Hi i30ers,
One thing I noticed is the mounting locations of the gas struts on the rear hatch,they are mounted with the rod shaft in the verticial position.
We fit lots of struts in Engineering appliciations in the Aust. food industry,an the strut suppliers instruct us to mount them with rod (shiny bit)
in the lower position because the cylinder can't lubriciate the rod upside down.May be Hyuandi use a special type of strut??The i30 is
a ripper to drive 2000kl on her now could'nt be happier.

I noticed they were very dry and not too smooth the first time I opened the hatch after buying the car - I was looking for a rattle (caused by the bump stops being too low).
I lubricated the bars with a little dry silicon lube (£1 from Lidl if you are in the UK)
I also greased all the door hinges and strikers, which often seems not to be done on new cars nowadays.

I also have an 85 ford laser & the struts are the same way.... & If i remember rightly my bonnet struts on my Commodore were also the same way....
Is It possible that its just the companys preferd way of doing it?

I was fiddling about in the boot today, and remembered this thread so had a look at things.
I think the strut is the right way roundfor the application, when the hatch is closed the gas end of the strut is pointing down which gets the initial movement of the strut bar to be with gravity and therefore allows the movement to be more fluid. Secondly if the bar was the other way around the small amount of lube that is in there would all drain away from where it is required, with the strut the way it is, the lube is always working on the rod.
The only negative of the strut being mounted this way is that the rod does not have to push through the oil at the end of the stroke which reduces the damping effect built into gas struts which are usually as Dibbo says mounted the other way.
The flip side may be that these struts are the type which have the additional reservoir for damping, however this is not an economy type of strut and so I would be surprised (but not shocked :razz:) to find them fitted to the i30.
