Title: Turbo Flutter/Dosing noise
Post by: Chelle91 on February 22, 2019, 12:54:53
Hi Guys and Girls!

My i30 PD2 SR auto has suddenly started to make a fluttering noise when there is load on the engine when in 3rd gear through to 4th and 5th keeping the revs just above 2000RPM and slowly increasing to 2500RPM.

It seems to be only occuring after a cold start. Another issue that has been noticed is going from 2nd to 3rd after giving a bit of acceleration the boost kicks and cuts and kicks and cuts and physically can feel the car jerk. Shortly followed by an awful smell in the cabin of the car. Could be coincidental however any advice would be great. Hyundai cannot replicate the fault even after having it over night for a cold test.

Turn up audio to hear flutter

HI Michelle,

Glad you joined. Hopefully someone on here has some further input than what was suggested on FB.

@ Our techie members: Does anyone else think water or other contaminants in the fuel could cause this. Do you think a fuel injector cleaner might help?

Hi Chelle,

Hyundai usually cant replicate a fault. Its either in their DnA or achieved by intense training.

After that smart remark, I cant offer anything, but will give it some thought and come back soon.

Pity about the wipers- bit distracting ,but can get the gist of your problem.

The "an awful smell in the cabin of the car" is curious. Did your co-pilot smell it. Usually a material burning/heating will have its own unique smell.

Dazz "Think water or other contaminants in the fuel could cause this. Do you think a fuel injector cleaner might help?"

No! its too consistent re Revs etc to be something randomly roaming around with the fuel.

My initial thought is a vacuum leak that is causing the turbo actuator to fail.

Shall return.

@Chelle91

Is your transmission DCT?
You mention a bad smell.
Clutches and brakes give off an acrid smell when they are mistreated.
If the transmission or idiot brake is playing up, it could be slowing the car, giving the impression that it is an engine/ turbo fault.

It is a DCT, unfortunately I just got out of a Golf GTI. So, maybe it's curse has carried over lol.

I think I have two faults gentlemen, the gearbox and the actuator maybe?

The VW and Hyundai DCT are from different designers. The Hyundai unit has only had a few early software glitches.

I think you only have one problem. But engine or box, which one?
From experience, whatever the client says, be it accurate or confused, it has relevance. So I am reluctant to ignore the smell.

Watched the latest clip you have sent. Im having to best guess what the driver is up to. But he seems to accelerate up from 17kph ; about mid 70kph, the revs drop and he curses but the car keeps accelerating into the mid 80kph range.
That drop appears to be due to a higher gear change.

Over @tw2005    :phone1: enigma out.
