On the lighter side there was a posting about the ScanGuage II. Details can be found at http://www.scangauge.com
My main reason for purchasing such a device would be the additional fuel economy information, but the other info you can access would keep me occupied for a lifetime.
I've discovered two Oz sellers on eBay who are currently selling this for $190 including postage. It can also be purchased directly from the US and with the current exchange rate, this would probaly be cheaper.
This guage would be an excellent addtion to the SX owners as it gives more info than the trip computer in the SLX and SR models.
I reckon this is worth a look.
Bob
PS Does anyone know if there is an OBDII port inside the cabin of the i30?
-
Hi Bob,
Don't know about that port but it certainly is a nifty little gadget!
-
Hi Bob, thanks for the link, will it work on our cars? also how does it hook up to give the info? thanks.
-
High Lakes and other interested i30 enthusiasts,
From what I understand having downloaded the manual, you simply plug into ODBII port with supplied cable (cable has RJ11 socket - phone socket on the gauge end) and away you go. You have to set units etc. and ou get to choose what info you want displayed. The cable is 1.8m so should each even if you have to find a suitable way through the firewall (through an existing grommet. The i30 is, I assume OBDII compliant. The Hyundau Terrican CRDi is listed, but not the i30 as it is not yet on sale in the US. All US vehicles must comply with the ODBII standard, so I assume the i30 is compliant.
Lakes, I thought you might knowmore about ODBII devices and was hoping you could shed some light. Some of the 4WD forums have heaps of postings on this device.
Bob
-
Hi,
the ODB port (plug) is under the dash, just above your right knee if you're the driver
No need to go through the fire wall
-
Quite tempting to have yet another driving distraction for me
although accessing fault codes might be useful on the odd occasion of course.
£118 from scangauge.co.uk (149EUR). Cheaper on eBay
-
CRM114,
Thanks for that information. Having an OBDII under the dash would make fittting the ScanGuage II a breeze. Fantastic.
Bob
-
I'm pretty sure my OBD port is under the bonnet, near the battery. Will check later
-
Shambles,
I've just jone out in the cold and stuck my head under the dash to check and sure enough, the socket is where CRM114 said it was. Seeems that the i30 may have two such devices, one in the cabin and one under the bonnet. These Koreans think of everything (or was it the German designers - says me proudly with my Germanic heritage).
Now, all you i30 owners who got theirs with the steering wheels on the wrong side, is your OBDII socket above your right knee or your left knee?
And lastly, who is going to fork out the money first to see how good these little guages are so the rest of use can buy with confidence?
Bob
-
Confirmed here too Bob. Two blocks. Above driver's knee (RHD) and another just to the right of the brake fluid reservoir.

Hey Bob electric's or electronics's is not one of my strong points!
but i have friends that work with them, i could get one of these sent out from USA in less than a week if they are in stock, i have good contacts there. problem is they read out MPH & MPG and the US gal is only about 3.8 L as you know, i would rather have one that reads out in same measurements we use here. they have a lot of gadgets like that in USA some are very cheaply made i think they design them and have them made cheaply offshore. but they all seem to be accurate enough. not talking about this product just similar things i have seen over there.
Cheers
-
There is no problem with the units of measurement as these can be changed easily. I downloaded the pdf of the manual and it is all explained in there.
http://www.scangauge.com/support/pdfs/SGMan5_0.pdf
Bob
-
Thanks Bob looks easy enough.
i might get one. can you see what state of USA it is made in?
-
Bob, thanks for the link to the PDF, it's a very good read. More in the scangauge than you would think, especially the bits about sending hex codes to the ECU
Also, in the guide there's a link to a very good "Trouble Codes" website - www.troublecodes.net (http://www.troublecodes.net) - although not really uptodate with later Hy models like ours.
-
Hi All,
I first heard about it from some who were looking for something like a trip computer in cars without any and from some who wanted to be able to capture power and torque output on the road instead of paying to using a Dyno. If I had the spare cash... I would love a ScanGuage .
There are lots of alternatives. Depending what you would like to have and how much you wish to spend. Take a look at the range of options here. http://stores.ebay.com/alpha-bid_W0QQsspagenameZMEQ3aFQ3aSTQQtZkm Simple code readers at the bottom all the way through fancy Laptop displays.
Now do not waste too much time drilling down to things that you will never buy. I have already done enough of that for you all
If you are going to spend the money it looks as if a lot of research will be required to make a good choice.
-
Would have to agree with you bunyip, i have something that tell you a lot of things like this scane gauge but it cost a lot more and hooks up to a Lap Top for as you say fancey read out and can log and play back. but have to fid sensors to different things to get the full range of functions.
how does the scan gauge give you HP & TQ just going through the port. i don't think i can see an air sensor in the i30 CRDi system but i'm sure the petrol model has one, i know the air sensor is not needed to work out HP, with my system it has built in g force thats part of what is used to work out HP but you need to program a lot of information in as i'm sure you would need to with this. the system i have i don't feel like hooking up to the i30 as its not that compact but it gives out a nice graph on my lap top screen of HP and TQ just like you would get with a dyno test and we did some tests with my friends dyno and seem's fairly accurate.
thanks for all your research i think say $200 is not too bad if it works, as i wanted the SLX for the trip PC but as it did not have CC i did not want to pay the $4,000 as not worried about wheels and so on, so i think if i get the scan gizmo and it's works and gives me trip PC info all the additional info there would be a bonus. just were do i fit it?
cheers

Well, I've decided to get myself a Scanguage II and see what it can offer. I hope to have it within a week. I purchased it from an Australian eBay seller for AU$190 (including postage). There are currently two Oz eBay sellers supplying these devices.
I am particularly interested in real-time instant fuel usage, throttle opening, inlet temps, plus a myriad of other information I hope it will give me. I suspect that it will also allow me to change such things as Halo setup, that is if I can get hold of the codes. And you never know when information about error codes might come in handy. The other advantage I that this device can be used in other vehicles as well, such as our Getz Click.
I'll let everyone know my impressions when the device arrives.
Bob
-
Well, I can tell you that the Scanguage very well in the I30... I test drove one recently, and put my Scanguage in, and it worked fine.
Didn't go through alot of the menus, justwonted to see if it worked...
-
Thanks mILO, I can't wait to try mine out next week. Seems as though it has more options to play with than the i30 itself, especially with the XGuage and Adda Guage functions.
Bob
-
Hi All,
I bought a scanguage II from Wooders Garage in Hornsby roughly 3 weeks ago.
It all works well, excepting it seems to be upsetting the Auto gearbox when it changes back down as you are coming to a stop.
I have emailed scanguage in the states and as yet have not even received an acknowledgement of my email, so will probably ring them and see if I can get some answers.,
By the way, the port under the bonnet near the battery is a diagnostics port, not an OBDII port (totally different shape and purpose)
Cheers

Hi Bruce...
Thanks for sharing that info... We need more of our members to contribute like that....
It's usually the same old few (we value everyone's opinion here)

Received the Scanguage II today and plugged it in on the way home. Haven't played with many of the options other than setting the units, engine size, fuel etc. It is easy to use in its standard form.
I offer the following observations:
The speed readout is spot on and agrees with the GPS. it is never more than 1 kph out and only momentarily. It could well be the GPS that is lagging behind (TomTom software).
The fuel consumption has to be out. (It may be more accurate when the fuel corrrection is calibrated when the tank is filled for a second time.)
It fits conveniently on top of the steering column in front of the instrument hub, provided the steering wheel is brought towards the driver a little. This is the preferred position for both my wife and I anyway, so no dramas there.
Of particular interest to me are the MAP readout, the Air Intact Temp, Speed, RPM. While the LPH Km is regestering too high, it is never the less interesting to observe.
I really haven't had time to fiddle as yet. I shall provide a photo of the position I have chosen. I did try putting it on top of the dash (the velcro pads gripped the dash mat fine), but I was not happy with the position and in one case the reflection on the screen.
Sorry to hear about the issue with the auto transmission Bruce. If you don't have any luck and want to sell it, their may be a potention buyer who has a manual who might like the unit you have.
I'll keep you informed as I play with the features a little more.
Bob
-
Sounds good Bob, look forward to the pic's. i was talking to a friend that works in IT, he has one on a Issuzu Holden 3.0 TD 4WD Auto.
Bruce what street in Hornsby is that garadge? i'm not far from Hornsby about 10 min's away, also hope you sort out the auto trans issue. i'll ask my friend if he noticed with his Auto Diesel.
John
-
John,
Wooders Garage are at U1 / 29 Leighton plc Hornsby, their down in the industrial area.
They deal mainly in Jeep gear, but are a distributor for the Scanguage.
The Scanguage makes my auto change back very aggresively, almost feels like 2 gears are engaging at once, rapidly slowing the car, other than that it works great, but I am reluctant to use it obviously too not damage the auto.
I am not really impressed with LinearLogics' (the makers of the guage) slack response, but will keep on their case.
Cheers

Thank's Bruce, sorry to hear it conflicts with the Auto Trans, hope you get support soon. what auto trans does the i30 CRDi use?
and thanks for the address good to know i can drive and buy one. i'll wait to hear how Bob likes his and what it tells him.
thanks again John

Have had the ScanGuage II in the i30 since Monday. I am very impressed with it. Haven't yet calibrated the fuel economy. That will have to wait until the next time I fill up the i30 in about a week.
I have the following guages showing on the display:
LHK (Litres per Hundred Km - Real time)
MAP (Manifold Air Pressure - psi)
KPH (This figure corresponds with the GPS readout)
ºcIA (Intake Air Temperature - ºC)
I have positioned it on top of the steering column in front of the intrument cluster with velcro. The cable is hidden and is tucked away under the dash above the plastic. Looks very neat.
I have yet to fiddle with the advanced features such as Xgauge and add-a-guage.
See later posting by me for images of the guage as fitted to ouri30.

Images of the ScanGuage II
These images show the location I decided to use to fit the guage to ouri30. Guage is secured with two velcro tabs.
This image shows the guage without flash to give you an idea of the display colour I use at night.

Hi Bob,
Looks like a handy gadget.. The placement seems to work well too (Nice.... Any chance of swapping it for a slightly used sports exhaust
-
HI BOB(OURI30), IM THINKING OF PURCHASING A SCANGAUGEII, JUST WONDERING IF IT HAS PERFORMED TO YOUR EXPECTATIONS AND TO THE MANUFACTOURS CLAIMS.
ALSO HAVE YOU SET ANYTHING ELSE ON IT SINCE YOUR LAST POST
CHEERS, TOMMO
-
Tommo,
Yes, it works to my expectations. No, I haven't had time to set any additional guages.
The biggest challenge is to set the fuel consumption % correction. I did as the manual said, but it was still a fair bit out. Over time, future corrections should fix this. I currently have it set at -31.5% and should know by the weekend if I have it right. Once I have set this up, SX owners who install a ScanGuage should be able to use my correction as a starting point. I am trying to match it to the i30 trip computer figures.
What is good, is the DTE figure which is correct after filling up and driving for a bit. However the i30 computer gives better figures closer to empty.
The discrepency between the i30 odometer and the ScanGuage is around .5% based on the figures I got over 1000km. The KPH reading on the ScanGuage is within 1KPH of the GPS I am using and mostly it is spot on.

picked up my ScanGauge11 today

ScanGuage II currently available on eBay (Australia). $180AU + $10 postage
Before I start, I am not connected in any way to the seller (other than as a buyer). I purchased one for ouri30 from this seller (pictures are in this thread) and have now decided to fit one to our Getz. Lakes has also purchased one from this supplier although he went in and got it without using eBay (saved himself the $10 postage).

Hints on setting up a ScanGuage II
For those who have one or are thinking of getting one, there are a few settings needed to get the fuel metering to work correctly, besides the obvious ones like Units, Tank Size and Engine Capacity.
These are:
MORE>SETUP>FUEL>TYPE : DIESELa
MORE>FILLUP : -35% (note minus)
Just a note on the FILLUP
The manual says that on the first FILLUP you should not adjust the %. Since I have done quite a bit of work on what % correction to use to get the LPH as near as possible (for the CRDi 1.6 85KW), I am suggesting you put in the correction I am suggesting from the beginning (at your first FILLUP) and then make your own adjustments after this if necessary. Don't be too hasty in making these adjustments as just a small error in filling up or using a different pump can throw the whole thing out - believe me, I know this from experience.

My ScanGauge11 died on me
just after start up started going like a digital sign board runing displays from one side of the screen to the other. i turned the motor off, it kept this up, so i unplugged it with motor off it went off as needs to be plugged in to get power. later, replugged it in and the light comes on but nothing.
i'll e mail scanGauge see what they say. the guy i bought it off just gets them and sell's so not sure if it's worth going to him with it. i liked having it there to check things, so miss it.
-
I was looking at getting one of these a few months back and found the place in Hornsby that sold them.
Sorry to hear you are having issues Lakes, hopefully you'll get a fast response.
I have a question in regards to the RPM display if anyone has it running. How fast does it update? ie is it a once a second update or faster?
edit: Hey ouri30/Bob, the car dash cover you have, did that come as an accessory from Hyundai?
-
Thanks m8 they are a good gauge.
the RPM just seems same update speed as the stock dial gauge shows only it is digital. you can see what the highest rev your motor did for that day also, so if they drove it when servicing you could see how hard they drive. or check on other drivers of your car. that's if you wanted to.
-
Lakes, sorry to hear your ScanGuage has died.
Bez10y, the dash mat was a hyundai one I got when I purchased the i30. The update of the RPM is not instant but about every 2 seconds. I think it may be possibe to have the guage update more frequently but I haven't tried to figure out how. I just remember reading about it in the manual somewhere but can remember where.
Have noticed another interesting thing about MAP (manifold air pressure) when the aircon cuts in. The turbo boost changes and goes up about 2psi. When the aircon cuts out it reduces the boost by the same amount. Asa result, you don't notice the aircon cutting in ound out like you do on most cars.
Bob
-
Thanks bob, hey you are probably right i never watched the RPM on scanG that much as have the Tach anyway.
Bob do you check the MAP b4 you start the motor? as that is what the motor vacume will be on the day, like here i have seen from 14.3 to 14.8 here at home just on different days, and in Bathurst 13.3 Katoomba 13.2 13.3 Orange 13.5 just elivation or air quality on the day. also i noticed when i set Cruise Control at around 1,900rpm in 5th gear, when it goes up a big hill and holds the same speed i see the MAP go right up to help it maintain the speed. also when that happened i could see the manifold air intake temp go up too.
-
Lakes,
Where we live there is no great changes in altitude as the terrain is very flat. Hence I don't see great variations in the initial MAP reading. There is some variation when there are changes in barometric conditions, but this is minimal. I've seen a low of 14.3psi with the highest 14.8psi.

Bob that's what i ment, when we race and have to tune Carb motor's or mechanical injected motors we refer to Barometric Changes as Elivation or compare to sea level. i've even see air quality at below sea level. then you can add a lot more fuel. make more power. in the old days driving carb cars, when you drove up the mountains the cars eather went better or seemed to have a power loss. was all due to how the were tuned. these days EFI fix's all that.
-
Lakes, any word on getting your Scangauge fixed?
-
No M8, i e-mailed Woodgers, but they never replyed. will have to wait till i get time to go there. and see them , maybe there contact e mail was down. just hard to get there monday to friday.
-
*nods*
I tried calling them a few times over the past couple of weeks to see if they had any in stock but all I got was their answer machine. I think Jambaroo is on so they may be busy.
I ended up ordering one from overseas with a bunch of other stuff through work so hopefully it'll get here some time this week.
-
Received my Scangauge yesterday. Plugged it in and everything working as expected. I still have yet to set up some of the trip features and start the fuel cycle (had only just filled up the car on the weekend) but so far it's looking good.
I have it mounted on the dash to the right hand side. I tried placing it on the steering wheel but I found it covered too much of the instrument cluster for my liking.
I have to buy my wife a camera for chrissy because our previous one decided to go bye-byes so I think I'll get one early and then I'll take some shots of the car and put them up.
-
I find the -35% suggested by Bob just about spot on :)
I am getting 50 ~ 55 mpg knocking around the doors (in the UK), I am very light footed
Only 2000 miles on the clock so might get a little better.
Great tip, thanks Bob.

i was thinking about getting one but will it still up set my auto this post is late last year
-
I just ordered one directly from scan gauge - US$169.00 with free delivery via DHL. Now lets see how long it takes to get here.
-
it should come quicker than what it took for our cars to arrive. excellent little toy the scangauge II.
-
Ive almost worked out all the functions, nearly all.
-
Very interesting device.
Anyone found out how to toggle HALO operation? Just curious..
-
i dont think a scangauge will change halo settings,on or off.
-
I received a bit of a shock with my scangauge - ordered it from the US and it was delivered to my door after four days. Add on the 10 minutes to get it plugged in, mounted on the steering column and the basic gauges setup..........
-
I am looking at buying one for an i30w Diesel automatic.
Does anyone know if there are still issues with the automatic transmission and having ScanGaugeII connected while driving?
-
It's still listed as not compatible with the Diesel Auto:
http://www.scangauge.com.au/support/CompatibleVehicles.shtml
...but that could be out of date, as v3.17 firmware has been released since.
Hopefully someone here will know but otherwise you could drop them an email and ask:

-
I'll be picking up a new i30cw auto (SX model with no trip computer) later this week and will purchase a ScanGaugeII for it. Will report back to the forum to tell you how it goes.
-
I have had my Scangauge fitted in my diesel SLX for almost 2 weeks now and (thanks to others' contributions here) have it set up pretty well. It provides PLENTY of information to me. What a great gizmo!
I get these readings on the gauge menu and I haven't been able to locate in the operation manual what they are measurements of:-
*TFC with readings fluctuating around 4.25 and
*CPK with readings fluctuating around .060.
These readings were registering at around 110kph
Can anyone shed some light on these mystery readings for me?
Cheers,
Paolo5
-
CPK could be "cost per kilometre" and TFC could be "total fuel cost"?
-
Hi Shambles,
Thanks for your reply.
Both of these readings make sense, especially looking at the corresponding readings that I took.
Cheers,
Paolo5
-
CPK is definitely Cost per km.
As for TFC I don't believe I have that on mine ????
Regards
Daniel

I have taken delivery of the car, i30cw Diesel Auto, and have connected a Scangauge II to it (I have the SLX model - no trip computer).
The Scangauge II gives erratic readings:
LHK (litres per 100 km) - this should be the current fuel economy (i.e. average of last few seconds) - it alternates between 0 and what appears to be a correct reading. It sits on 0 for about 5-15 seconds and then about 5 seconds on a proper reading. Naturally this seriously impacts the AVG (average fuel economy - l/100km)
This is also occurring for:
LOD - engine Load & LPH - litres per hour.
All other gauge measurements, such as RPM, KPH CWT and MAP all show what appears to be correct measurements continuously
These other measurements DO NOT go to zero for a period before returning to a proper value the way it does for LOD, LPH and LHK).
- I have tried 2 different fuel options "Diesel A" and "Diesel B"
- I have tried different "CUTOFF" values and decided to set it to ZERO -> the TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) appears to be accurate, and gives a continuous correct value.
- I have tried to force it to different modes and it doesn't work at all
- I have tried setting "RATE" (i.e. sampling rate) to "SLOW" then "FAST" and "NORMAL"
I haven't adjusted the percentage parameter when using the "FILLUP" function, as I have only filled up the tank once. Should I go straight to -35% (as suggested by "ouri30" at: https://i30ownersclub.com/forum/index.php/topic,537.30.html (https://i30ownersclub.com/forum/index.php/topic,537.30.html) on August 15, 2008).
I have also experienced the thud when the auto was downshifting as reported by user "Bluei30Crdi" regarding his experience with the ScanGaugeII (July 21, 2008)
see:
https://i30ownersclub.com/forum/index.php/topic,537.0.html (https://i30ownersclub.com/forum/index.php/topic,537.0.html)
I am using what I assume to be the latest firmware version of ScanGauge II, version 3.17 as at July 9, 2010.

Hi inmn,
Congratulations on your new car!
I don't know if you have seen this re automatic i30 diesels:-
http://www.scangauge.com.au/support/CompatibleVehicles.shtml
and I don't know if there are incompatibility problems with the auto and the Scangauge 11 above and beyond the abrupt gear changes. Maybe the Australian distributor or Scangauge itself could clear this matter up for you.
I bought a new Scangauge 11 on 25-6-10 and fitted it to my manual diesel.
The Scangauge II gives erratic readings:
LHK (litres per 100 km) - this should be the current fuel economy (i.e. average of last few seconds) - it alternates between 0 and what appears to be a correct reading. I don't have this problem with mine.

I have mine set to "Diesel A"
* I have tried setting "RATE" (i.e. sampling rate) to "SLOW" then "FAST" and "NORMAL"
I have mine set to "FAST".
I am using what I assume to be the latest firmware version of ScanGauge II, version 3.17
Mine is the latest too.
Why don't you fillup and set the SG 11 to -35% at that point and see if things settle?
(I don't know what fuel tank capacity Ouri30 used when setting up his SG. Rumour has it that an i30tank will hold 62 litres filled to the brim, which is where I fill mine.) I set mine to 62 litres. I will find out at my next fillup how accurate the -35% is with 62 litres set as the tank's capacity with my SC11.
All the best in getting to the bottom of this. I am really happy with my SC11
Cheers,

I spoke to the Australian distributor and he specifically told me about the issue with the automatic transmission. I had hoped that because it was an earlier version of ScanGauge from nearly 2 years ago and that the i30 auto-diesel available in Australia might have had subtle updates that this issue would not re-occur. There was a promise of the 30-day money back guarantee which I will take up unless I can quickly find a solution.
I love the idea of the ScanGauge II device and want to see it working properly. I will try the -35% thing on the next fill up and see how it goes.
thanks for the reply.

I emailed the company I purchased if from and they in-turn emailed the manufacturers in the US.
They suggested doing a reset, and changing the "FUEL TYPE" to "GAS"
seems very counter-intuitive, but I tried it and it appears to work. I had to set "CUTOFF" to zero as the LPH (litres per hour) and LHK (litres per 100km) where higher when I took my foot off the accelerator. Once I did that it gives continuous readings, that appear to correctly correspond to current fuel use (LPH and LHK). I also set "RATE" to "FAST"
I only took it on a 20km drive (in the country) gently rolling hills, I didn't get any thuds from the auto-transmission. There was hardly any flat section of road.
I won't have the car for a couple of days now, so I won't be able to do more testing. I would be more happy if I get to try it out over a range of different measurements (in the GAUGE function), for a longer drive, especially on some flat roads.
Also the LOD reading is still erratic, going from zero to a value around 70-80, but this is insignificant if all else is working. I also tried to set "FUEL" to "DIESEL A" and it operated as it did previously, with periods of Zero readings, changing "FUEL" back to "GAS" again fixed this.
all in all it appears to be pretty good, I just need to get it fully accurate and this will only happen after a few fill-ups.
It seems pretty counter-intuitive to set it to "gas", but it works much better. I am interested to know why selecting this as the fuel makes it work.

Hi inmn,
I too wonder why the new "gas" setting seems to have corrected things. For that matter, I wonder what the settings, Diesel a, Diesel b, Hybrid etc. actually do to the calibration of the SC and how they were ascertained in the software development process.
It is great that the auto-transmission "thud" also seems to have vanished. Did the Scangauge people say that this problem has been rectified for your application with the 3.17 software? If not, this thudding would be a dealbreaker for me with an auto i-30.
Good luck. Keep us informed....
On another SC note, I have lately setup a few new gauges (using the Xgauge facility) that I can monitor whilst driving.
*Litres used per day
*KM travelled per day
*Litres left in tank
*Time travelled on tank
I have said it before...what a great gizmo!

I had a longer drive later on (70km), which included some flat country roads. This time I noticed the issue of incorrect readings when taking my foot off the accelerator at over about 50 km/h. Under 50km/h LPH and LHK (litres per hour and litres per 100km) both go down when you take your foot off the pedal, but over about 50, it increases, showing for example higher fuel consumption rate when going down a hill than when traveling at steady speed on a flat section. Does anyone know how the "CUTOFF" function works? I have it at zero after changing it from the default (neither worked) should I try a much higher value. I tested the various other gauges, and only "LOD" engine load still gives erratic readings, but as I mentioned before, that doesn't concern me, all other gauges appear to be working correctly (except for the coasting issue for LPH and LPK). TPS (throttle position) appears to be very accurate, I think it is used for the "CUTOFF" function.
The "thud" in the transmission has not come back at all, which is very good news, but you never know, the situation could be different in suburban / peak hour stop-start driving. I live in the country so do hardly any suburban / peak-hour driving, except when I drive to Melbourne a couple of times a month.
Paolo5, I would be interested in the other gauges you have set up using the Xgauge facility, let us know what codes you need to set them up, and if anyone can tell me what the various "FUEL" settings actually do I would be very interested in an explanation.

Hi inmn,
If you refer to the small blue book that should have come with your SC entitled "Installation and Operation", the relevant section on the setting up of other gauges is outlined on pages 28 and 29. It will all make sense to you after you read it a few times.
Each gauge takes a minute or so to program once you figure out what you want to show up and what you will call it (so that you will recognise the 3-figure name once you are back in the GAUGE section).
For example, if you want to have a gauge that registers the Time travel Total on a Tank you need to need get into the XGauge section and allocate this new gauge a number between 1 and 24. Then press EDIT.
Then enter-
*54_ "and "OK" on the TXD screen (5 is for time and 4 is for Tank Trip)
*800000000000" and "OK" on the RXF screen (8 tells the SC that this is a Trip Gauge)
*and then give it a name eg. TTT
*hit the "SAVE" button.
Then (using the above example) when you are in the gauge section and you scroll down to TTT you will have a register of the Total Time that you have travelled on the current Tank.
It really is that simple.
All the best,
Paolo5
P.S. In my appplication, I didn't alter the Cutoff setting from the default.

Shamlessly stolen:
"The CUTOFF was a last minute addition to the ScanGaugeII. Some vehicles will report when they shut off fuel flow during coasting with the engine in gear. The same signal also indicates when the vehicle is enriching the fuel mixture during hard acceleration. If the throttle position is below the CUTOFF value when this signal is received, the ScanGaugeII assumes it means 0 fuel flow. Above this it means enriched flow. Normally you should not have to change this. If your TPS is above this level when you are coasting with your foot off the accelerator, you would need to raise it. If you set it to 0, this detection is turned off."
It is described in the latest version of the handbook too IIRC.

Hi Inim,
I have also mailed the manufacturer about the problem. Basically the "GAS" or "DieselA" or "DieselB" change the way the scangauge reads the fuel consumption. When it's set to "Diesel A", it uses the "LOD" data which is wrong when the A/C is off. Switching to GAS would most likely use another set of data which won't be as accurate as LOD if load was working right but should be better then nothing.
With respect to the clunk in the transmission, I am glad to hear that it's not happening... and here is why. The port that the scangauge plus into is basically the vehicle network. In the i30, all of the car components talk to each other over this vehicle network. This includes, the engine, the transmission, the instrumentation, alarm, ignition, traction control, ESP, air bags etc etc. If your getting clunks in your transmission, it would indicate to me that the scangauge is interfering with this vehicle network. This would be BAD in my book especially when you consider what else could be getting stuffed around that you don't know about!

Wouldn't that be the same for all modern cars?
I thought that the idea of the scangauge was that it is just a passive device that reads the signals. Obviously OBDII interface implementations differ slightly between car-makers and Scangauge has to try and cater for a wider coverage as possible. Perhaps there are other pins on the interface that do have an effect on various systems that are connected electronically. I don't know how many of the pins are actually used, but the socket does have quite a few.

The scangauge is not passive as it actually talks on the network. It sends a query to the ECU to get the information it needs. I am not saying that the scangauge will disrupt the network, it most cars it seems to get a long just fine with everything else. I am saying that if I had a car that the auto started going weird (limp home mode??) when the scangauge is plugged in, I would be worried. To me, it would indicate that the scangauge is disrupting the network somehow and this could be dangerous.

Just a quick note, the load should drop to zero when ever you are coasting in gear and the engine is not at idle. This is because there is zero fuel flow so the LOD shows 0. When switching to "GAS" this doesn't happen which is wrong.
For fun, listen to your engine when you coast down a hill in gear, the familiar "diesel rattle" will stop as there is no fuel being combusted. Touching the throttle will start it up again instantly.

Can anyone with a Scangauge that is working confirm this: Does it show 0 for LHK (Litres per 100km) or 9999 MPG (or LPH or GPH at zero) when coasting in gear and engine is not at idle?

It does on mine. 9999MPG, its what I hope to see as much as possible. It works exactly as you'd expect it to. As soon as I accelrate it changes, and as soon as the engine hits idle (or close to it) it changes too. On engine-deceleration I always get 9999MPG.
Keep in mind I have a U2 engine which probably has later engine management code though, might not be relevant.

I double checked my setting when I went out tonight. My engine type is set to "Diesela".
My cutoff is set to 24 which IIRC is the default, and works OK.
My scanguage firmware is 3.17

Thanks Lorian for letting me know that on coasting that no fuel is being consumed (unless at idle revs)
The specs for the 1.6 litre common rail turbo diesel for the Australian market is:
85 kW @ 4000 rpm 255 Nm @ 1900 – 2750 rpm
which I assume is the "U2" version of the engine. The build date of my car is mid-May 2010.
I would guess the issue is the automatic transmission, looking back on what Marvy said, I could speculate that there is a lot of communication, i.e. signals to control the automatic transmission that ultimately interferes with ScanGauge II's operation in reporting instantaneous fuel consumption (i.e. LPH, GPH, LHK and MPG). Looks like most posters to the i30ownersclub forum are enthusiasts who don't mind changing their own gears because of the obvious benefits, it would probably have been worth it to pay for my wife to have a few lessons driving a manual car, the savings in term of up front costs and on-going fuel savings would have been worthwhile.
I have given up using "GAS" as the fuel, I tried the others as well (LPG an HYBRID), I was annoyed by the higher fuel consumption on coasting, and have reverted back to "Diesel A", even though you have periods of zero readings. When it is non-zero, it appears more accurate than the readings of the "GAS" mode. I do hope ScanGauge comes up with a fix in the next version.
Also as a reference, what LPH or GPH do you get at idle, i.e. for a fully warmed up engine, no headlights, no a/c, just a minimum of accessories running?
-
I just checked my CUTOFF setting and it is set to 10.

Its not somthing I focus on, so will have to check that for you later.
I think all i30's todate with the automatic gearbox are U rather than U2 spec engines. This might have changed recently, but I doubt it.

According to other discussions on the wen It should be set to at least the the value of the throttle position sensor, when you are not pressing the pedal, plus 4. But like I said It works fine on mine set to 24.
