Title: Airbag light stays on
Post by: pidim on February 03, 2020, 08:14:07
Hi forum,

I notice today that my airbag light stays on. When I start the car all the lights go on as usual and they all turn off a after a second or two but then the airbag light comes back on and stays lit.

I tried disconnecting negative terminal on battery for 15mins as a first try but no change.

Is there anything else I can do myself as first step? Has this happened to anyone’s GD here and would this be a major issue?

If there’s nothing simple, would this be a Hyundai dealer thing or could I take it to my independent guy?

Thanks again.

You're going to need a scan tool that can read the SRS codes, most basic ones can not and then once you have the codes commence fault finding from there, could be any part of the system

Would I need to go to a Hyundai dealer or could my mechanic do it instead?

You would expect a decent workshop would have a scantool to access multiple manufacturers and systems. Find your favourite and ask the question prior to booking it in or find something online that could do it but probably just as cheap to get someone to scan in fact Supercheap offers this service if you just want to get a read.

I would say level 2  @ $28 but again ask the question before commiting.

Thanks for the info.

Looking at the manual, it shows fuse #24 is a 15A specifically for the SRS control module. Do you think this could be a starting point?

Maybe, I don't have my manuals with me, I'd be more inclined to thing the fuse is fine since the system is generating a code.

When I got an airbag light issue on my 2014 GD I discovered the cable underneath the drivers seat was wobbly, possibly due to my constant readjusting of the seat on its rails. Part of the harness underneath the seat connects to the seatbelt switch which is an important feature of the airbag system, allegedly.

Had car scanned today while I waited. Mechanic showed me the screen showing high electrical resistance from steering wheel and felt it would probably be clock spring with that reading.

Sounds expensive. ☹️

Nice, and good choice of action. No they are quite cheap maybe $70 genuine online, airbag and wheel will need to come off. Not a big job but clockspring needs to be centred correctly as there is a limited number sof turns it can handle internally before it binds up and snaps. Basically a long flexible tape conductor wound around a post.

There's a couple of types depending on whether you have cruise and vol controls.

Just realising this is GD, may only have one type fitted but design and principle will be the same

As shambles says first check the connectors below the seats are home first, they can also cause high resistance faults to be triggered, and they are free to check.....

Just finishing off that the job was done yesterday and issue rectified.  The invoice split showed the part as $150 and the rest was labour.  They gave me the old part in a plastic bag FWIW lol.

Thanks all for your help and was very useful to get all your background intel, as always.

Not sure actually, as I didn't end up taking it with me but looked identical to the image.
