Title: How much do you pay for your service?
Post by: Pikapolonica on April 30, 2010, 05:04:09
I just had my car booked in for the 45,000km service and cost me $295 at Werribee Hyundai.  Prior to that I had my car services at a VACC approved mechanic, thinking it might be slightly cheaper, but was the same price and prior to that I had the car serviced at Blood Hyundai in Geelong for $265 (at the appropriate intervals).

Apparently diesels cost more to service.  I note the oil alone is $100

You can buy perfectly good Castol Edge Sport 5w 30 for about $35 on special (and ask them to use that) they will probably jack something else up a bit but you will still be ahead..

About $260 to $300 is about right for most dealer services on the diesel...My 60,000 cost cost me $295 including Oil, Oil Filter, Air Filter, Fuel filter and a bit of labour to swap my Exhaust back to the original one...

My local K-Mart must be discontinuing Castrol Edge and they have a clearance sign with $25 for 5 litres. How many litres does the diesel hold?

Need to be a bit careful as there are other cheaper viscosities of Castrol Edge (we need the 5W 30 for the Diesel)

I got a 5ltr and a 1ltr for my first oil change but they didn't touch the 1ltr so I just give them the 5 ltr now (and still have the 1 ltr or at least half of it in the boot for top ups - not that I need them)

Well I just paid $622 (AU$) for the 30,000 (CRDi) service which looking on here means I was shafted and the annoying thing was they didn’t prewarn me of the high cost nor the 3 hours it took to complete.. normally I wait for the service (around 1-1.5 hours)..  Large customer service fail, they also left dirty oil marks all over my car and forgot to put the "next service due sticker" on the window, perhaps they don’t want me back LOL..  Further insult to injury was the comment that was made that they had to have engineers work through their lunch break to finish my car... Was I supposed to feel guilty? I mean what gives, They knew it was a "while you wait service" when I booked (and the service mileage) and when I dropped it in: all they needed to do was to tell me to come in earlier (or later) when I made the booking..

Comment also made to "prepare" myself for the 45000 $ wise... I think I may need to change service centres!

yes,at 90.000kms a timing belt is up for a change, from memory its around $400,i don't think that's a n excessive price as i changed a timing belt on my sisters KIA Rio not to long ago and it took me all day and the parts cost me $150 alone.so 8 hours labor and a belt i think a dealers timing belt cost is pretty good. IMO.

Yes only required for the petrol (helps offset the extra cost for diesel fuel filters etc)

yer i was going to say... diesel and timing belt dont really mix... i can only think of one at the moment, nissan RD series had timing belts IIRC

Yeah I have the same prob.  I think it depends on where the pics are being hosted and if the host or the files are still with valid links.
Some websites will cease hosting files if you're bandwidth exceeds limits and/or you do not continue to log on to their website or use their facilities.

meh your better off doing your services yourself anyway... that way YOU can pick up on things that are wearing prematurely and catch them before any damage is done... will a mechanic tell you if your belts are looking dodgy??? probably not... and by doing it yourself you can make sure that its done properly

I just paid £146.00 (UK) for my 12 month service.  Hyundai main dealer in Southend.

I asked for a quote on a five year service plan (i.e. five services) for a 1.4 petrol i30 and was quoted £1,085.43, so it averages out at about £200 a time.

I was talking to a mechanic today about the fixed price servicing on my Toyota Hybrid (A$130 for each of the first 4) and he was saying Subaru first service acan be over A$1000  I did some searching on the net and there are some scary stories about .. see here..

When the car was MOT'd today at an indeprndent I asked for a price for the 3 year service and they quoted £15 less than the dealer.

Unclear as to the oil speci, mine need C3, as the priced seemed low. So if the wrong oil quoted then price about same as dealer.

Also, the dealer provides a courtesy car free of charge, just pay for fuel, the independent doesn't.  So that worth at least £15 - £20 for 1 day hire.

I didn't realize it at first.
Nevertheless, i don't think that they'll admit this as a fault. Viscosity (10w-40) seems the right choice for hot weather and noone(*) constrains them from using part-synthetic or crappy oils (well, i should but i didn't bother...) :'(

(*) or i think so...

A few bucks at most!!!

Keystar: $312 with oil, ~$200 without
Zupps: $330 with oil, ~$270 without

That IS a good price.
Mine's due in about 1500klms. I might manage to hold off till we get back from overseas though as I doubt I'll cover that in the next 6 weeks.
I'm going to take it to the dealer I bought it from (Sunco Hyundai) and we'll see how it goes.

just had my 15000km

AU$133 inc parts and labour
did buy my own oil though

nb: they didn't perform the wheel rotation so not sure if that affected the price

That's a very good price, I'm impressed! I rang 3 different dealers for a quote on the 15000km service.

Keystar: $312 with oil, ~$200 without
Zupps: $330 with oil, ~$270 without
Marooka: $297 with oil, $193 without

:( :(

i was quoted $216 with the oil - so it dropped $83 for not having that.
i see in your quotes yours drops more without the oil - interesting.
i'm in central queensland, maybe they just don't put as high a premium on each component up here as they do in the city? (which i'm surprised on really)

Is the wheel rotation necessary on 15.000 service?

Is the wheel rotation necessary on 15.000 service?
babis, to be perfectly honest, tyre rotation should not be an automatic occurrence.
Although on FWD cars, the wear on the front can be three times what it is on the back, rotation can mask suspension problems and remove a useful diagnostic tool for mechanics later on.

Rotation became popular as a way of ensuring all four tyres wore out at about the same time (on RWD cars where you would get only slightly different wear patterns front and rear).

However on FWD cars, you can get heavy wear at the front, accentuated by heavy shoulder wear on the LHF due to roundabouts etc. (maybe it happens on the right hand tyre in Europe - I guess you go round roundabouts in an anticlockwise direction so the wear would be on the outside of the RHF tyre).

In addition, there is more opportunity for the rear to get out of alignment, thus causing abnormal wear.
If you rotate the tyres, and somewhere down the track you have someone trying to diagnose a problem, they've got to guess what wear on what tyre is caused by what problem.

Confused??? Sorry. :-[

However, having said all that, rotation if done, is best carried out at intervals of no more than 10,000klm. It should be done by someone who can tell at a glance from the tyres as they come off, if there are any alignment, balance or pressure issues.

To the right person, looking at a tyre is just like reading a book. It tells a clear story of what's going on with the suspension of the car, what the driver is like and the type of roads they travel.

Each driver needs to decide wheher they want to be replacing two tyres at a time or all four. If two, don't rotate. There are benefits and shorcomings to both options which i won't go into in this post but can expand on it if anyone wants me to.

That was very explanatory indeed.

...rotation can mask suspension problems and remove a useful diagnostic tool for mechanics later on.

...looking at a tyre is just like reading a book.

...and that's something i never thought of, so i shall leave my book open, risking of changing tyres sooner. After all, it's an opportunity to get rid of Hankooks

Thanks!

Nice explanation Trev.. I have been lucky most of the time being able to time my rotations to have all four tyres wearing out at the same time (on the few cars I have kept long enough...)

i had my rotation done around 12000k.
at my 7500 service (actually done closer to 10000) i mentioned a 'wiggle' at high speed but they didn't find anything and i decided to have the rotation done as a prelude to an alignment check. just haven't done the alignment check yet. apparently the rotation showed the tyres were wearing evenly though.

yeah ok that is worse than Honda, but Honda is still worse than Hyundai, and by more if you only intend on doing 15,000km/1 year services..

From drive review..

"Honda dealership servicing is a killer. To be avoided at all costs. While I would buy another new Honda, the dealership servicing costs would put me off. It is how they recoup their money. "

The other interesting thing for me will be when I get the i30 and drive to Sydney next, as with two adults, luggage and one child I can't beat around 10l/100km on the hume in the 07 Civic even without aircon (cruise control set at 110km and I rarely stop)... I keep telling the service center but they are not interested  :-[, so the diesel i30 will be a good test for me..

Yes and no, in the grand scheme of things (compared to other Japanese cars) the Civic was actually a decently priced car, but yeah not Hyundai value level..

I got a bad taste from Honda based on all the fit/finish problems I had with my Thai manufactured Civic. Bubbled paint on the roof, vents falling out, electric windows sticking.. It was all fixed of course and they gave me loan cars each time, but it ruins the fun and with service costs and the poor economy I get on long trips that we do, I have just had enough of Honda.

I don't know about OZ, but here it's a traddition to take it back where we got it.
First 1.000 km checkup is not officially indispensable. That said, another dealer theoretically, would deny the free check-up.
In reality though, no-one denies a potential customer. Don't forget that they live from services, not from selling cars.

It's a shame for you guys Hyundai haven't YET gone down the fixed price servicing (like Toyota and Mitsubishi)

I had my 9 month/15,000 service on the Hybrid done the other day (at 11,000 kms) for A$130..including all consumables..I get 3 more at 9 month intervals before my warranty runs out (only 3 years  :'()

The invoice showed Oils (durablend?) at A$36.50 + 10% GST, parts A$19.75 + 10% GST (mainly the filter) and Labour of A$132.80 + GST then discounted by around A$70.90 + GST to bring it back to A$130..

They have a really flash waiting lounge with a good size LCD TV comfy leather chairs .. help yourself free coffee machine and a friendly Service Manager..Impressed so far..

Included a wheel rotation and front wheel balance too..

15,000k service on a CRDI

Oil (Fuchs 5l) $60
Service (including filter) $90

For a total of $150 which is exactly $150 less than what the dealer wanted to charge.

Had the wheels rotated too, which the dealer wanted to charge more for.....

Gee you guys must have a more pleasant tone or  be better looking than me, cause I'm getting my 15 k service done and its costing $350ish plus extra for a wheel balance and front end alignment( went to Qld  the road works went for miles, were really rough and full of deep potholes) so I reckon it will be $400-450, not the $250 to $300 you guys and gals are getting.
Maybe it is because things are dearer in SA( where most of the Hyundai dealers are owned by the same Company).Oh well, nothing else for it, but to take in the i30, bend over the desk and take it like a man.

Stuff that,

Take it to a mechanic and have the scheduled service done....I saved $150 that way, you'll more likley save more.

While were on dealer rip offs, on of the girls at work took her car in for a 10 k service (not Hyundai). Gets a call from the workshop telling her that she should have the wheels rotated and balanced for just $32 more.

She was busy and said yeah whatever. Was talking to her over lunch. I said, wheel rotation is fine, but they need to remove the wheels to check the brakes so you shouldn't pay more for the mechanics to move wheels between hubs, and if there wasn't a thumping from the wheels there really isn't a need to balance the wheels either and as a guide I've done nearly 20k on mine and I have no intention on balancing them unless a problem develops.

She rang up and it backfired on them badly, not only did they comp the service, but they gave her a discount to boot. I guess they get away with it 95% of the time, so there is no need to argue when they get caught out.

If you have a good independent service centre or garage nearby get a quote from them (it won't effect your warranty but make sure they stamp and date the service book..Try and find out what they reckon you need it parts for that price. My guess is it includes, Oil, Air & Fuel filters but not a pollen filter which should be o/k.

I left our Fuel filter until 60,000kms and supplied my own Kia one which was about $30 cheaper than the same Hyundai part number ($100 V $130 i think) it is on here somewhere.. The air Filter is about $10 cheaper through our local Kia dealer for the same part too .. If you have the time and inclination you can supply your own oil too (starting with something like Castol Edge Sport 5W30 for around $50...)

Doing this and using an independent could save you a couple of hundred $$$ easily (But still get a quote first)

Good luck... :D

our hatch and cw are both 2.0 petrol, the hatch is manual and the cw is an automatic.  we were quoted three days ago $380 for our 30.000km service on each car.  we had a pollen filter changed on each car at 22.500kms and it cost $50.00 for each car.  my wife has had a couple of stop light globes changed and it only cost $3.00 each.  :goodjob:  you have been seen coming in a big way.  :disapp:   i use Dandenong Hyundai for my services on the cars for two reasons, its were we bought them and they don't rip you off or muck you around.  the guys at the counter actually know what your talking about and listen to your observations of the vehicle. the wife and myself have had on a few occasions one of the mechanics come out for a drive with us to find/hear a problem the wife's cw had. it turned out to be the exhaust and was fixed there and then. they have a scheduled service cost board on the wall that tells you the price for each service and in columns for, auto ,manual, diesel and petrol.  :goodjob: what you see is what you pay.

it was nunawading hyundai. I went changed the bulb myself today, and vacuumed the pollen filter (it will need replacing anyway)
time to remove filter :5mins + 2mins vacuuming
time to change both stop lights:7min + $3.85

My price per hour now, based on their quote for $270 for these two items is: $1115
I figure they should be able to do it faster than me though, so it's probably higher. Looks time for me to change business'!

I was charged half that so I guess it depends where you go.

Incidently, your dealer was one of the dearest when I did my ring around. I haven't got the figures any more but until I did my telephone research, that's where I was going to have it done as they are closest to me and I also used them for the (quite satisfactory) first service.

thanks for the heads up pip.  :goodjob: the price i was quoted for our petrol i30's was very reasonable compared to others. i really didn't think the diesel was so up and down in service price, but i don't own one so i have a good excuse for my ignorance.  :-[ :-\ :scared:

just had my 15000km

AU$133 inc parts and labour
did buy my own oil though

just had my 22000 k service.

bought own oil and service cost about $120 something inc filter change.

and my 30000k (using own oil again) was $296 ish.

quite a jump from my previous ones and using the same dealer. seems to be on the high side really looking at what others pay.
also they only dropped $54 for the oil wheras in the past they dropped it by approx $80.

Some official Hyundai service prices seem rather excessive. Would any of our members care to take a bad example and try to justify their price.

Given that dealers have access to OEM parts and bulk oil purchases are the rest of the costs absorbed by labour charges and a little profit, or are we being regularly fleeced.  :whistler:

The problem is that like in a lot of retail, sales margins in the car industry have been eroded by competition and the GFC and so dealers look to their other departments to prop things up...

Apart from the fixed price deals offered by some, most brands dealers tend to charge a premium when they can..

I know Peugeot can be really expensive and I've heard horror stories about Subaru Servicing and I'm sure Honda and Mazda wouldn't be cheap (particularly after the warranty expires)

However, the landscape is changing.
Many dealers now offer "fixed price servicing" which, from the figures I've seen is extremely reasonable.

anything is possible i guess. they moved the saleyard proper to a different location altogether but have the services down at nissan still. so maybe something else changed to.
