well done  :D   I may try to remove mine when I fit my bluetooth unit.

I will also see if I can get a new centre console with the top cubby box (so I can fit my sat nav into it).

Hi angoraki

I was wanting to do the full sat/nav/radio/dvd thing, then when i lost my nerve due to some uncertainties.  I thought I would use the cubby to accommodate the portable sat nav.  Like you, I found that I don't have a cubby

I had read about the bean bags which are used to keep the sat nav located on the front fascia, I was VERY sceptical that this would work feeling certain that the weight of my portable sat nav (a GO910) would have it sliding about the windscreen area.

Notwithstanding this I took a risk and bought one, and it works fine.  I have only had it a couple of days but I have done one pretty long journey and the sat nav just sat there without the least hint of movement.

I am now pretty satisfied because I don't have the tell tale sucker ring on the windscreen which might attract the local 'brain dead' to smash the winders to search the glove box for a  sat nav (touching wood as I speak).  I don't leave it in the car EVER.

In case you're a rally driver cornering a 90, they include a sticky backed hook as a back up, I have not felt the need to use this device since the bean bag is very heavy and has a non slip backing with keeps it steady where you have placed it.

I hope this gives you other options.   I defo wouldn't be brave (foolish) enough to start stripping down my shiny new car.

Good luck with it all
Asa

Hi Asa - I wasn't sure about the bean bags, so I did the following:  remove the ashtray insert and cut a hole in the ridged part.  I removed the sucker and part of the stem from the satnav holder, and glued this into the hole in the ashtray.  This works well and takes seconds to remove when leaving the car.

Hi Richard and welcome,

There are threads on here on how to remove the blanking plate but not aware of anyone getting a cubby hole to replace it with. (My best bet would be to try the dealer as earlier European i30's had this compartment they may be able to order one for you.

In Australia all our i30's are Korean made which means we don't get the new 6speed manual yet but we all get a cubby hole as standard.
