Title: Strange Noise
Post by: lvarella on March 11, 2010, 14:55:47
Hi,

I don't know if I'm crazy or not, but I'm hearing a different noise on my i30 engine during the startup in the morning. The noise is a tec! tec! tec!

I am wondering if it could be the Hydraulic Tappet (is that the right term?).

My i30 is a 2.0 petrol

What do you say?

Hi Luiz. Does it disappear when the engine has warmed up?

It did sound like a tappet to me. How's your oil level?
Title: Re: Strange Noise
Post by: lvarella on March 11, 2010, 16:31:58
Hi,

When it's warmed up the noise is very low, but I can still hear it there.

The oil level is fine, the weird thing is that  the noise appeared after the 2.500km revision.

I left my car at Hyundai, they said tomorrow I'll have an answer about it.

Good luck. Doesn't sound too serious to me but it's better to let the experts check it out.

Is the "revision" some kind of intermediate service?
Title: Re: Strange Noise
Post by: lvarella on March 11, 2010, 16:50:16
Thank you.

It was the first "revision", they changed the oil and filter.

I think "revision" is not the right term to it.

I think you mean 1st Service.

Take it back and tell them it only made this noise since the service, see what they say. Defintely get it checked out.

Good advice, agreed, but I think he's already alerted them...

Thanks, "1st service" was what I wanted to say.

I told them about the noise appearing after the 1st service, but I think I need to enforce that to them, but I need to be careful too, if they think I am complaining about their service on my car maybe I won't have my car fixed correctly, they are very sensitive.

It sounds to me like the Hydraulic Tappets and it could be that the oil they used when changed, is of a higher viscosity (thicker).

Also, why did you need an oil and filter change at 2500Km
Title: Re: Strange Noise
Post by: Lorian on March 11, 2010, 19:39:10
They do in some markets, presumably the conditions are harsh enough in Rio to require it. I must go there and find out.

My brother in law had a 1.4 like me, both have this rattle, both been back several times.

That's my suspicion, but I can't prove it. Maybe they will change the oil again and tomorrow show me the car without any noise.

They said me, due to the long trip, long time idle, they need to do the oil and filter change, but I think they want my money.

I just came back from the dealer.

They said that the tappet is really producing a noise, they tried to convince me that the noise would disappear in the future, but I didn't like it and they contacted Hyundai and they will know what they should do about it when Hyundai answer it.

We listened to other i30 there and none of them had this issue, just mine.

Let's see how long I will wait for it. I have the car now, they said that there is no problem to use it.

No problem, I was worried that I could have offended who was reading my post. If that's not the case, that's fine.

It's remind me an episode in NY.

I was looking for a NY Cap, but I want it with elastic in the back so it could fix better in my head. The problem was that on every store I was asking for a Cap with Rubber to fix better in my head and everytime I asked it people laughed, got embarrassed and I was not able to find the Cap.

When I got back at my friend's home (american) I told him I was having a hard time to find this Cap and he laughed a lot and explained that I was asking for a Cap with a Condom = (Rubber) in the back.

I was so embarrassed, all that people thought that I was crazy.

I just came back from the Dealer.

I am disappointed, he said that they couldn't find anything, the noise is there and Hyundai doesn't know what it can be that I should not worry because I have 5 years of warranty and if something gets wrong or broke they will fix it.

I'll take my car to another Dealer.

Very sad news  :'(

Untidy - or whatever - tappets should be fixable on the spot.

Yeah, you go to another dealer mate. At least they got the bit about the warranty right...

Is that Hy HQ or their Hy chap in the garage. The one with the spanner and hammer and a bit of grease on his face:lol:?

I'd contact HY HQ and ask if this has been logged and what they intend to do about it.

Also, will they pick up the tab if you breakdown at some unearthly hour and you have to incur costs etc etc

Doesn't instil confidence.

The Dealer said that was Hy HQ answer to my problem. The problem here is that Hyundai is represented by another group and they are making mistakes and Hyundai will pay the price in the future because of it.

I'll take to another dealer, I have the feeling that they didn't give their best.

hi again m8

i just watched ur clip... and as an old mechanic it dosent sounds like broken/uneven ajusted Tappets.....

to me it sounds like a heat protection shield on the exhaust manifold or at the exhaust pipe it self... likes it not secured probably.

if thats not the case its could some engine berings or waterpump housing wheel.. or just a broken belt ajustment wheel

Hummmm

When I get the car to another Dealer I will tell them about it. I'll try to record a new video, because the noise is louder when I accelerate it, maybe the vibration is causing this on something not secured properly.

how many kms is it until your next service,I'm thinking the oil isn't up to the job,as I've found that to be the case in my cars and the father in laws 2009 elantra [same engine as 2.0 petrol i30] and his car has only done 2,000 kms and it rattles also on cold start up.[30-45 seconds] the oil may be the culprit.

I took my car to another dealer yesterday, he just called me saying that he was able to hear the noise but they can't identify where is it, they will do a lot of tests in my car today and want me to go there in the morning to listening the noise. I don't wanna go there to listening the noise I want a solution.

Am I the mechanic or they?

As has already been said here, oil would be a high suspect but it hasn't yet been identified. However, because it's obvious I guess the dealer has eliminated that as the cause.

Just the same, can you tell us what they used?
Title: Re: Strange Noise
Post by: PeeJay36 on April 15, 2010, 18:45:51
I know its not the same engine, but I ( and other owners including my brother) have a tapping noise on my 1.4 its annoying and sometimes difficult (?) to repeat to dealers. The car sounds far too mechanical to me for a modern car, and is (IMHO) under powered. It spoils a fine car and has put me of replacing the car like for like.

The motor oil they used is Pentosin. They say it's approved by Hyundai.

I didn't go to the dealer today, I refused to go there just to listen the noise. I didn't receive any news from them yet.
Title: Re: Strange Noise
Post by: Pip on April 16, 2010, 14:07:49
The motor oil they used is Pentosin. They say it's approved by Hyundai.

There is of course more than one Pentosin engine oil.  Even without knowing the exact oil used, I could only find marketing fluff along with car manufacturer's specifications met but no other actual specs. Quite a lot can be deduced from the manufacturers numbers associated with the oil but without knowing which oil nothing can be gleaned.

It would still be nice to know which oil was used, particularly if it proves to be the cause of the noise so others can avoid it for that particular engine type.

As far as I know Hyundai does not "approve" any particular oils but instead asks that they meet certain ACEA standards. Which ones, are documented in the handbook.

Even so, if an oil meets the required standard it is no guarantee that it is the equal of another that also meets that same standard. There is no doubt in my mind that some engines prefer one oil over another and will run quieter. Particularly WRT "sewing machine" ticking noises from the valve gear on start-up.

I know some other makes of cars can suffer from noisy tappets when the oil has been left to drain too long at service, and/or wrong viscocity being used, causing the lifters to get air to stick inside. I don't know much about this other than one of my colleagues had the problem on a ford some years ago. Maybe it's a possibility on an i30 too, I don't know.

Manager called me.

They found out a problem with the "tablets" that are responsible for the Tappet regulation. They are ordering the "tablets" and I'll get my car tomorrow because they need to wait for the "tablets" to fix my car and he said that nothing will get worse if I use the car.

I really hope this will fix the problem.

Just an update.

The car still have the problem, I am really pissed off with this situation. I am thinking about selling the car and never buy a car from Hyundai so soon.

I contacted Hyundai and gave them a last chance to fix my car or I'll publish in a newspaper what I am going through and sue them.

A lot of people here in Brazil are unhappy with Hyundai and selling their cars and publishing over the internet all the problems we are having here.

Hyundai needs to wake up, they are not responsible for ours cars here, it's another company and they are doing Hyundai gets a bad reputation over here.

We already are complaining about the high prices of services and pieces to the car, it's not helping Hyundai in Brazil

Hi again Ivarella...

Overall the i30 has terrific Owner satifaction results and a relatively low failure rate .. but I know that doesn't help you.. :'(

That's not happening here in Brazil, everyday when I open the Brazil i30 Forum, someone has a problem and today another got the same problem I have after his first service.

It's becoming frustrating and Hyundai will pay the price for that when the magazines start to publish all these problems. Hyundai in the past abandoned Brazil and let everyone unhappy and now Hyundai is trying to come back, but with all these problems it's not gonna happen the way they would like.

This month, i30 sold 1/3 of what it's sell every month and that's because in every Auto Forum, people are complaining about i30.

I'm really sad, because I had hope in Hyundai to change our market here, but I think I'll come back to VW where I had never had a problem like that, I loved my VW Polo and miss it because it never got a problem in 3 years and i30 with 3 months a have engine problem.

Sure.

- Suspension Problem
- Engine Failure ( Shows that picture in the Panel)
- Engine Noise after 1st service
- Gear Box ( 2 already have to change it)

And there are the problems with the Dealers.

What I know is that they are coming directly from Korea. There is some clue in the car that I can look at?

The dealer called a few minutes ago and said the problem is solved, like I heard many times before. I really hope it's fine now, but I am starting to believe in Santa Claus too.

He said the problem was in the spark plugs, it was causing the noise. Should I believe that? That noise in my video can be caused by Spark Plugs?

Title: Re: Strange Noise
Post by: Pip on July 07, 2010, 14:46:25
You described the noise as "tec-tec-tec" but the video sounded more like a dry bearing noise to me. Tappets sounded like a good bet as they make a ticking noise like a sewing machine. Perhaps it is something like a bearing in the alternator or timing belt tensioner. Either of these may have been loaded by a belt retension during the service. It will be very interesting to get the final diagnosis but I can't link a spark plug to the noise at all.

Perhaps it is something like a bearing in the alternator or timing belt tensioner. Either of these may have been loaded by a belt retension during the service. It will be very interesting to get the final diagnosis but I can't link a spark plug to the noise at all.

I don't believe too and I am preparing myself to get disappointed one more time with Hyundai Dealers.

Well if they say they've "solved" the problem, you'll soon find out :)

Did you get it sorted this time mate? I just read through this thread and it makes me sad and annoyed about what you've had to go through :'( :'(

As expected the noise is still there and nothing has changed.

I gave them a last chance to fix my car, I want someone from Hyundai Korea, an i30 expert , the dealer just know how to change oil and that's it.

If they don't fix my car, I'll go to the newspapers, magazines and publish everything and sue them. I am tired to being treated like trash by them.

Unfortunately that's how things work here.

Hi Ivarella .. that is Crazy (especially if your car comes from Korea like the Aussie ones do ) Failure/problem rate over here very low compared to other brands...

Have they tried changing the oil to a different one at all?

That´s crazy, I love the car, the noise doesn´t seem to be causing trouble to the car for now, that´s my impression, but every time I turn it on, it makes me crazy.
The noise is not normal and for sure it will bring me problem in the near future.

Have they tried changing the oil to a different one at all?

They told me they are using the Oil recommended by Hyundai and that the oil is fine.

What viscosity is the oil they are using?

The noise certainly does sound strange!

Oh God.....another i30 with the same problem. We are thinking to get all together and go complain in Hyundai Building here. That's an absurd.

Hyundai will not be happy if we accomplish this.

One of the cars with the problem tried 3 types of different oils and none of them worked.

Hyundai took a look at our i30 forum here and heard the noise in the video I've posted, after that they called me and said that the noise is really strange and something is not right.  :D

He is scheduling a date next week that a mechanic can go at my home and make the diagnostic before I take the car to the Dealer.

I understand why Ivarella is upset with the i30, but for a car model that exist here for less than 2 yrs, numbers are I bit different than what he wrote. We have a car magazine called 4 RODAS that uses a car for 60k kilometers and than takes it apart. i30 after the 60k was with no problem and they said that it was far the best car they disassemble (ed.612 dec2010).
Even more: on a public query the same magazine brings the i30 as second place with 99,6 in the medium size hatches, loosing the first place for the Focus with 100.7 because of part prices (Focus comes from Argentina, next door and i30 from Korea). The market ranking puts i30 as the 22nd model car sold during last month, more than Civic(28th),  C3, Fit and others. I have a i30 for 1 yr now and never had any problem but as I said I understand that shit happens and I would like to know what happen to his car and if Hyundai solve his problem.

Thanks bad.. it is great to hear some positive feedback from your country

There is no doubt in my mind (and that of most of our members I am sure) that the i30 is a well designed and well made car with far better than average reliability and an excellent warranty. There will always be the odd lemon in every brand unfortunately.
