Title: Shark fin antenna
Post by: kman on March 26, 2010, 01:43:08
Has anyone tried replacing the factory antenna with one of these?  I need to fit a ski box on the roof rack, but the antenna gets in the way.  I just wonder if these smaller units get decent reception.  In theory, if the length of the coil is similar, reception should be similar, but I don't know how well these are made.

I hate those things, but not sure if anyone here has fitted one...

If they're small I don't mind them, but a lot of the after-market units are huge and ugly.  I just don't want to break the factory antenna with my ski box, so I either need to push the box farther forward or find a smaller antenna.  It's getting close to the end of ski season, though -- maybe I'll just put it off for a few months.

I know in Aus their aerials fold flat. Mine doesn't and I guess your Norwegian one doesn't either

Fold flat?  That would be perfect!!  Wonder why they don't do that across the board.

I noticed when at the dealers last time the i30's on display had the ariel that folds flat.

depending on how old the I30 is, it may hav a fold flat aerial. Mine was 2008 model, and didn't.
If it is a short stubby arial it should fold, if its a long one, like a dodgem/bumper car it won't. :D

Yep. The Australian ones fold forward and if you have bars or racks you just bend it a litle to go under the rack and it sits horizontal, pointing forward.
Or (at least here) you can unscrew it and I've found there's enough of the base visible to pick up the signal unless you are way out of range.

actually fitted one of these a while ago, the reception was rather rubbish off it, so never connected it, just going to place the original ariel inside the car sumwer.
